Lionsgate Explores AI for Content Adaptation and Production Efficiency
Lionsgateis actively exploring artificial intelligence, specifically through a partnership withAIstartup Runway, to adapt existing content and streamline production, a move that could reshape how films are created and distributed. The studio inked a deal with AI startup Runway last September, marking Runway's first pact with a Hollywood studio.
Michael Burns, Lionsgate's vice chairman, revealed toNew York Magazinethat the studio is experimenting with various AI applications. One significant potential use involves repackaging the studio's extensive library, allowing for adjustments in tone, format, and even rating. This could enable the creation of softer, kid-friendly cuts or even convert live-action films into animated versions. Burns stated that a live-action film could be transformed into a PG-13 anime version in just three hours. Burns notes that with the help of AI, the filmmaker can take their signature action franchises likeJohn Wickand theHunger Gamesand 'Now we can say, 'Do it in anime, make it PG-13.' Three hours later, I'll have the movie.' While the executive reiterates that actors will still be paid, this move means that ' I can do that, and now I can resell it.'
Furthermore, AI could offer substantial cost savings in production. Burns cited an example where a complex shot involving '10,000 soldiers on a hillside with a bunch of horses in a snowstorm' could be generated by AI for approximately $10,000, avoiding a multi-million dollar shoot. This strategic integration of AI aims to enable the production of movies and television shows that would otherwise be financially unfeasible.

Lionsgate brought some intense energy to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con with a brand-new trailer for The Long Walk , giving fans their first look at the highly anticipated Stephen King adaptation and you can watch tyhat trailer for yourself below! We also got an exclusive screening of the first 20 minutes, and it's as brutal and gripping as you'd expect. I've been incredibly excited for this movie, and it looks like it's going to deliver a very intense and emotional experience. The legendary Stephen King introduced the clip via video message, reminding fans of the story's dark roots while making a point to note how far ahead of its time this concept really was: 'It's got some hard bark on it.' Based on King's 1979 dystopian novel, The Long Walk takes place in a fractured America where entertainment is a deadly sport. The event is simple but chilling: 50 teenage boys walk nonstop. Drop below three miles per hour, and you're dead. There's no resting, no stopping, only walking. The last survivor wins a prize of their choice. The film stars Cooper Hoffman ( Licorice Pizza ) and David Jonsson ( Alien: Romulus ), with Mark Hamill ( Star Wars ) stepping into the role of a relentless military figure. The cast also includes Tut Nyuot, Garrett Wareing ( Ransom Canyon ), Charlie Plummer ( Looking for Alaska ), Ben Wang ( Karate Kid: Legends ), Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, Josh Hamilton, and Judy Greer. In the trailer, Charlie Plummer's character delivers a haunting line: 'The only guarantee you have as a human is that you're going to die. And if you're lucky, you get to choose how you'll spend those last moments.' What follows is an unflinching look at the competition's brutality. Dead animals line the roadside. One boy collapses as he gets a cramp and can't keep walking, falling to the ground, soldiers closing in with rifles drawn before a gunshot echoes. Jonsson's Pete admits, 'I keep hoping that part will get easier,' to which Hoffman's Raymond replies, 'That's what I'm afraid of.' Then comes Hamill's Major, staring down the young competitors: 'I look at each and every one of you, and I see hope.' During the panel, Hamill opened up about channeling the film's imposing antagonist, pulling inspiration from his childhood on a naval base in Japan. 'I knew exactly who [my character] is because I saw him firsthand,' Hamill said, recalling officers forcing soldiers to push through exhaustion until they vomited, and then made them eat it. 'The premise of the film itself is so off-putting. I don't know if I could see this movie. Much less be in it, but what happened was I read JT's script and the novel and saw the real heart and soul of the movie — which is the experience of the Walkers in these extraordinary circumstances. And I was blown away.' The footage teases a growing bond, and rivalry, between Raymond and Pete as they are sharing this intense experience. 'This is my chance to change things,' Raymond says at one point, before Hoffman delivers the line: 'Every moment matters. Especially at the end.' Francis Lawrence ( The Hunger Games films) directed the adaptation from a script by JT Mollner, who promised to keep King's raw and terrifying tone intact. Lawrence also popped in via video message with Ben Wang, currently shooting Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The Long Walk hits theaters on September 12, 2025, making it the second Stephen King adaptation of the year following The Life of Chuck , which also features Hamill alongside Tom Hiddleston.

