Will ensure 60 tickets to women in next Assembly polls: CM Revanth Reddy
Following delimitation, likely in 2026, the Assembly strength will increase to at least 153 seats.
The chief minister said, 'Soon, women's reservations will come into force in the Assembly. Seats in the Telangana Assembly will increase to 153 after delimitation. Of them, as per 33 per cent reservations, 51 seats will be reserved for women. I will take responsibility to allocate a total of 60 seats to women.'
At present, there are nine women MLAs in the Telangana Assembly — six from Congress and three from BRS. AIMIM, BJP and CPI have no women members. There are two women members of the Cabinet — Konda Surekha and Danasari Anasuya.
The chief minister was speaking at the launch of Vana Mahotsavam-2025, a mass tree plantation drive at Prof. Jayashankar Telangana Agriculture University in Hyderabad. The government has set a target of planting 18 crore saplings under the programme.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to plant a sapling in the name of one's mother, Revanth urged mothers to plant saplings in the name of their children. 'Nature will protect us if we take care of nature,' he said.
The chief minister also appealed to people to plant at least two saplings per household, stating that Telangana would become a green zone if trees were nurtured like children.
Listing government initiatives for women, Revanth said the state provided Rs 21,000 crore in loans to self-help groups this year. He noted that women are being encouraged to set up solar plants and run government schools.
The government is providing free RTC bus travel for women and has supported them in leasing 1,000 buses to RTC, making them bus owners.
Space has also been provided for women's groups to market their products at Hitec City, the chief minister said.
Revanth reiterated his government's target of making one crore women millionaires and said self-help groups would also be formed in urban areas. He said efforts were being made to empower women in all fields and ensure they lead a life of self-respect in 'Indiramma rule'.
Forest and Environment Minister Konda Surekha and PCCF Suvarna were among those present.

NGT notice to ministry, state govt over ‘illegal' construction on forest land
1 2 3 Cuttack: National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday issued notices to the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate change, Odisha govt and several officials over alleged illegal construction on forest land in Jajpur district. The petition, filed by Kailash Chandra Nayak of Nuadihi village under Danagadi tehsil, sought intervention against construction being carried out by the state govt on forest land in Danagadi and Sukinda blocks without mandatory approval under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. The petitioner, represented by advocates Sankar Prasad Pani and Ashutosh Padhy, claimed these constructions are being carried out without any forest clearance from the Centre. A representation was submitted to the authorities on March 30, but no action has been taken so far, the petition claimed. The case was listed for the next hearing on Aug 25. According to the petition, massive concrete structures are being built using funds from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) with the approval of Jajpur district collector, who is also the managing trustee of DMF. It was alleged that on Nov 21, 2023, the collector issued a letter to the Sukinda BDO for constructing activity rooms in 132 primary schools at a cost of Rs 13.20 crore. On Jan 24, 2024, he again approved Rs 13.10 crore for additional classrooms and Rs 14 crore for activity rooms in 140 schools under Danagadi block. The petition sought a halt on all non-forest activities being carried out on forest land without prior central approval and demanded that such constructions be declared illegal.

I was disrespected at temple: Selvaperunthagai
Chennai: TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai on Tuesday said he was treated with disrespect at the Vallakottai Murugan temple consecration in Kancheepuram despite arriving on time. The DMK allies called for action against HR&CE officials while minister P K Sekarbabu visited the Congress leader and assured action. "The minister expressed regret for the incident," Selvaperunthagai said. The controversy related to the consecration ceremony of the temple, which took place after 17 years. Former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundarajan, Selvaperunthagai, and DMK (Anna Nagar) MLA M K Mohan were among those in attendance. Selvaperunthagai said he wasn't treated with the respect an elected representative deserved. "It is customary for the elected representatives to flag off the temple consecration ceremony by standing on top of the Temple Vimana, and it happens that way in all temple festivals. But during this festival, the HR&CE officials flagged it off. Similarly, there was no one to even guide me and take me to the appropriate places. None of the protocols were followed," he told TOI. Sources in the HR&CE department said officials concerned submitted a report to the higher-ups saying the Congress leader arrived late and missed the prayers, despite priests waiting for him for 30 minutes. Selvaperunthagai denied these accusations. "I was asked to come at 8.30am, and I reached the temple at 8.15am. I was waiting in the temple storeroom to participate in the prayers, but there was no one there to accompany me because of which I had to leave. Some have an ancient mindset." CPI state secretary R Mutharasan said, "This is against social justice, and stringent action should be taken against officials who are responsible for the incident." CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said Selvaperunthagai's caste (SC), was the reason for the alleged discrimination. VCK MP D Ravikumar called for abolition of discrimination in temples.

SRA law tweak: Assets to be seized if bldr defaults on rent
Mumbai: State govt is putting the screws on builders as well as slum dwellers to speed up SRA projects, reports Chaitanya Marpakwar. To recover pending rent from builders who don't pay slum dwellers after demolishing their homes, govt has introduced an amendment to The Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971 which allows rent money to be recovered from a company's property or the personal property of its directors/partners. Since outstanding rent will be considered arrears of land revenue, SRA will be able to attach and sell a builder's property to extract rent money. Govt has also reduced the time given to slum dwellers who don't agree to join a rehab scheme from 120 days to 60 days after more than 50% of slum dwellers have given consent. The amendment bill was introduced in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday and will be discussed later this week. SRA CEO M Kalyankar said that the amendments would help fast-track SRA schemes and make sure that slum dwellers get rent on time. SRA officials said around Rs 620 crore in rent is still due from builders. Officials said to recover arrears of land revenue, govt has various legal processes at its disposal including serving notices, attaching property, and even imprisoning the defaulter. "Under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code (MLRC), govt can attach and sell the defaulter's movable and immovable property to recover the dues. In some cases, bank accounts or lockers may be attached. Right now the SRA can only issue stop work notices to the builder for not paying rent or stop giving new permissions but beyond that there is no deterrent," an official said. Some other amendments in the bill include those related to handing over land to govt agencies like MMRDA, MHADA, MSRDC and CIDCO to redevelop slums on lease within 30 days of issuance of the letter of intent.
