Tripura CM urges Centre to increase upper loan cap in externally aided projects

News182 days ago
Agartala, Jul 25 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said the state has urged the Centre to increase the upper cap of loans under externally aided development projects.
According to existing guidelines, the northeastern state can take a maximum loan amounting to Rs 4,000 crore under externally aided projects in a financial year.
While speaking at a government programme in Kashba in Sepahijala district, the chief minister said that with the state spending a huge amount of money on infrastructure building, the upper limit of loans under externally aided schemes often falls short for undertaking new projects.
'At present, we are allowed to receive loans amounting to Rs 4,000 crore under externally aided projects in a financial year, which is not sufficient for the state. I have already written to the Centre to increase the upper cap of receiving loans to speed up development," he said.
Asserting that tourism can boost the state's socio-economic condition, the chief minister said the government has increased the annual budget substantially to develop infrastructure as much as possible.
'The state's budget has increased from Rs 27,000 crore in 2024-25 FY to Rs 32,000 crore during the fiscal 2025-26, and Rs 7,000 crore has been earmarked for capital expenditure. If we spend more on infrastructure, the GSDP will increase," he said.
'Despite being a small state, Sikkim, with a population of 7 lakh, has the highest gross state domestic product (GSDP) among the eight northeastern states, banking on tourism. If we develop tourism-related infrastructures, Tripura can surpass Sikkim," he said.
Currently, Tripura has the second-highest GSDP.Saha said the Tourism department has taken several initiatives to promote the state's spiritual and eco tourism globally.
'Tata Group is set to convert the iconic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala into a five-star hotel. Once the project is completed, tourists from foreign nations will visit the northeastern state to see temples, iconic structures and eco tourism sites," he said.
Taking a dig at the erstwhile government, the chief minister said the previous dispensation did not try to develop the royal family's historic buildings.
'We have begun to restore and develop the royal structures, including the Ujjayanta Palace, to present their creations before the world," he said. PTI PS SBN SBN

Delhi University to release 2nd round of UG seat allocation on Monday

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) The Delhi University (DU) will announce the second round of undergraduate seat allocations at 5 pm on Monday as it continues with its centralised admission process under the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS-UG) for the 2025-26 academic session. The upcoming list is expected to reflect significant internal reshuffling as more than 43,000 candidates have opted for upgrading their seats after the first round of admissions. According to DU officials, the second list will incorporate these preferences alongside new seat vacancies, paving the way for thousands of students to switch colleges or programmes based on merit and availability. The DU had earlier made 93,166 seat allocations against 71,624 undergraduate seats across 69 colleges and 79 programmes. As of now, 62,565 candidates have confirmed their admission. While 16,126 candidates have chosen to freeze their seats, a large majority – 43,741 — have opted for upgrades. These students are now waiting for the second round, hoping for movement to their preferred colleges or programmes. The upgrade and reordering window for the current round will remain open till 4:59 pm on July 25. Candidates can also check the latest list of vacant seats on DU's admission portal. The CSAS-UG process uses CUET-UG scores along with college and programme preferences, category reservations and other eligibility criteria for allocations. Seats have been allotted across multiple categories, including Unreserved, OBC, EWS, SC, ST, PwBD, Kashmiri Migrants, Sikh Minority, Single Girl Child and Orphan. Meanwhile, performance-based courses, such as Hindustani Music, Karnataka Music, Percussion Music, Physical Education and Fine Arts, will see allocations in the third round. The total issue size is likely to be as much as $1 billion, according to people aware of the matter. One of the sources said the company is set to file its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in the coming days. With this, Lenskart will join other large new-age firms like Groww, Meesho, PhysicsWallah, and Pine Labs that are filing IPO documents this year. In total, nearly 14 venture-backed new-age companies are aiming to raise over Rs 20,000 crore from the public markets in 2025. Filings also showed that Lenskart's shareholders, including SoftBank, Kedaara Capital, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Fidelity and Temasek, have approved a new employee stock option plan, Esop 2025, comprising 7.2 million shares. Data from Tracxn shows that about 19% of Lenskart's shares are currently earmarked for its Esop pool. ET had reported on July 10 that Lenskart plans to issue additional shares to founder and CEO Peyush Bansal through a structured payout, which may increase his holding by 1.5-2%. Bansal and his sister Neha Bansal, also a cofounder, together own 14-15% of the company. Lenskart, which won The ET Startup Awards 2024 in the Startup of the Year category, operates in India and other markets such as the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia, Japan and South Korea. In FY24, Lenskart's operating revenue grew 43% year-on-year to Rs 5,428 crore, while its net loss narrowed to Rs 10 crore from Rs 64 crore in FY23. In an October interview with ET, Peyush Bansal said the company is investing $200 million in a new manufacturing plant in southern India. Currently, Lenskart makes frames and lenses at its facility in Rajasthan. Lenskart's last round of funding in June 2024 valued the company at $5 billion. US-based Fidelity marked up the valuation of the omnichannel eyewear retailer by more than a fifth to $6.1 billion at the end of April. The company's omnichannel strategy, combining its website with more than 2,500 retail outlets, has been a major growth driver. While online sales have outpaced store sales growth in the past two to three years, Lenskart continues to expand its offline footprint also showed that Lenskart has appointed PaySense cofounder Sayali Karanjkar and IndMoney founder Ashish Kashyap as independent directors on its Bansal has been named chairman, managing director and CEO of Lenskart, while Neha Bansal has been appointed executive director.