What Actually Happens in the Second ‘Devil Wears Prada' Book? We're So Glad You Asked
Before we begin, a disclaimer: My tolerance for trashy literature is quite high. I love an airport novel—the frothier the better—and my preferred vacation reading is the literary equivalent of Love Island. The point being: I am not a snob. I love a bad rom-com. I love anything a bit tacky and aughts-coded. A good montage scene set to Madonna, and I'm sold. All of which is probably why The Devil Wears Prada holds a specific and sizeable place in my heart. When I started working at British Vogue, people would ask—after giving my outfit a once over—'What's it like?' which roughly translated to, 'How Devil Wears Prada is it?' While I'm yet to spot a cerulean belt or a Harry Potter manuscript flying around the office (though there was a Manolo Blahnik gift bag kicking around the other day), I can't pretend the 2006 film didn't shape my career aspirations and hair color choices. And there have definitely been moments in my personal and professional life that have bordered on cosplay, e.g. the time I got hit by a car and went as black-eyed, red-haired, hobbling Emily for Halloween (sadly, no Hermès scarves in sight). Despite cranking up KT Tunstall's 'Suddenly I See' during moments of anguish, there's been a void in my life that only Andy, Miranda, and the gang could fill—and so I decided it was time to plug that Prada-shaped hole with the original book's creatively named follow-up: Revenge Wears Prada. The novel picks up a decade after Andy dramatically quit Runway after one too many trips around Paris in a town car. She's now the editor of a glossy bridal magazine and is married to Max Harrison, a vaguely Succession-adjacent publishing heir with outdoorsy hobbies and a sensitive side (he doesn't drink). Within a few chapters, I was bored to tears of the placeholder hunk that is Max, though at least the God-awful Jarlsberg-loving boyfriend from the first film had disappeared to Boston, taking his port wine reductions and unsupportive attitude with him.

This wild Pedro Pascal movie just got an HBO Max release date
HBO Max is adding new movies all the time, and next month, it's adding "Freaky Tales." Now, if you're like me, you've quite possibly not even heard of this movie. Which was surprising — it was a Sundance film, distributed by Lionsgate and stars a pair of actors I love in Pedro Pascal and Ben Mendelsohn. It even has a bunch of punks fighting Nazis! In short, I should have been all over this movie. But somehow it escaped my notice and most everyone else's, because it reportedly only brought in $400K at the box office. But those who have seen this wild comedy have loved it. It currently has an 89% "hot" rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, even though critics were a bit more muted in their praise. You'll get to judge for yourself on Friday, Aug. 8, when the movie hits HBO Max. Or, if you're someone who prefers linear HBO to the streaming service, it'll air at 8 p.m. ET the next day (Saturday, Aug. 9) on the premium cable channel. In the meantime, here's what "Freaky Tales" is all about and why this wild comedy needs to be added to your watchlist. The most important thing to know about "Freaky Tales" is that it doesn't follow a typical plot structure. Instead, there are four vignettes that are loosely interconnected, only really all coming together at the end. It's based on real events and real locations in 1987 Oakland, California. The first chapter, "Strength in Numbers: The Gilman Strikes Back," focuses on a pair of young punks, Tina (Ji-young Yoo) and Lucid (Jack Champion), who are at an Operation Ivy concert that comes under attack from Nazi punks. "Don't Fight the Feeling" is the next story, picking up at the same point as the start of the first chapter, but instead focuses on Barbie (Dominique Thorne) and Entice (Normani), who perform as the hip hop duo Danger Zone. They don't go to the Operation Ivy show, but instead are roped into performing with the rapper Too Short. "Born to Mack" is where Pedro finally arrives. He plays Clint, a career criminal who is looking to get out of the game. When he's asked to pull a job during a Warriors basketball game, that desire to leave crime behind is put to the test. Finally, there's "The Legend of Sleepy Floyd." This is where the story finally starts to come together. Sleepy Floyd (Jay Ellis) is a star for the Warriors, and it's his house that Clint is supposed to rob. But instead, "The Guy" (Mendelsohn), sends the Nazi punks to rob it and things go horribly wrong. As I mentioned earlier, audiences are loving this movie for the most part. Critics are a bit harsher on it, and after combing through the reviews from both parties, this seems to come down to critics judging its (admittedly) loosely connected chapters failing to come together properly in the end. Ultimately, if you want a wild comedy that doubles as an impressive period piece, then "Freaky Tales" seems like it's worth watching. It doesn't necessarily stick the landing narratively, but the acting of its loaded cast is sublime, and its recreation of 1987 Oakland has been masterfully done by all accounts. Even Deadline praised the period elements of the movie in its review, saying, "What does work for 'Freaky Tales' is the film's gritty visuals immediately immerse the audience in the look and feel of late-'80s Oakland."
