At least three people died and around 50 others were injured in the early morning stampede on Sunday. The incident occurred around 4 am, according to Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain, when hundreds of devotees had gathered to witness the annual chariot procession of Lord Jagannath and his siblings.
'When this incident happened, no one responded, neither the fire officials, nor the rescue team, nor the hospital team,' the man told news agency ANI. 'This is a pathetic incident that cannot be expressed.'
Officials said the chaos began when two trucks carrying materials for rituals entered a crowded stretch near the chariots, triggering panic and a stampede-like situation.
The deceased have been identified as Basanti Sahu from Bolagarh, and Premakant Mohanty and Pravati Das from Balipatna. Six of the injured remain in critical condition at a local hospital. Eyewitness recount Puri Rath Yatra stampede
Another eyewitness, Swadhin Kumar Panda, a resident of Puri, said there were several lapses in crowd management. 'I was there near the temple till 2–3 am last night, but the management was not good,' he told ANI.
'A new way was made for VIPs, and common people were asked to exit from a distance. People started exiting from the entrance itself, which increased the crowd,' he said.
Panda also criticised the traffic arrangements and claimed, 'The administration did not control the crowd properly. The biggest problem was the exit gate.'
'Many people died on the day of the Rath Yatra too, but the government and administration did not disclose it and said there were no casualties. Today, three people have died – two women, one man. The Odisha administration is responsible for this. There was no police, administration there at night,' news agency ANI quoted the man as saying. 3 dead due to suffocation
Odisha law minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Sunday said that the government is taking serious steps after the stampede at the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, which left three people dead and several others injured.
Speaking to ANI over the phone, Harichandan said, "It is an unfortunate incident. We are taking note of that. I spoke with the CM this morning. We are taking stringent action. DGP has been sent to the spot."
According to him, 'Three people have passed away because of suffocation in the huge gathering. Six to seven people are injured.'
The minister said he is on his way to Puri and is closely monitoring the situation. 'I am moving to Puri. I am monitoring the situation over the phone. We are trying our best to manage the crowd. Additional police have been deployed. The reasons for the incident are being investigated,' he added.
Harichandan also assured that the situation had stabilised. 'The situation is now under control and the people are having darshan,' he said.
DGP Y B Khurania and other senior officials visited the spot and are assessing the situation.
The Rath Yatra began on Saturday with the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra reaching the Shree Gundicha Temple — considered their aunt's home. The return journey, or Bahuda Yatra, is scheduled for July 5.

MP police move towards paperless system, shifting key ops to digital platforms, says DGP
1 2 3 4 Indore: Madhya Pradesh police is moving towards adopting a paperless system, with digitisation of critical processes already underway, said director general of police (DGP) Kailash Makwana on Sunday. While interacting with senior police officials from Indore police commissionerate and Indore range, the DGP said the state police is gradually transitioning key operations to digital platforms. The goal is to go completely paperless, ensuring faster, transparent, and more efficient policing, he told the officers. The meeting focused on improving crime control strategies, boosting operational effectiveness, and strengthening community-based policing. With cybercrime and drug-related offences on the rise, the DGP emphasised the need for law enforcement to evolve alongside these modern challenges. "Along with strict legal action, it's equally important to engage the community through awareness and outreach programmes. Public participation is vital in controlling emerging threats," said DGP Makwana. Officers were directed to align with the department's digital transformation roadmap and make greater use of technology in investigations, records management, and communication. The DGP also reviewed the performance of various districts under the range and acknowledged the role of officers working in sensitive areas. He interacted with the media after the meeting. When asked about the alleged delay in arresting Sonam Raghuvanshi, who was in Indore for several days evading arrest in the infamous Raja Raghuwanshi murder case, DGP Makwana pointed to the challenges of tracking individuals in large urban areas like Indore. "Many people own multiple houses, and even the landlords often don't know who is coming or staying at which property. No one keeps track. In such a large commissionerate, how can the police possibly know unless they receive specific input," he said. On rising cases of 'love jihad' in cities like Indore and Bhopal, he said special instructions have been issued to officers to remain vigilant. "The officials have been asked to stay in touch with hostel wardens and schools and colleges," he added. The DGP also spoke on internal reforms within the police department. He said officers, who were stationed at police stations for extended periods, were transferred to encourage fresh energy and efficiency. He said plans are afoot to increase police force strength and re-evaluate the jurisdiction of newly established police stations to ensure better service delivery. On the occasion, DGP Makwana also presented ISO certification mementos to Rajendra Nagar and Tejaji Nagar police stations, recognising improvements in their functioning.

3 dead, over 20 injured in stampede outside Gundicha Temple
Bhubaneswar: At a time when most were asleep, a small corner in Puri was awake to the sounds of cymbals and gongs and chants of 'Jai Jagannath'. As nearly 20,000 devotees jostled for space at 4 am for a glimpse of the sibling deities, a stampede broke out, killing three and leaving scores injured. The devotees had gathered for a darshan of the deities atop the chariots outside Gundicha Temple on Sunday, the third day of Rath Yatra. But the chants soon turned into cries of despair as devotees rushed in to have a closer look of the deities, triggering a stampede. Among the dead were Premakanta Mohanty (78), a retired state govt employee from Nayapalli area in Bhubaneswar, as well as Basanti Sahu (42) from Khurda district, and Prabhati Das (52) of Balianta in Bhubaneswar. Both the women were housewives. All three had travelled to Puri with family members to have a glimpse of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra atop the chariots before they were moved to Gundicha Temple. More than 20,000 devotees had pressed into a space meant for 5,000-6,000, raising serious question mark on the crowd management measures undertaken by the Puri administration. Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi reacted swiftly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Beyond Text Generation: An AI Tool That Helps You Write Better Grammarly Install Now Undo Terming the 'negligence' as 'unforgivable', Majhi transferred Puri district collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and SP Vinit Agrawal and suspended DCP-ranked officer Vishnu Prasad Pati and commandant Ajay Kumar Padhi for dereliction of duty. The CM, who had instructed the govt machinery to ensure an 'incident-free' Rath Yatra, also apologised to Jagannath devotees for the incident and ordered a high-level administrative inquiry, led by development commissioner Anu Garg. Majhi also announced compensation of Rs 25 lakh for families of each victim. According to eyewitnesses, the situation worsened when two trucks carrying wooden ladders for the chariots tried to enter the crowded area. "The narrow congregation site, combined with insufficient police presence and scattered palm log ladders near the chariots, resulted in the stampede," Chinmay Patra, an eyewitness, said. A state govt ministerial committee, which was recently formed to oversee Rath Yatra arrangements, visited Puri to assess the situation. The govt deputed Khurda district collector Chanchal Rana and STF DIG Pinak Mishra as Puri's new collector and SP in the middle of Rath Yatra festival, which will conclude on July 8 with Niladri Bije. The opposition BJD and Congress slammed the govt over the incident. Former chief minister Naveen Patnaik criticised the "abysmal failure of crowd management" in an X post, while Congress MP Rahul Gandhi stated that "no lapses in this responsibility are acceptable."
