WTC Final, AUS vs SA: Aiden Markram Creates History, Becomes First-Ever South African Batter To...
Aiden Markram on Friday created history by becoming the first-ever South African batter to score a century in an ICC tournament Final. Markram achieved this massive feat for South Africa on Day 3 of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final against Australia at Lord's, London on June 13.
The 30-year-old Markram showcased his class against a quality Australian bowling lineup with his eighth Test century at the biggest stage. Markram along with skipper Temba Bavuma have taken South Africa closer to victory in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia.

India - Sourav Ganguly - 117 vs NZ, Nairobi, 2000

Pakistan - Fakhar Zaman - 114 vs IND, The Oval, 2017
South Africa - Aiden Markram - 102* vs AUS, Lord's, 2025
Meanwhile, Markram also became the fourth batter after Jacques Kallis (113* against Sri Lanka in the 1998 ICC Knockout semifinal against SL), Herschelle Gibbs (116* against India in CT 2002 semifinals), and David Miller (101 against Australia in the World Cup 2023 semifinal) to hit a century for South Africa in ICC knockout matches.
South Africa On Cusp Of History
South Africa were 213/2 at stumps on Day 3, with opener Aiden Markram (102 not out) and skipper Temba Bavuma (65 not out) at the crease and a further 69 runs required for victory against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
The pair of Markram and Bavuma have batted superbly so far. Markram showed his class with his eighth Test century while Bavuma played the perfect support role despite being badly hampered by a dodgy hamstring.
Earlier, South Africa dismissed Australia for 207 in their second innings during the opening session, with Mitchell Starc (58 not out) catapulting the Aussies towards a lead of 300 following an enterprising partnership of 59 for the 10th wicket with Josh Hazlewood (17).

AUS vs WI: ‘Not his job to bat' – Steve Smith takes a dig at former Australia cricketer
Australia's Steve Smith (Ben Whitley/PA via AP) Australian vice-captain Steve Smith has defended national batting coach Michael Di Venuto against criticism from former Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy, who claimed Australia's batting performance had regressed under Di Venuto's tenure since 2021. Smith, speaking to reporters in Bridgetown on Sunday, rejected Healy's assessment while providing updates on his own finger injury recovery and potential return for the second Test against West Indies in St Georges. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Smith dismissed Healy's suggestion that Di Venuto should be under pressure for the team's recent batting performances. "(Di Venuto's) not the one out there actually doing the batting. Guys have to be able to figure it out themselves out in the middle sometimes. You can't have someone holding your hand out there," Smith said. 03:11 India's Day 2 at the Nets in Edgbaston | IND vs ENG Test Series Smith further defended Di Venuto's capabilities and contribution to the team. "He works as hard as anyone. He knows batting inside out. He's seen cricket all around the world, and knows all the conditions. He's done a wonderful job for a long time now, and the boys really enjoyed working with him," Smith stated. The criticism from Healy came after Australia's top order struggled in the first Test against West Indies, with Cameron Green scoring 3 and 15, and Josh Inglis making 5 and 12. "Australian cricket's batting head coach and every state batting coach, should be under pressure because there's not enough runs being scored around the nation either," Healy told SEN. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? "Michael Di Venuto, a friend of mine who is a good coach and a good man has held the job since mid-2021. In this time, our national team batting has regressed in performance at the Test level," Healy added. Statistics show a decline in the Test batting average of Australia's top three from 45.94 in 2022 to 27.04 in 2025. Smith missed the first Test due to a compound dislocation in his finger during the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's. "I looked straight down and I was like, 'That doesn't look right. That looks pretty disgusting.' I wasn't sure of the extent of the damage," Smith recalled about his injury. During his recovery in New York, Smith maintained his practice in a unique way. Arshdeep vs Morkel: WWE at the Nets! | Team India's Lighter Moment in Birmingham "My mate actually told me about it. Underneath this bridge, there was a batting cage, and he was able to throw me a few balls there. It was nice to hit a few balls," Smith said. Smith expects to return for the second Test, though with modified fielding positions due to his injury. "I don't feel any pain or anything. It's all feeling good, just getting used to the splint on and the slight, limited movement," Smith said. "It'll be just training as normal, and then probably fielding some balls in front of the wicket, which would probably be the strangest thing for me. I don't think I've ever done that in a Test match," he added. Smith also expressed support for struggling teammates Green and Sam Konstas. "These guys are good players. We've got to give them an opportunity, it doesn't come around straight away. I think back to the start of my career, I think it took me 11 innings to score a hundred. It can take some time," Smith said. The second Test between West Indies and Australia is scheduled to begin in St George's on Thursday. Jasprit Bumrah Debate: AB de Villiers Blasts Gautam Gambhir's '3 Test Declaration'
On the tour of England, one of the toughest places for the Indian team to win a Test series, the fact that the tourists would have Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best pacer in the world, available for just three games out of five, is baffling for many. Bumrah, who featured in almost the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the Mumbai Indians, has been allotted just three games against England. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir already made the decision clear, making many wonder why lesser-important games couldn't be removed from Bumrah's schedule to manage his workload. Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who also had to manage the workload of Dale Steyn during their active days, isn't onboard with the Indian team management's decision over the call to give Bumrah just three matches on the 5-Test tour. "He is probably the top bowler in the world in all formats right now. So, it's very difficult to decide a way to rest him," De Villiers said on his YouTube channel. "But in my opinion, Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game. And this Test series probably would've been the one, in my opinion, to get him ready for all five Test matches." Citing Steyn's example, De Villiers said that Bumrah should've ideally been rested in lesser-important T20Is and ODIs. "That's what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). Rest him in lesser important T20 and ODI series and get him ready for the big Test series against Australia, England, and India away from home... New Zealand to a certain extent, depending on the rankings at that time," he explained. The former Proteas captain even threw the word 'mismanagement' by the Indian team as he questioned what led to the team taking such a call. "So, I don't know if it was mismanagement or perhaps because he recently got back from injury, sort of saw the IPL as the warmup phase," he said. "Maybe, went to the surgeon, who let him know, 'You can't play the five Test matches.' So, I mean you got to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to sort of manage him well," he added. "It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final."
