Used In Op Sindoor, Brazil 'Interested' In Akash Air Defence System Ahead Of PM Modi's Visit
Last Updated: Operation Sindoor was largely successful as India thwarted a series of aerial attacks from across the border using air defence systems like Akash among others Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit for the BRICS Summit, India on Monday said Brazil has expressed interest in the Akash air defence system that was recently deployed during Operation Sindoor. Operation Sindoor, the mission under which the Indian armed forces struck terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, was largely successful as India thwarted a series of aerial attacks from across the border using indigenous air defence systems like Akash among others. The ministry of external affairs (MEA), during a special briefing, outlined the key agendas during Modi's five-nation tour starting July 2 to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. It said India will hold discussions on defence cooperation with Brazil. 'There's going to be talk on defence cooperation, avenues for joint research and training… they are interested in secure communications system on battlefield, offshore patrol vessels, partnership for maintaining their Scorpene-class submarines, Akash air defence system, coastal surveillance system and Garuda artillery guns…" secretary (East) P Kumaran said. During his tour, the Prime Minister will hold meetings with leaders of Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Namibia to strengthen bilateral ties with the visit ending on July 9. He will be in Brazil from July 5 to 8 to attend the 17th BRICS Summit 2025 followed by a State Visit. WHAT DEFENCE SYSTEMS DID INDIA USE DURING OP SINDOOR? On the intervening night of May 7 and 8, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in northern and western India, including Awantipora, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankote, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) Grid and Air Defence systems. Air defence systems detect, track, and neutralise threats using a network of radars, control centres, artillery, and both aircraft- and ground-based missiles. On the morning of May 8, the armed forces targeted air defence radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. India used battle-proven air defence systems like the Pechora, OSA-AK and LLAD guns (low-level air defence guns), as well as indigenous systems such as the Akash, which demonstrated stellar performance. WHAT IS THE AKASH DEFENCE SYSTEM? AKASH is a short range surface-to-air missile system to protect vulnerable areas and vulnerable points from air attacks. It can simultaneously engage multiple targets in group mode or autonomous mode. It has built in electronic counter-counter measures (ECCM) features. The entire weapon system has been configured on mobile platforms. First Published: June 30, 2025, 18:20 IST
