Suns swing changes for huge Lions test

Yahoo4 days ago
Gold Coast have regained key defender Sam Collins among five changes for the massive Q-Clash against the Brisbane Lions as Damien Hardwick seeks a much-needed response from his side.
The Suns, thrashed by Adelaide last week, will be without star pair Touk Miller and Daniel Rioli but will welcome back vice-captain Collins and Lachie Weller from injuries.
Alex Davies, Jy Farrar and Nick Holman also return, with Rioli and Sam Clohesy out injured, and David Swallow, Jed Walter and Ben Jepson dropped.
On a four-match winning streak, second-placed Brisbane are within two competition points of ladder leaders Collingwood and have regained in-form forward Zac Bailey after a one-match suspension.
Gold Coast have lost their last three meetings with the Lions and will likely drop out of the top eight if they fall to their Queensland rivals again at People First Stadium.
"What we have to do is win games, and that's our challenge," Suns coach Hardwick said.
"We're still in the race for something we've never achieved.
"As a coaching group and a playing group we've got a big step this week.
"We've got to take care of this step and then we'll take the next one next week."
Port Adelaide have regained skipper Connor Rozee for coach Ken Hinkley's final Showdown against red-hot Adelaide, who are unchanged as they charge towards the finals.
Fellow hopefuls Fremantle called up Isaiah Dudley and Neil Erasmus for Saturday's derby against West Coast, but captain Alex Pearce (shin) is still unavailable.
Matt Johnson and Corey Wagner are out injured, while the Eagles have recalled talented youngster Elijah Hewett after he was rested last week.
Geelong named Tom Stewart in an unchanged side for their clash with North Melbourne on Saturday night, despite the star utility being subbed out last week with knee soreness.
The Kangaroos are still without Nick Larkey (knee) and George Wardlaw, who returned from concussion in the VFL last week.
Zane Duursma was among three inclusions for North, with Callum Coleman-Jones (calf) out after his comeback lasted just 15 minutes.
There is doubt over key Richmond midfielder Tim Taranto's availability for Sunday's clash with Collingwood because of calf soreness.
Taranto was named in an extended squad alongside Noah Balta, who is back for the first time in a fortnight after completing his court-imposed curfew.
Tim Membrey, Tom Mitchell and Dan Houston were all named in an extended squad for the Magpies, but Jordan De Goey hasn't yet been cleared to return.
Melbourne named Tom Sparrow to return in Sunday's clash with St Kilda after he sat out one match through concussion protocols after high contact from North Melbourne's Tristan Xerri.

'Lawal looked like Beckham'

Stoke City manager Mark Robins said Bosun Lawal could feature in a number of positions during the upcoming Championship campaign after an injury-hit debut season with the side. The Irishman joined the Potters in August 2024 but was sidelined for much of the season with a back injury, playing just seven Championship games. But the versatile Lawal, who can play in defence or midfield, is keen to make a bigger impact this campaign and his performances in pre-season are certainly catching the eye of his boss. "There's bits and pieces where [Lawal] looks fantastic at times," Robins told BBC Radio Stoke following the 1-1 friendly draw with Premier League side Wolves on Saturday. "His feet are brilliant. He looked like [David] Beckham, coming out with the ball as well. "He can play anywhere with the feet that he's got. They are quite soft and he's got a really good touch. He can finish, as you saw on Wednesday evening [when he scored in the 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra]. "He's worked his socks off this pre-season and gives himself every chance. His build and his qualities make him a welcome addition to the squad." Listen to the full post-match interview with Mark Robins and more on BBC Sounds.

Wales defender Woodham signs for Liverpool

Wales defender Lily Woodham has joined Liverpool following her departure from Seattle Reign. Woodham, who started all Wales' games at Euro 2025, left Reign over the weekend having joined the National Women's Soccer League club in 2024. The 24-year-old left-back spent most of the 2024-25 season on loan at Crystal Palace, making 20 appearances in the Women's Super League. Woodham returns to the English top flight on a permanent basis after joining a Reds side who finished seventh last season. "I'm a fan of Liverpool so it's a dream come true really," Woodham told the Merseyside club's website. "I'm really excited to meet everyone. It already feels like a home from home and everyone has been so nice to me and welcomed me. "I just want to bring everything I can to the team and always give my all in games and training." Woodham, who is Liverpool's fourth signing of the summer, joins fellow Wales internationals Gemma Evans and Ceri Holland at the Merseyside club. The length of Woodham's contract has not been specified. She moved to America after six years at Reading, while she has also played for Bristol City and Charlton Athletic. Hoffenheim target Serbian right back Ognjen Mimović

Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reports that TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are targeting Serbian right back Ognjen Mimović of Fenerbahçe Istanbul. The Turkish journalist already correctly predicted a transfer move involving the Bundesliga club this summer when reporting on a loan out for defender Attila Szalai. Sabuncuoğlu claims that the Sinsheimers have submitted a formal offer for the 20-year-old. Hoffenehim possess an exigent need at the right back position. Valentin Gendrey was meant to fill the slot made vacant by Pavel Kaderabek's departure this summer, but the Frenchman recently succumbed to a serious injury and looks to be out long-term. Mimović only just moved to Fenerbahçe during the January 2025 transfer window on a €6.7m deal from Red Star Belgrade. He was then immediately loaned out to Zenit St. Petersburg. The now twice-capped Serbian international has generated plenty of interests from other clubs. Sabuncuoğlu reports that Antalyaspor are also interested in Mimović. The player himself – having not yet even made an appearance for his new parent club – will obviously wish to take his time making a decision on his future. At present, Mimović maintains an estimated market value of €3.5m. GGFN |
