Inside Ranking Commanders' Top Five Young Prospects for Stardom originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
There is a big difference between how the NFL handles its young prospects and other leagues like the NHL or MLB. Both baseball and hockey have minor leagues, developmental leagues, in which their young players can learn the game at their own pace.

The NFL doesn't afford itself or its prospects that luxury. In this league, either the young prospects show something almost immediately, or they don't end up playing at all.
And the next thing you know, they're in the UFL or the CFL. Or they become doctors or Uber drivers or lawyers or shoe salesmen.
In baseball and hockey, it's common for each team to have a ranking of its minor-legue prospects.
Let's do the same exercise here as we'll rank Washington's top prospects under the age of 25, similar to how baseball or hockey runs their rankings. ... with the idea being all about the Commanders' top five candidates for stardom.

5. Josh Conerly Washington's first-round pick from the 2025 draft is a tackle who should be the future anchor of the entire offensive line. The Oregon prospect is raw but has the potential to be very good, wherever he ends up playing.
4. Jer'Zhan Newton Newton was one of multiple second-round picks from the 2024 draft and is about to see a significant increase in playing time following the offseason departure of Jonathan Allen. His rank could increase with a big year ahead.
3. Quan Martin Martin has been an underrated player in Washington's secondary, but continues to improve as one of the brightest safeties in the game. Another year in coach Dan Quinn's scheme could do wonders.
2. Mike Sainristil Sainristil was another player who stood out in his rookie season with Washington. ... almost in a Jayden Daniels-level way. The Michigan product will only get better in a division full of receiving stars as he will take on their challenge and we bet win his share.

1. Jayden Daniels There isn't any other viable answer other than Daniels for the No. 1 slot. While he turns 25 in December, Washington's signal-caller is one of the bright young stars - yes, he's already there - in the league today.
So in Jayden's case, this is about more than an ascent toward "stardom.'' Let's call it "superstardom.''

Cody Bellinger's sparkling catch and throw save Yankees as they take finale against Mets

Aaron Judge hit his 33rd home run, left fielder Cody Bellinger started a pivotal double play and the New York Yankees stopped a six-game losing streak by beating the Mets 6-4 Sunday to avoid a weekend Subway Series sweep. Max Fried (11-2) improved to 9-1 in 12 starts after Yankees losses after Judge staked him to a 5-0 lead with a two-run homer in the fifth off Brandon Waddell, part of Judge's three-RBI day. After Judge's sacrifice fly restored a two-run lead in the seventh, Juan Soto hit a sinking drive that Bellinger scooped with a shoestring catch that had 30% possibility. Bellinger made a 89.9 mph throw to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt that doubled up Francisco Lindor, who didn't slide. That was the second of three double plays in consecutive innings by a Yankees defense that has been shaky of late. Hayden Senger grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth, and Judge followed with a tumbling catch on Starling Marte's liner. Goldschmidt turned an unassisted double play in the eighth, gloving Brett Baty's hard grounder, tagging Ronny Mauricio and stepping on first base. The Yankees, who tumbled from the AL East lead by losing 16 of 22 games, had matched their longest losing streak. They stopped the Mets' four-game winning streak. Austin Wells homered in the third off Zach Pop (0-1), who made his Mets debut. Francisco Lindor hit a two-run single in the fifth off Fried (11-2). Devin Williams pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected by plate umpire John Bacon after a pair of called strikes on Luis Torrens starting the inning, the first that appeared to be outside and the second that seemed low. The game ended when Lindor couldn't check his swing on a strikeout with Soto on deck. Mendoza was ejected for the second time this season, both in a nine-day span. KEY MOMENTS After Lindor's hit, Fried struck out Soto and retired Pete Alonso on a deep flyout. KEY STAT Judge has 11 first-pitch homers, equaling a career high. UP NEXT Yankees: Rookie Will Warren (5-4, 5.02 ERA) opposes visiting Seattle and RHP Logan Gilbert (2-2, 3.40) on Tuesday night. Mets: Clay Holmes (8-4, 2.99) faces rookie Brandon Young (0-3, 7.02 ERA) at Baltimore on Tuesday.

