Minister hints at BMC slashing Rs 15,000 per-pothole penalty to Rs 2,000
'I will meet the BMC commissioner to bring down the penalty to Rs 2,000," Lodha stated.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, through a July 21 circular, hiked the fine for digging roads to set up pandals to Rs 15,000 per pothole.
Several Ganesh mandals protested the steep increase in the penalty.

Decks have been cleared for the publication of WBJEE results following the Supreme Court's July 28 order staying the Calcutta High Court's earlier decision to halt the implementation of a revised list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) notified by the state government, a senior higher education department official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI said on Wednesday. Once the results are announced, the candidates will be able to access them using their application number and date of birth/password to log in. The results will be made available on the official website – Furthermore, candidates should note that the final WBJEE 2025 answer key will be released before the final results announcement. WEBJEE Results 2025: Official's Comments When asked about the timeline for releasing WBJEE results, board chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee was cautious yet hopeful. In a conversation with PTI, she further stated, 'Today (July 30), we received the state government directive. We shall implement the directive and let you know about our decision tomorrow (July 31),' The education minister of the state, Bratya Basu, stated that the department was fully prepared to respond promptly to the Supreme Court's decision and said, 'We in the higher education department had already anticipated this and are fully prepared to take appropriate actions immediately.' WEBJEE Results 2025: Important Details The WBJEE exams were held on April 27, and according to the reports, the results were expected to be out in July. However, with the Calcutta HC ruling halting the process, the results were severely delayed. According to PTI, a senior education official said that steps have been taken to publish the results soon and further added, 'We have consulted legal experts, and every step has been taken to accommodate candidates' interests. The results will be out soon.' Previously, the Board Chairperson had sai,d 'We were ready to publish the results by July 5. But then, the legal developments followed, and the matter became subjudice. We were waiting for the government's directive.' Centre developing legislative framework for blue economy: Govt in Lok Sabha
The central government is taking a systematic approach towards a legislative framework for implementation of the Blue Economy policy, the ministry of earth sciences informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The draft national policy on blue economy was placed in the public domain in February 2021. (PTI photo) The draft national policy on blue economy, covering seven thematic areas including ocean governance and marine spatial planning, was placed in the public domain in February 2021 and revised in July 2022 after inter-ministerial and stakeholder consultations, the response said adding that the policy is aiming to harness ocean resources sustainably for economic growth while protecting marine ecosystems ensuring national security and it also provides the foundational basis for future legislation, the response said. The deep ocean mission is a subset of the broader blue economy concept which is focused on technological development for exploring deep ocean resources, promoting climate change advisory services, conservation of deep-sea biodiversity, research on ocean biology, and harnessing energy and freshwater from the ocean. These reforms aim to introduce specific rules to address critical challenges such as e-waste (management), plastics waste management, batteries waste management, and end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) scrapping,' said Jitendra Singh, minister of state (MoS) for earth sciences. He was responding to questions by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, Brijmohan Agrawal on three questions. Agrawal asked about the major legislative steps taken by the government for the Blue Economy district from policy-based approaches such as the Deep Ocean Mission along with the draft legislation; Secondly, he asked about the inter-ministerial consultations or projected timelines for a Blue Economy Law; and lastly, he asked about the existing mechanism which ensures sector-specific, legally binding environmental among others. Responding to the questions, Singh said that the various sectors in the blue economy are governed by different laws. Singh added that the regulatory gaps and overlaps are being addressed through the PARIVESH portal of Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change which acts as a single window for environmental, forest, wildlife, and coastal regulation zone clearances and the National Sagarmala Apex Committee and PM Gatishakti portal also aid in integrated planning. 'There are dedicated laws and guidelines for investment, accountability, and liability including 100% FDI is permitted via the automatic route in sectors like sea-ports and aquaculture. Offshore mineral block auctions are open to foreign bidders with specified conditions. The Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, adopts international liability conventions and mandates compulsory insurance for pollution damage. Offshore safety is governed by the Oil Mines Regulations, 2017, and a draft Offshore Safety Directive', the MoS said. 'The 'Harit Sagar' Green Port Guidelines (2023) mandate ESG reporting for terminal operators. The Deep Ocean Mission requires Environmental and Social Due Diligence for its projects. Maritime Zones Act, 1976 along with updated rules like the Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023, provides the legal framework for leasing and regulating offshore energy and mineral projects,' the response said.

Owaisi dubs Trump as White House's 'buffoon-in-chief' over 25% tariffs on India

"Trump has announced that Indian exports will now come with a 25% tariff. It's sad to see my country's government being bullied by a buffoon-in-chief in the White House," said Owaisi. "This tariff will come with a vague 'penalty' for trading with Russia. India is independent sovereign country. Not a vassal state that gives salami in the Emperor's court," he added further. Owaisi's reaction comes amid a series of statements from political leaders who have criticised Trump's decision to impose fresh tariffs against New Delhi. In his latest post, the US president stated that he 'does not care what India does with Russia' and that both countries 'can take their dead economies and go down together.' Trump's announcement of tariffs against India came as a surprise and shocked many due to the ongoing negotiations between India and US for a bilateral trade agreement. The fresh tariffs on India also come as part of pressure from the Trump administration amid the ongoing Ukraine war. Donald Trump had previously namedropped India, China and Brazil for their participation in BRICS and trade with Russia, stating that the three nations would be subject to additional tariffs if they do not end their trade with Russia or help establish a ceasefire in Ukraine.
