Jockey, 24, in hospital after horror fall saw air ambulance called to racecourse
An air ambulance was called to Worcester Racecourse after it was feared a young jockey had been seriously hurt in a fall. Oliver Boyden was riding Dreamweaver in a novices' limited handicap hurdle on Thursday afternoon when the horse came down in the home straight.
Reappearing after a mammoth 1,045-day absence, the gelding was a long way behind eventual winner Sixty Plus at the time. The motion of the fall gave Boyden no chance to stay in the saddle and he landed heavily, as medics rushed to the scene.
Racecourse chiefs delayed the final race while the rider, competing for local trainers Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, was assisted. An air ambulance was called but conditional jockey Boyden, 24, was taken by road to be assessed in hospital, where he remained overnight.
His agent Ian Popham told Mirror Racing: "It was a very nasty fall. I spoke to his mother this morning and thankfully they think he is going to be OK.
"He was knocked out and is concussed but the scans have shown there are no broken bones. He's just waiting for the doctors to see him again and hopefully it won't be too long before he is going home."
Boyden has ridden three winners from 29 rides under rules, with one coming for Dreamweaver's stable aboard The Dream Goes On in a hurdle at Hereford four months ago.
The other two were for trainer Olly Murphy on Wolfspear, a horse running the colours of the yard's racing club. In May 2022, stablemate Friary Land opened Boyden's account in point-to-points at Dingley, when he was classed as an amateur jockey.
The final race at Worcester, scheduled for 5.17pm, went off at 5.29pm - around 45 minutes after the incident happened. The stewards held an enquiry to establish why the air ambulance took off as the horses were at the start and a report was forwarded to the British Horseracing Authority for further consideration.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to an incident at Worcester Racecourse at 4.49pm yesterday, one ambulance, a paramedic officer, a BASICS doctor from the Mercia Accident Rescue Service and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford attended the scene.
"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man. He was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to hospital by land ambulance."

Berry had no idea until after he finished he started receiving messages alerting him to what had been going on in the background. He took a sceen shot of the clip and posted it on his social media with the message, 'Protests about the toilet roll shortage in Galway have intensified'. Among the best responses were 'cracking selfie', 'some craic' and 'first-time cheekpieces, Fran'. Berry told Mirror Racing: 'It was quite noisy by the last race on Saturday with a syndicate-owned horse having won. We were positioned inside the winners' ring and there was a lot of cheering going on. 'As we were doing a wrap we were completely unaware of what happened behind us. As soon as we finished up I got a lot of WhatsApp message with pictures and video of the lad in question. 'It's the nature of Galway, you can see everything and anything. There was no malice, it was just lads on a day out having too good a time. It was all taken in good humour.' He added: 'There was no toilet roll shortage by the way, it was just a caption to go with it. 'Galway is very easy going, the three lads looked to be enjoying themselves and no harm was done.'

Callum Rodriguez was one of five riders who missed opportunities at Goodwood on Thursday when the aircraft encountered engine trouble. Rowan Scott, PJ McDonald, Tom Eaves and Jack Garritty were the other jockeys who set off from Bagby Airfield in north Yorkshire. Around half an hour into the flight, the pilot turned the plane around and returned to base. No-one was hurt in the incident. Two days on, Rodriguez headed to Goodwood by car for his first opportunity since in the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes - and made it count on Owen Burrows-saddled filly Waardah (7-2). Talking calmly, the jockey said the emergency landing was "nothing to get too worried about" as the pilot kept everything under control. "There was a small fault with the aircraft straight away after we left the ground and the pilot decided to turn around and get us back to base," he told Mirror Racing. "Unfortunately we didn't have time to jump in the car and get here for our rides. It was a very minor incident but just frustrating. "It wasn't scary. We weren't long into the journey and it was one of things." In the Group Two race on Saturday, Rodriguez settled his lightly-race mount in rear and she made progress to take the lead with two furlongs to run. Danielle threw down a strong challenge on her seasonal debut and got to within three quarters of a length, with the front two clear of Goodie Two Shoes. "'t was a messy start to the week, but we made sure that we were on four wheels today," he added. "I am very pleased to get that one off my back. 'Waardah is a rapidly improving filly and has a nice way of racing – she was relaxed last time, was strong through the line, and took a bit of pulling up. We were confident that she would get this trip and the ground was perfect. 'She switched off real good early and has actually taken me into the race a little bit too easily. She just idled a touch when she got there and needed the other horse to help her along. It was a very good performance."

Nigel Farage throws support behind campaign to stop introduction of racing tax
The Reform leader said he would fight against the tax proposal during an interview at Goodwood where he was a guest of leading racehorse owners Dr Jim and Fitri Hay Nigel Farage has thrown his support behind racing's campaign to stop the government carrying out a tax raid which the industry claims will threaten the sport's future. The Treasury last month completed a public consultation over plans to harmonise remote gambling duties which would treat horse racing on the same level as other forms of gambling. The British Horseracing Authority has launched a petition and urged participants and punters to lobby their MPs to argue that racing should be taxed at a lower rate. The BHA has produced economic analysis which has estimated that racing could lose at least £66 million if the tax is set on a par with online games of chance, putting tens of thousands of jobs at risk. Reform leader Farage was at Goodwood on Friday where he was attending as a guest of leading racehorse owners Dr Jim and Fitri Hay. Last year former Prime Minister Liz Truss was among their entourage. Speaking to ITV Racing, Farage said: 'I love racing, be it Flat, be it jumps. It's a really important part of what we do as a country, and there are some concerns around it. 'I think there is an ignorance here. There is an an assumption from members of Parliament that all gambling is bad, all gambling leads to ruin, and look, some of those machines where you can go and lose your entire money in an afternoon are pretty addictive. 'I do think horse racing is different. You are making an individual decision each time to have a bet. There are checks and safeguards in place.' Asked if he thought that was the majority view in government, he replied: 'No. I think I'm in a minority. 'It's worrying for the racing industry because what they are proposing to put in is going to do the most enormous amount of damage. 'And I see this again and again and again, people with little understanding of what they are legislating on making decisions for everybody else. I will certainly be fighting.
