Southern Railway GM orders for safety audit of New Pamban Railway Bridge
Consequently, the PSCO and PCEE along with Chief Signal Engineer, officials of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited and the original equipment manufacturers would make a detailed site inspection followed by a technical meeting at Pamban Bridge on May 7 and 8. The decision on site inspection was taken during the General Manager's weekly safety meeting held on April 22 in which critical issues related to Pamban Bridge, specifically regarding synchronisation of the lifting system and the auto application of brake were discussed.
The GM has instructed the senior officials to resolve the issues at the earliest. The Prime Minister operated the 72.5-metre-long vertical lift for allowing Coast Guard ships to pass under it on the Pamban navigational channel. The movable deck was lifted up for 17 metres.
Lift stuck midway
However, within a few minutes, when the railway officials attempted to lower the movable deck, it got stuck midway, much to the embarrassment of railway officials.
Meanwhile, rail movement continued uninterrupted on the bridge. However, the vertical span was lifted only on April 30 for the first time for passage of big fishing vessels.
A railway source said that a preliminary meeting was held with representatives of Control Care Automation that has supplied SCADA system for operation of the movable deck and officials of RVNL on April 28.
The meeting underlined various issues that required site inspection with all the stakeholders involved in design, construction, commissioning and testing of the vertical lift span.
Representatives of the original equipment manufacturers of all electro-mechanical components, the designers of the bridge, civil contractor and officials of RVNL pertaining to mechanical, civil, electrical and signal departments would participate in the two-day inspection, termed to be high importance, for the safe and uninterrupted operation of the New Pamban Rail Bridge.
However, a senior railway official downplayed the conduct of safety audit claiming that the zonal railway wanted to thoroughly check the electromechanical system of the vertical lift.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan chairs meeting aimed at boosting cotton productivity
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): A significant meeting aimed at boosting cotton productivity was convened on Friday at the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, under the leadership of Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The meeting saw in-depth discussions on the history of cotton, the current scenario, challenges, and future strategies for increasing cotton productivity in India, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare said. Also present on the occasion were Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Haryana Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana, Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate, Vice Chancellors of agricultural universities from various states, ICAR Director General ML Jat, officials, stakeholders, scientists, and farmers. Before the meeting, the Union Agriculture Minister visited cotton fields, interacted with farmers, and listened to their issues and concerns. The formal meeting began with Shivraj Singh Chouhan's address, where he emphasised that the meet was being held on the sacred land of Tamil Nadu, one of India's most ancient states, with the Tamil language having a 5,000-year-old heritage. Clothes come from cotton, and cotton is produced by our farmers. Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy, and farmers are its soul. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is fully committed to farmers' welfare,' he said. However, the Minister acknowledged the challenges in cotton production in our country as India's productivity lags behind compared to other countries. The BT cotton variety, once developed to increase yields, is now facing a threat from diseases, resulting in declining productivity. He stressed that India must take every possible step -- just like other nations -- to improve cotton productivity using modern technologies and by developing virus-resistant, high-yielding seeds. He emphasized the importance of timely delivery of these improved seeds to farmers and urged scientists to work with full commitment to ensure this. He further stated that the issues and demands raised by farmers from different states will shape the future strategy. To manufacture good-quality fabric, high-quality cotton is essential, and achieving this is a national goal. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India is on the path to glory, prosperity, and power. 'In a 'Viksit Bharat', we shouldn't have to import cotton from abroad. Meeting the nation's cotton needs with domestic high-quality produce is both a challenge and a target -- one that we must achieve together,' Chouhan said. Chouhan also noted that while the textile industry often demands the removal of import duties to allow cheap foreign cotton, farmers argue that this hampers local cotton prices. Hence, the government must balance the interests of both farmers and the industry. Governor for 3-pronged strategy to combat climate change
Hyderabad: In a strong push for climate action, Governor of Telangana Jishnu Dev Varma, called for a focused three-pronged strategy to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs). The Governor emphasised that this approach would significantly benefit the economy, environment and society at large. Echoing the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—who has united the global community on climate action and continues to lead efforts both domestically and internationally—the Governor underlined the urgent need for coordinated efforts across key sectors. The Governor stressed the involvement of all relevant departments, including Energy, Transport, Buildings, Rural and Urban Development, Industry, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in promoting renewable energy and accelerating energy efficiency measures. 'Energy Efficiency alone can contribute over 40 per cent in mitigating climate change impacts,' he noted. As part of this climate roadmap, the Governor proposed: Aggressive afforestation efforts led by the Forest and Environment Department, with a long-term target to increase Telangana's green cover to 50 per cent by 2047. Mass awareness campaigns involving all stakeholders—public and private—with a special focus on women and students through schools, colleges, and universities to promote energy conservation and sustainable practices. As part of ongoing outreach efforts, A Chandra Sekhara Reddy, Southern Regional Media Adviser to BEE, along with Sr officers of EESL briefed the Governor on key developments in the field of energy efficiency. He outlined the scope of BEE's Standards and Labelling (S&L) programme, under which 39 appliances—16 of them mandatory, including air conditioners, fans, and refrigerators—are covered.
