Ranchi: At least five people, including three women, were injured in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, when a marriage "mandap" turned into a battleground over the serving of food.
Police said the clash happened between two groups of people belonging to the bride's relatives. The incident happened at Muri Tungri village under the Silli police outpost, some 60km away from here. Police on Sunday said they had made a site visit on Saturday, took the injured persons to a private hospital and started a probe into the incident, but no FIR has been filed so far. They also said those injured are recuperating in the hospital. According to the preliminary findings of the police, guests at the marriage function clashed over the serving of food. The officer-in-charge of the outpost, Kundan Kumar, said, "The groom and his relatives had arrived at the bride's house from Phusro in Bermo sub-division of Bokaro district at about midnight, and the marriage ritual started normally. The bride's uncle and his friends, who had come from Ramgarh for the function, however, clashed with local guests over the serving of food."He said two groups of people belonging to the bride's side started attacking each other with sticks, belts, and some of them indulged in fisticuffs. Kumar also informed that the bridegroom's party stood at a safe distance and merely became spectators of the situation. When he visited the village on Saturday night to inquire about the incident, Kumar said no one was able to tell him clearly about what exactly started the clash, but they merely remembered something about disagreements over the serving."No one has lodged any complaint in this regard, and there are attempts to end the dispute through negotiations," Kumar said. After the violence ended, the marriage ceremony resumed, and the rituals were performed under a tense atmosphere, the police officer added.

UPSC debars candidate for three years for possession of incriminating material

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has debarred a candidate from appearing in all future examinations for a period of three years after the individual was found in possession of incriminating material during an examination, the Commission said on Friday (July 25, 2025). 'Recently, a candidate was found in possession of incriminating material in one of the UPSC examinations,' the Commission stated. In a post on LinkedIn, UPSC said the candidate was found guilty under Rule 12(1)(h) of the Examination Rules - 'being in possession of or using unfair means during the examination'. 'Accordingly, UPSC has taken stringent disciplinary action in line with standardisation of penalties by cancelling the candidature for the current year's examination and debarred the individual from appearing in all future examination(s)/selection(s) to be conducted by the Commission for a period of three years,' it added. He further said such measures are essential to preserve the sanctity of the selection process and ensure that merit remains the sole criterion for recruitment to government services. Commenting on the action, UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar said, 'UPSC is firmly committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and fairness in its examination processes. Any candidate found guilty of indulging in unfair means or misconduct during examinations faces strict disciplinary action as per rules, including debarment from future examinations, as the strictest action.' 'This is the sole reason why UPSC, for the last 100 years, has been an epitome of merit and a fair system, and candidates from any background can get selected purely on merit basis, as per the selection process,' Mr. Kumar added.

Ayodhya horror: Kin dump elderly woman on road in dead of night; she dies hours later

In a tragic incident, an elderly woman in Ayodhya died after she was allegedly abandoned by her kin late at night near the roadside in Kishundaspur locality, the Times of India reported on Friday. The report added that the elderly woman, who was abandoned to suffer in the cold, was spotted by the people lying unattended on Thursday morning in Ramnagari. The police personnel admitted the elderly woman to Ayodhya Medical College, however, she succumbed to her condition during the treatment. The entire incident of abandoning the elderly woman by her kin was captured on CCTV, which shows an e-rickshaw arriving at the spot and three individuals leaving the woman by the roadside. Meanwhile, the police are scanning the video and trying to identify the vehicle and people involved. On being asked who the people were who had abandoned the old woman and the reason she was left behind, SP City Chakrapni Tripathi said, as quoted by TOI, "We have obtained CCTV footage showing a man and two women abandoning her. Efforts are underway to trace them and determine the identity of the deceased. Strict action will be taken against the culprits once identification is confirmed and postmortem is completed." Following the incident, it has sparked widespread outrage and city residents have demanded strict punishment of the inhumane act, add the report. In another shocking incident, a 60-year-old man in Japan was arrested after police found his mother's dead body in her flat. Amazingly, the man had been there for 10 years. Takehisa Miyawaki said he did not report her death due to social phobia. The man has no job or permanent home. In May, the case came to light when a government worker in Kobe saw Miyawaki limping on the road. When asked about his identity and mother, Miyawaki stayed silent. This made the official suspicious, and he informed the police. In June, police went to the flat registered under Miyawaki's mother's name. They found piles of garbage. Later, they discovered a skeleton in the toilet.
