Aussie prop Tupou hopes Racing move will bring smile back
Couple with a loss of form, it resulted in the 59-time capped prop not being offered a new contract by Rugby Australia.
"There is still a lot of work to do before that smile is back," he told The Times after propping down for the NSW Waratahs in their 21-10 loss to the touring British and Irish Lions on Saturday.
"It's only fair that they (Australia) look for someone else who can do the job because at the moment, I can't do it.
"At the end of the day, it's business. Sometimes you've just got to look out for your family and that's what I'm doing."
The Tongan-born Tupou, who was schooled in New Zealand and qualified for the Wallabies through residency, showed a flash of his humour when he revealed he had spoken to Owen Farrell before deciding to join Racing.
Former England fly-half Farrell left Racing to rejoin his old Premiership club Saracens in June after an underwhelming one season stay in the French capital.
"I asked him if he had left all the money at Racing for me," said the tighthead who will fill the gap left by Thomas Laclayat, who joined Pau.
Racing limped to 10th place in last season's Top 14 -- head coach Stuart Lancaster was fired before the end of the campaign -- and subsequently lost Farrell and scrum half Nolann Le Garrec.
Aside from Tupou, Racing notably brought in England international forwards Jonny Hill and Nathan Hughes.
Hill, 31, played 20 times for England while the 34-year-old Hughes has 22 caps.
Leo Carbonneau, a 20-year-old France under-20 international and the son of two-time Five Nations Grand Slam-winning scrum-half Philippe, comes in from Brive to replace Le Garrec, who has joined La Rochelle.
Argentinian Geronimo Prisciantelli joins from Italian club Zebre in place of Farrell.
Wingers Wilfried Hulleu, from Grenoble, and Selestino Ravutaumada fom Fijian Drua, locks Thomas Lainault, also from Grenoble, Lekima Tagitagivalu from Pau, and centre Joey Manu, a New Zealander who was playing in Japan, complete the recruitment.

British and Irish Lions' Owen Farrell looks on after the rugby match between the British and Irish Lions and the ACT Brumbies in Canberra on July 9 The former England captain is set to end a period in the international wilderness as the Lions continue their nine-game tour with their fifth and final warm-up on Saturday. Farrell made the dash to Australia last week after his father, Lions coach Andy Farrell, summoned him as cover when utility back Elliot Daly broke his arm. The 33-year-old, on his fourth Lions tour, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup, and is coming off an underwhelming and injury-plagued season with French club Racing 92. The Lions are unbeaten in four matches in Australia after wins over four Super Rugby sides, including 36-24 against ACT Brumbies on Wednesday in Canberra. But they endured a sloppy performance against the Brumbies, with notable issues around the breakdown. Numerous changes The Lions have made numerous changes with Tadhg Beirne to take the captaincy reins, while young star Henry Pollock returns. Scrum-half Ben White will make his first start for the Lions. The Australia-New Zealand side, the first time the powerhouses have joined forces since 1989, will be led jointly by David Havili and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto. Coach Les Kiss picked 17 internationals in his matchday 23 for Saturday's final warm-up game for the Lions before they face Australia in the opening Test on July 19 in Brisbane. "We are in a great position just over a week out from the first Test," coach Farrell said. "The players now have another chance to put in a strong team performance and put a hand up for selection for the Test matches against the Wallabies. "Les Kiss has assembled a strong squad with lots of international experience and we know that he will have them well organised and they will bring a lot of physicality to the contest.' France make 10 changes to starting side for second All Blacks Test
Ten-cap hooker Gaetan Barlot was retained in the side and was named captain, with experienced centre Gael Fickou left out of the matchday 23. Four of the five who played in the Top 14 final on June 29 are starting along with Leo Barre, who arrived late in New Zealand due to a thigh injury. Barlot, 28, will lead an inexperienced team with an average of only four caps each among the starters. The most experienced French players such as prop Rabah Slimani (58 caps) and wing Gabin Villiere (19) were left out of the 23 altogether, while Cameron Woki (31) and Romain Taofifenua (55) will again start on the bench. "It's a rotation for stimulation, competition," Galthie told reporters. "We brought the players to the end of the world. They have to play. We absolutely wanted to play them as quickly as possible." New Zealand coach Scott Robertson made just three changes to his starting side, two of which were injury enforced. Captain Scott Barrett was ruled out with a torn calf, and wing Sevu Reece was concussed. Patrick Tuipulotu and Caleb Clarke, respectively, replace them with Rieko Ioane switching to the right wing, while wing Timoci Tavatavanawai will debut off the bench. Havili, Salakaia-Loto to lead Australia-New Zealand against Lions
Coach Les Kiss picked 17 internationals in his matchday 23 for Saturday's final warm-up game for the Lions before they face Australia in the opening Test on July 19 in Brisbane. Head coach Andy Farrell's side are unbeaten in four matches in Australia after wins over four Super Rugby sides, including 36-24 against ACT Brumbies on Wednesday in Canberra. The Australia-New Zealand side, the first time the powerhouses have joined forces since 1989, could provide the Lions with their biggest test so far. Every player in the starting XV has international caps, with Salakaia-Loto part of a Queensland Reds-heavy tight five alongside Aidan Ross, Jeffrey Toomaga-Allen and Angus Blyth. Former Bordeaux flanker Pete Samu starts at flanker, with All Blacks Shannon Frizell and Hoskins Sotutu completing the forward pack. Havili, who recently led the Canterbury Crusaders to the Super Rugby title, is at inside centre alongside former All Blacks centre Ngani Laumape. Shaun Stevenson will start at fullback. "After speaking with all the players we thought the co-captaincy model with natural leaders like David and Lukhan would really suit this team and what we represent," said Kiss, who will succeed Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach next year and is being assisted by former All Blacks head coach Ian Foster. "This week has been building nicely and the boys have put a lot of time into getting to know each other. "In forming new bonds, many of them have discovered they have more in common than they originally thought. "We have named an experienced, powerful starting side for Saturday and we know our bench will make an impact when they get their opportunity." AUNZ Invitational XV (15-1): Shaun Stevenson; AJ Lam, Ngani Laumape, David Havili (co-capt), Marika Koroibete; Tane Edmed, Folau Fakatava; Hoskins Sotutu, Pete Samu, Shannon Frizell; Lukhan Salakaia-Loto (co-capt), Angus Blyth; Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Aidan Ross
