Low pressure to bring very heavy rain in south Bengal for two days
Kolkata, Jul 24 (PTI) A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy downpour, in the southern districts of West Bengal for the coming two days, the IMD said on Thursday.
A low-pressure system, which has formed over the north Bay of Bengal, will become well-marked by Friday and move west-northwestwards towards West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha coasts, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its forecast.
It said that owing to the low-pressure area and strong monsoon flow, heavy to very rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts and heavy rainfall at one or two places in the other districts of south Bengal on Thursday.
The IMD said that heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur at a few places, with extremely heavy downpour at one or two places is very likely over Bankura and Paschim Medinipur districts, while heavy to very heavy downpour will occur at one or two places over Jhargram, Purba Medinipur, Purulia, Hooghly and South 24 Parganas districts on Friday.
The sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri are likely to receive heavy rainfall from Friday to Sunday, it said.
Advising fishermen not to venture into the sea over the north and central Bay of Bengal and along and off the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha, the IMD said squally weather with surface wind speed reaching up to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over these areas from July 24 to 28.

IMD predicts light to moderate rain till August 10
NEW DELHI: The national capital is likely to see yet another week of showers, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms to prevail till August 10. On Monday, the capital saw no rainfall despite a cloudy sky throughout the day. Weather officials noted the possibility of thundercloud development by evening or night and expected light showers in the early hours of Tuesday. However, no precipitation was recorded across key observatories, including Safdarjung, Palam, Lodi Road, and Ayanagar, between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Temperatures in the city hovered below the seasonal norm. The maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 33.4 degree celsius, about 0.8 degree celsus below normal, while the minimum stood at 27.2 degree celsius, which was slightly above average. Similar trends were observed across the capital, with maximum temperatures ranging between 31.8 degree celsus and 33.4 degree celsus and minimums between 25.6 degree celsus and 28.1 degree celsus. Humidity levels remained high, peaking at 85% and dipping to a minimum of 66% over the past 24 hours. Winds blew mostly from the west at speeds up to 17 kmph. According to the IMD, the monsoon trough currently lies to the north of Delhi, extending from Amritsar through Uttarakhand to the northeast. Multiple cyclonic circulations persist over Himachal Pradesh, south Rajasthan, and other adjoining regions, which are contributing to the capital's current weather pattern. For the rest of the week, Delhi is expected to see partly cloudy skies with a continued possibility of very light to light rain or thundershowers, especially in the evenings, the forecast said. Maximum temperatures are likely to remain in the range of 32-34 degree celsus till the weekend.

Flood alert to people on banks of Bhavani River
Agency: PTI Erode (Tamil Nadu), Aug 5 (PTI) PWD and Revenue Department have issued flood alert on Tuesday morning to the people living on the banks of River Bhavani. The officials said that due to rain and discharge of water from various dams in Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts, a huge quantity of surplus water from the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) Reservoir will be discharged after the water level reaches 102 feet. At 8 am on Tuesday, the dam was receiving 6,937 cusecs (Cubic feet per second) of water, water level was at 101.71 feet (against the full level of 105 feet) and storage stood at 30.08 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic) feet (against full level of 32.8), they said. Inflow and storage may increase suddenly, necessitating an increase in discharge, letting out all the inflow into the river, they added. So, officials urged the people living on the Banks of River Bhavani at Bhavanisagar, Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Bhavani areas to go to safer places with their cattle and belongings to avert any untoward incident. At 8 am on Tuesday, authorities are releasing 2,800 cusecs of water from the dam. Of this, 1,500 cusecs are let into LBP canal, 800 cusecs into Thadapalli and Arakkankottai canals, 400 cusecs into Kalingarayan canal, and 100 cusecs into Bhavani River for drinking water in Sathyamangalam and Gobichettipalayam areas. Police and Revenue officials are visiting the LBP canal area and the Bhavani River Bank, to assist the evacuation of people and their properties. Light rain likely in Delhi

The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.8 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season's average. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 32 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity at 8.30 am was recorded at 75 per cent. No rainfall was reported in the past 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department. Delhi's air quality remained in the satisfactory category, with the Central Pollution Control Board recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 99.