Michigan Wolverines, Sherrone Moore Suffer Major Recruiting Loss

Michigan Wolverines, Sherrone Moore Suffer Major Recruiting Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Michigan Wolverines and head coach Sherrone Moore are hopeful to take a big leap in the right direction during the upcoming 2025 college football season. Advertisement After finishing the 2024 campaign with an 8-5 record, including beating the eventual champion Ohio State Buckeyes in the final game of the regular season, the program appears to be back on track. Moore has done an excellent job of replacing Jim Harbaugh. He has continued recruiting well and has the Wolverines heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, Michigan suffered some bad recruiting news on Saturday. According to a report from college football insider Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, the Wolverines have lost the commitment of 2026 four-star cornerback Brody Jennings. He has reportedly flipped his commitment to the Miami Hurricanes. Advertisement "BREAKING: Four-Star CB Brody Jennings has flipped his commitment from Michigan to Miami, he tells me for @rivals," Fawcett wrote. "The 6'1 180 CB from Jacksonville, FL had been committed to the Wolverines since July 2024." According to Rivals, Jennings is the No. 29 ranked cornerback in the 2026 recruiting class. He is also the No. 294 ranked player in the nation and the No. 41 ranked player in the state of Florida. Moore has received commitments from quite a few top-tier players, although there is more work to be done. Losing out on Jennings is a tough break for the Wolverines. He has legitimate star potential at the college level. Unfortunately, it's a setback, but it's a setback that Michigan can bounce back from quickly. Yankees snap losing streak, hold on for 6-4 win over Mets in Subway Series finale

The Yankees snapped a six-game skid and held on to beat the Mets, 6-4, avoiding the sweep on Sunday in the finale of 2025's Subway Series. Here are the takeaways... -- Chris Devenski did his job as the Mets opener and pitched a scoreless first inning, allowing just a one-out single to Trent Grisham before getting Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton to fly out. The right-hander surprisingly came back out for the second inning and sent the Yanks down in order, including back-to-back strikeouts. Advertisement -- New Met Zach Pop made his team debut and came in for Devenski in the third inning, but it go as planned. He allowed a solo homer to Austin Wells on his second pitch as the Yankees took a 1-0 lead. Pop escaped the third without further damage and stayed in to pitch the fourth inning. The righty allowed a leadoff double to Stanton and found himself in a first-and-third situation after Cody Bellinger singled. Pop got Anthony Volpe to hit a grounder, but the Mets could only turn one as the run scored to push the Yanks' lead to 2-0. He allowed another single and was then replaced by Brandon Waddell with runners on the corners. Wells hit another hard grounder that the Mets couldn't turn two on, making it a 3-0 game. Waddell got Oswald Peraza to fly out and end the inning. Waddell stayed in to pitch the fifth and things fell apart fast. Paul Goldschmidt doubled and then Judge launched a two-run homer as the Yanks went up 5-0. -- Starling Marte dropped a surprise bunt to leadoff the bottom of the first inning and beat it out for a single. Yankees starter Max Fried got a bit upset during Francisco Lindor's at-bat, as he was called for a pitch clock violation with a 2-2 count and walked off the mound to argue with the home plate umpire, but no one was ejected. Marte stole second while Lindor struck out and then advanced to third on a wild pitch by Fried. The Mets failed to capitalize on the early scoring chance as Pete Alonso flied out. -- Fried kept the Mets bats quiet for most of the day, but found himself in a tough spot in the fifth inning. Jeff McNeil and Hayden Senger hit back-to-back one-out singles and Marte collected his third hit of the day to load the bases. Lindor delivered with the fourth straight hit against Fried on a single up the middle, scoring two and cutting the Yankee lead to 5-2. Fried escaped by striking out Juan Soto on a slider in the dirt and getting Alonso to fly out to right field. Advertisement The left-hander's day ended after plunking Brandon Nimmo to leadoff the sixth, as he tossed 98 pitches (61 strikes) and allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. -- Ronny Mauricio pinch-hit for Mark Vientos with Nimmo on first base and came through with a single. It was then Brett Baty's turn to pinch hit for Tyrone Taylor and he loaded the bases with another single. McNeil hit a dibbler that was misplayed by Jonathan Loáisiga, allowing the run to score and keeping the bases juiced. Senger grounded into a double play, but another run scored to cut the Yankee lead to 5-4. Loáisiga escaped by getting Marte to line out with some help from a sliding Judge in right field. -- The Yankees tacked on another in the top of the seventh on a Judge sacrifice fly, making it 6-4. Bellinger made the play of the day in the bottom half on a low catch in left field against Soto and was able to double-up Lindor retreating back to first base, helping Mark Leiter Jr. avoid potential trouble. -- Carlos Mendoza was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the bottom of the ninth inning. Home plate umpire John Bacon called two low pitches strikes against Luis Torrens, as both pitches were clearly outside the zone. Advertisement Game MVP: Aaron Judge The slugger hit HR No. 33 on the season with a two-run blast and picked up another RBI with a sacrifice fly. He's up to 74 RBI on the season. Honorable mention: Bellinger, for his scooping catch and throw to shut down a Mets comeback. Highlights What's next The Mets are off on Monday and then start a three-game series in Baltimore against the Orioles on Tuesday. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. on SNY. Clay Holmes (8-4, 2.99 ERA) is scheduled to start, while Brandon Young (0-3, 7.02 ERA) goes for the O's.
