Save the date! International Monarch Monitoring Blitz: 25 July

Cision Canada7 hours ago
MONTRÉAL, July 14, 2025 /CNW/ - Espace pour la vie invites you to participate in the 9th edition of the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz, which runs from 25 July to 3 August 2025. This is a unique opportunity for people and organizations in Canada, the United States and Mexico to come together beyond international boundaries to protect this emblematic North American species.
For ten days, the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz invites the North American population to locate milkweed plants and look for eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises and butterflies in order to help estimate the size of the monarch's summer population. To take part, you need only transmit your monarch and milkweed plant observations via the Insectarium's Mission Monarch program.
Crucial data for monarch protection
The monarch's population has declined by 90% over the last 25 years, with the population size recorded in Mexico's wintering grounds last winter being the second lowest on record. Several factors are contributing to this sharp decline across the monarch's breeding and migratory range: loss of breeding habitat, pesticides and climate change.
Since monarch and milkweed populations cover a great deal of North America, the participation of the population is essential for deepening our knowledge of these two intimately connected species.
These observations help identify priority areas for monarch conservation and guide concrete actions on the ground. All data collected during the Blitz will be made available through the Trinational Monarch Knowledge Network, hosted on GBIF, where it will support large-scale analyses by scientists, researchers and conservation practitioners.
With monarch conservation gaining momentum across North America, there has never been a better time for communities to get involved. Step outside, connect with nature, and be part of the movement to protect the monarch butterfly!

"The Monarch Blitz is an example where community science – thanks to coordinated local action – can have a true continent-wide impact on the preservation of biodiversity. That collaboration, which brings together Canada, Mexico and the United States Mexico, embodies a real solution for implementing protective measures aimed at conserving the monarch butterfly."
Wendy Caldwell, Executive Director, Monarch Joint Venture
"The Monarch Joint Venture is proud to support the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz, a powerful example of international collaboration to better understand and protect one of North America's most iconic migratory species. Community science plays a vital role in tracking monarch populations and informing conservation action across borders—and every observation counts."
Jerónimo Chávez, Project Manager, Correo Real Program, Profauna A.C.
"An increase in the area occupied by the monarch butterfly on its wintering grounds in Mexico during the 2024–2025 season gave us great joy this year; it provided impetus to step up our commitment to conserve this incredible migratory phenomenon. An important part of the conservation of this species is compiling information all along its migratory journey throughout the year. We are therefore inviting everyone in North America with an interest in the monarch butterfly to join the Monarch Blitz in 2025. In Mexico, the Blitz enables us to map out the local (non-migratory) monarch butterfly populations and to continue promoting their conservation."

Canada and the Northwest Territories Partner on Innovative, AI-Based Core Scanning Initiative to Support Critical Minerals Development

