Bengaluru, here's how you can soon buy Namma Metro tickets on multiple apps
Commuters using Namma Metro will soon be able to book tickets using a variety of mobility apps as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is set to enhance passenger convenience by integrating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
This means that metro commuters will be able to book tickets on apps like Tummoc, Rapido, and several other platforms. The initiative aims to simplify commuting by creating a smooth, all-in-one travel experience for metro passengers, according to officials.
End-to-end booking
'This new partnership will make it easier for commuters to plan their entire trip from booking an auto-rickshaw or cab to purchasing a BMTC bus pass and metro ticket using a single aggregator app. This initiative is part of a broader plan to encourage end-to-end journey booking, especially as public transport and last-mile connectivity play an increasingly vital role in urban mobility,' an official said.
The official further explained, 'We want to make sure commuters have a truly unified experience. Through the ONDC platform, which has collaborations with more than ten mobility apps, we are enabling people to plan and pay for all legs of their trip. Commuters can choose whichever app suits them best, ensuring they never have to switch between platforms.'
The official also noted that this digital transformation will help improve accessibility, reduce wait times, and encourage greater use of public transport options.
Other integrations
BMRCL has already partnered with a private technology solutions provider to integrate its ticketing services with these apps. Meanwhile, other partnerships for ticketing and smart card recharges are also making metro travel more accessible. WhatsApp, for example, has been offering QR code-based metro ticketing since November 2022. However, this service does not cover first- and last-mile connections like auto-rickshaws and buses.
BMRCL also collaborates with Paytm for QR-code-based tickets and Amazon Pay for smart card top-ups, in addition to its own Namma Metro app for direct recharges.
Timely implementation
Commuters are looking forward to the initiative. 'This new booking option may be a game-changer for me if it is implemented properly,' said Rahul Sharma, a regular Metro commuter from Jalahalli.
'Being able to plan my entire trip from my auto ride to my bus pass and Metro ticket all in one app will save me a lot of time and hassle every day. But I really hope BMRCL ensures this launches soon. Many times, good initiatives like this get delayed, and with so many of us using multiple modes of transport every day, it's important this becomes available on time,' he added.

"This kind of daylight robbery is unpardonable and strict action should be taken," the letter states. Reddy cited ride-hailing apps as the reason for exorbitant fares being charged. "A majority of auto drivers have attached their vehicles with ride-hailing apps. These apps, instead of following fare rules of the govt, are charging higher auto fares and other fees," he said, adding: "Enforcement staff will identify irregularities and take action. No auto drivers should collect more fare from passenger." On the trending hashtag, the minister said, "We've acted against bike-taxi operations as per the high court order. On social media, people do make comments about the decision taken by authorities, I don't have much to say about that. Earlier, bike-taxi operations were illegally operated. Usually, a customer pays the tip voluntarily after the delivery of the service; this is the custom everybody is accustomed to. What is happening here in the name of innovation is that aggregators are trying to become cheeky and creative. When I spoke to the drivers, they were unaware that aggregators are asking for the tip in their name. Union minister Pralhad Joshi has referred the case of advancing tipping to central consumer protection authority (CCPA) for investigation." He added aggregators not complying with the high court orders on charging fares for mobile-app-based services is a matter of concern.

Gujarat High Court takes action against illegal ride-hailing licences for private cars
The Gujarat high court has issued a notice to state authorities concerned over a petition filed by auto rickshaw drivers' unions taking exception to the licences issued to private cars that are not registered as taxis but are used for ride-hailing by aggregators in the city. The Auto Riksha Chalak Welfare Association and Smart City Auto Drivers' Union have sought the court's directions to the transport authorities and the city's regional transport officer not to issue licences to those private vehicles that are not registered as transport vehicles but are used by aggregators like Ola , Uber , Rapido , and Jugnu. The unions have contended that Section 93 of the Motor Vehicles Act stipulates that the issuance of a licence to ply a vehicle as a taxi requires the vehicle's registration as a transport vehicle. However, authorities grant licences to aggregators to run unregistered transport vehicles as well. They have urged the HC to direct the authorities "to restrict the grant of licences for use of non-transport vehicles and further restrict the use of non-transport vehicles in the city of Ahmedabad by following the procedure laid down in the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules." The petitioners have contended that allowing such private vehicles to ply on city roads as taxis adds to pollution and traffic problems. In 2020, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued guidelines for the issuance of licences to aggregators. The state govt instructed the commissioner of transport to disallow non-transport vehicles by aggregators on April 16, 2021, and the city's RTO issued a press note to this effect on Sept 22, 2023, stating that carrying passengers in non-transport vehicles is illegal. The RTO issued a show cause notice to Rapido on Jan 4 and suspended its licence for 30 days for violation of this rule.
