Experience the Prophet's Journey: Saudi Arabia's Immersive Hijrah Route

Leaders4 days ago
Saudi Arabia prepares to welcome 300,000 global visitors this November for an unprecedented spiritual journey. The 'In the Prophet's Steps' initiative meticulously recreates Prophet Muhammed's (PBUH) historic Hijrah path from Makkah to Madinah.
Organized by the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), this ambitious project garnered over one million global registrations. Consequently, the GEA selected 300,000 participants for the inaugural season. GEA Chairman Turki Alasheikh stated that the overwhelming response reflects deep worldwide interest in this key Islamic history event. Modern Technology Meets Ancient Path
The project employs cutting-edge technology to reconstruct the full 470-kilometer Hijrah route. Significantly, visitors can walk 305 kilometers of this path, as they will traverse restored landscapes and historical sites following the Prophet's (PBUH) footsteps.
Furthermore, teams have meticulously rehabilitated forty-one landmarks along the route, with eight stations and five interactive hubs narrate pivotal migration moments. Additionally, a dedicated Migration Museum will significantly deepen visitor understanding.
The experience prioritizes visitor comfort alongside spiritual reflection. Strategically placed along the route are thirty restaurants and fifty shops, with the infrastructure capably hosts up to 12,000 visitors daily.
GEA Chairman Turki Alasheikh emphasized, 'This project clearly demonstrates our leadership's commitment to preserving Islamic heritage. It offers everyone a unique opportunity to explore Hijrah landmarks and reflect on its timeless lessons.' Global Reach and Future Ambitions
International interest, particularly from Indonesia, has been exceptionally strong. Accordingly, international rollouts are planned for Malaysia, Turkey, and India, as Saudi Arabia aims to welcome five million visitors annually by 2030.
Moreover, specially designed 4×4 vehicles will ensure safe and comfortable transport for visitors in the route that traverses rugged terrain. Crucially, innovative technology now reduces the journey to the Cave of Thawr – a vital Hijrah site – from a strenuous two-hour climb to just three minutes.
'In the Prophet's Steps' masterfully blends historical authenticity, immersive storytelling, and modern conveniences. This initiative offers a deeply moving and accessible experience of the Prophet's (PBUH) migration. It vividly illuminates the profound spiritual and human values of the Hijrah for people worldwide.
The 'In the Prophet's Steps' project aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which emphasizes preserving and promoting Islamic history.

Hajj a gateway to Saudi culture, says historian

Riyadh: Abdulrahman Al-Waqeesi, a professor and historian specializing in the scientific and cultural movement in the Hejaz, said that Hajj is an opportunity to discover Saudi Arabia's culture, arts, architecture and people — not just a religious destination. During a symposium at the Madinah Book Fair, Al-Waqeesi spoke about the lasting social impact pilgrims have on their communities, becoming ambassadors who share their religious and cultural experiences. He highlighted the Two Holy Mosques as historic centers of knowledge and cultural exchange, adding that Hajj has long inspired memoirs and writings that serve as key historical references, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday. Al-Waqeesi also pointed out the symbolic items pilgrims take home, reflecting Hejazi culture and expressing the depth of the Hajj experience. These details, he said, reinforce the Two Holy Mosques' status in the Islamic conscience. The professor praised the Kingdom's Vision 2030 initiatives for facilitating and expanding Hajj opportunities for Muslims worldwide.

Saudi Economy Grows 3.9% in Q2 on Broad Sector Gains

Saudi Arabia's economy grew by 3.9% in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period a year earlier, according to flash estimates released by the General Authority for Statistics. The non-oil sector, a key pillar of the kingdom's economic diversification drive, expanded by 4.7% year-on-year, underscoring continued progress in reducing reliance on hydrocarbons. Oil activities also posted solid gains, rising by 3.8% on an annual basis, reflecting the resilience of the energy sector despite global market uncertainties. Government activities grew modestly by 0.6% over the same period. Oil activities made the largest contribution to quarterly real GDP growth, adding 1.3 percentage points, followed by non-oil activities, which contributed 0.9 percentage points. Government activities and net taxes on products each trimmed growth by 0.1 percentage points. However, when measured annually, non-oil activities emerged as the main growth engine, contributing 2.7 percentage points to the overall GDP increase. Oil activities accounted for 0.9 points, while government activities and net taxes added 0.1 and 0.2 points, respectively. The figures highlight the resilience of the Saudi economy and its growing ability to generate momentum from multiple sources, as authorities push ahead with Vision 2030 reforms aimed at reducing dependence on oil revenues. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently revised up its growth forecast for Saudi Arabia, projecting the economy will expand by 3.6% in 2025 — 0.6 percentage points higher than its April estimate — buoyed by stronger oil receipts and accelerating non-oil activity. The Fund also raised its 2026 forecast to 3.9%, from a previous estimate of 3.7%.