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI, July 14, 2025 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories are working together to advance a new geoscience research initiative that leverages artificial intelligence (AI), digital scanning technologies and historic drill cores to unlock the North's mineral potential and help solidify Canada's position as a global leader in resource development and critical minerals. As part of this initiative, Canada and the Northwest Territories will pilot a project to scan, digitize and analyze existing drill cores from the Northwest Territories Geological Survey's collection using cutting-edge techniques to highlight new areas of high critical-mineral potential. These core scans and their associated data will be made available through a centralized digital platform, helping to reduce exploration risk, re-evaluate existing discoveries and enable new mineral development opportunities across the North. This program will be centred on drill cores from the Slave Geological Province in the Northwest Territories, one of Canada's most promising regions for mineral exploration and critical mineral development. This vast, underexplored area is home to past-producing mines and significant greenfield potential, particularly for critical minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt and rare earth elements. By applying AI-driven analysis to historical core samples, both governments aim to spur new investment by giving industry the tools it needs to unlock untapped mineral value — without further disturbing the land. This work will form the foundation for a future Canadian Digital Core Library and reflects both governments' shared commitment to breaking down silos and building one Canadian economy. It also supports national priorities around clean growth, Indigenous partnership, Arctic sovereignty and securing the supply chains that power Canada's transition to a net-zero future. Quotes "Through this groundbreaking collaboration between the Government of Canada and the Northwest Territories, we are harnessing advanced technology to revolutionize how we understand and manage our mineral resources. By bringing together federal and territorial expertise and cutting–edge artificial intelligence, we are laying the foundation for a smarter, more-sustainable resource future that catalyzes investment into Canadian mining." The Honourable Tim Hodgson Minister of Energy and Natural Resources " This initiative puts the Northwest Territories at the forefront of mineral innovation in Canada. By modernizing how we analyze and share geological data, we're opening the door to new exploration, new partnerships and new economic opportunities — all while maintaining our commitment to Indigenous leadership and environmental stewardship." The Honourable Caitlin Cleveland Northwest Territories Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment "Digitizing existing core samples to reduce exploration risk is a strategic use of technology to help advance the future mineral resource opportunities of the Northwest Territories. Realizing the mineral potential of the Northwest Territories depends on having the right infrastructure; that includes clean energy and a capacity to move goods across the vast distances of the Territory. That's why we're advancing the Mackenzie Valley Highway and the Arctic Security Corridor. These items of foundational infrastructure will allow us to capitalize on mineral wealth now and create lasting opportunities for Northerners." The Honourable Caroline Wawzonek Northwest Territories Minister of Infrastructure, Energy and Supply Chains Quick Facts The initiative supports development of a Canadian Digital Core Library to digitize and share drill core samples from across the country. The Slave Geological Province is one of Canada's most promising regions for critical minerals, with past-producing mines and vast areas of underexplored geology. Making geoscience data more accessible can accelerate exploration, reduce environmental impacts and attract private investment — particularly in high-cost, high-reward northern regions. The initiative complements national and territorial investments in strategic infrastructure and clean energy, including the proposed Arctic Security Corridor and Taltson Hydro Expansion Project, which aim to support sustainable, year-round resource development and connect northern mineral resources to global markets. The project contributes to Canada's Critical Minerals Strategy and aligns with priorities around economic development, Arctic security, Indigenous partnership and nation-building infrastructure. Bridge Capture™ enables sensitive, scalable liquid biopsy in colorectal cancer pilot

Clinical study in Scientific Reports shows Bridge Capture™ detects key mutations from blood samples in metastatic colorectal cancer patients TURKU, Finland, July 14, 2025 /CNW/ -- Genomill Health, a biotechnology company pioneering simplified targeted library preparation for next-generation sequencing announces the results of a clinical pilot study published in Scientific Reports, demonstrating the high sensitivity of its Bridge Capture™ technology for mutation profiling in cell free DNA of metastatic colorectal cancer patients. Study shows that Bridge Capture™ matches the sensitivity of droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) - a gold standard in the field - while providing unlimited panel scalability and simple and cost-efficient workflow that enables decentralized NGS testing. The study was performed in collaboration with professor Ari Ristimäki's group (Helsinki University Hospital) and demonstrated a high concordance of Bridge Capture™ to ddPCR and Ion AmpliSeq™ while revealing several other, previously unknown oncogenic mutations that reflected disease progression across longitudinal plasma samples. Prof. Ristimäki was impressed by Bridge Capture™'s capability to combine highly scalable, sensitive targeted sequencing with cost-efficiency and ease of use. He sees this as an important advance that could significantly expand the use of liquid biopsies in treatment monitoring. "Bridge Capture matched or exceeded gold-standard methods in detecting mutations in patient samples. Its ability to track changes over time could be a powerful tool for monitoring cancer progression and relapse." said Simona Adamusová, Doctoral Researcher and co-first author. "This clinical pilot study highlights Bridge Capture's readiness for real-world applications in liquid biopsy," added Manu Tamminen, CEO and Co-Founder of Genomill. "The unparalleled simplicity of the laboratory workflow and the compatibility across multiple sequencing platforms lays ground for distributed, decentralized, longitudinal cancer diagnostics. By removing cost and infrastructural constraints that currently hinder the routine use of liquid biopsies, we seek to establish Bridge Capture as an enabling technology for highly accessible cancer diagnostics." Bridge Capture™ is an embodiment of Genomill's Geno1 ® technologies that are based on circular DNA and linear DNA amplification. Juha-Pekka Pursiheimo, CTO and inventor of the technology, added: "Bridge Capture establishes a new standard for NGS library design by using circular single-stranded DNA - a more flexible and robust alternative to traditional linear libraries. Together with our PCR-free DNA amplification approaches, this positions Genomill to revolutionize NGS library preparation."
