Everything sets up for this former UNC star to thrive in his seventh NBA season.

NBA free agency is off to a wild start, headlined by moves like Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, but one of the most recent moves involves former UNC basketball standout Cameron Johnson.
Transferring to North Carolina ahead of the 2017-2018 college basketball season, Johnson played two years in Chapel Hill. After a career-best fifth year during the Tar Heels' 2018-2019 campaign, in which Johnson averaged career-highs across nearly every statistic, the Minnesota Timberwolves took him 11th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Minnesota then traded Johnson to the Phoenix Suns, where he played until 2022. Johnson was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in February 2023, then traded again to the Denver Nuggets two years later – on June 30.
Johnson is playing for his third team in seven seasons, but Denver is the best fit of Johnson's successful NBA career. Johnson goes from an NBA team that hasn't won a playoff game since 2021, to one of the League's best teams which won the 2023 NBA Finals.
Per a conversation with Senior NBA Insider Michael Scotto, Johnson said he's "Excited to compete for a championship. It's a new beginning."
Johnson joins a starting lineup that includes 2023 MVP Nikola Jokić, former Arizona Wildcats star Aaron Gordon, Kentucky standout Jamal Murray and Christian Braun, who helped Kansas come back to beat UNC in the 2022 National Championship.
The greatest assets Johnson brings to Denver are his perimeter shooting and ability to play anywhere on the floor.
Johnson is a career 39.2 percent shooter from deep, improving an already solid-shooting Nuggets team which shot 37.6% on regular-season 3-pointers – but struggled more at 34.7% in the postseason.
Johnson is officially listed as 6'8", which makes him an extremely versatile player for Denver. Though he primarily plays as a small forward, Johnson can also play as a tall two, power forward, undersized center or even run the point.

Wizards HC Explains What Drew Them To Texas Star Tre Johnson

Wizards HC Explains What Drew Them To Texas Star Tre Johnson originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While the Washington Wizards did not get to pick in the top five of the 2025 NBA draft, they still came out of the draft with a star. Former Texas star Tre Johnson was selected by the Wizards with the sixth pick in the draft. He will be expected to help the team after they went 18-64 last season and finished second last in the league. Advertisement On Thursday, head coach Brian Keefe shared his thoughts on why they chose to pick Tre Johnson. "Really thrilled to add Tre to our group, to our organization," Keefe said. "First of all a guy who loves basketball, who loves his craft, who is a gym rat, who works. From all that work is a guy who's obviously his shooting numbers, how he shoots the ball. A little more than that, too, is he's an underrated playmaker seeing the game. "But it's really his pursuit of his craft was really drawn us, how he's really intentional about how he wants to be and how he gets better. Those are the things that stood out about Tre. We're really excited to have him." Tre Johnson stands with NBA commissioner Adam Silver after being selected as the sixth pick by the Washington Penner-Imagn Images Tre Johnson played one season in college before declaring for the NBA draft. In his freshman year at Texas, he averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Sam Presti impressed with Jalen Williams gutting out wrist injury through playoffs

During your average morning shootaround, Jalen Williams had a quote that stuck with my mind. Hiding the wrapping on his wrist, the 24-year-old was asked how it felt. He sports black tape on it throughout the playoffs. It was pretty obvious he was playing through some sorta ailment. Williams snipped back at the reporter. He asked how their wrist was. That also stuck out to Sam Presti. Given several chances to admit that he played through a torn ligament in his wrist throughout the Oklahoma City Thunder's playoff journey to an NBA championship, he kept quiet. Only after champagne was popped and confetti littered downtown OKC in the post-parade scene did Presti let the public know about Williams' wrist injury. You knew something was up. He yelled at his shooting hand after he hit a big-time 3-pointer in a critical Game 5 win over the Denver Nuggets in their Round 2 series victory. Despite having the injury card in his hand, Williams never slammed it on the table. He kept it a secret. Or as secretive as he possibly could. That impressed Presti. Usually, if somebody is playing hurt, you'd hear about it. Ask Luka Doncic's superfans. Or Nuggets fans who'll let you know they were the first injured team in NBA history that didn't have anybody miss a game in their playoff matchup against OKC. "But the part that I am most impressed with is in our modern era, when someone has a poor performance or they're not playing to their capability in a game and there's a lot of attention on it, you often see a little birdie make sure that everybody knows that the player is not 100 percent," Presti said about Williams. "Never happened with this guy. Not one time." Williams wrote himself into Thunder lore. He entered the playoffs as a questionable second-best player on a title contender to a no-doubt good-enough second-best player on a title winner. A 40-point Game 5 explosion in the NBA Finals quickly blossomed into Gen Z Scottie Pippen comparisons. "He powered through. He showed incredible mental endurance and security in himself, and I've said this many times: The best players are secure players," Presti said. "I really thought it was pretty impressive that he just kept moving along with no excuses and obviously played his best basketball down the stretch of the season." Now, Williams is in line for a Cloud 9 offseason. He'll likely get a new deal signed soon, as he's eligible for a contract extension. He completely rewrote how people talk about him. And now he can run as many online victory laps as he wants while he recovers from wrist surgery and awaits his championship ring.

NBA Fans Bracing for Russell Westbrook's Retirement After New Report

NBA Fans Bracing for Russell Westbrook's Retirement After New Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. NBA free agent Russell Westbrook is looking for a new team. Spending last season with the Denver Nuggets, the nine-time All-Star averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 75 games (36 starts). Advertisement Westbrook declined his player option for the 2025-26 season, which made him a free agent. While a return to Denver seemed to initially be on the table, the Nuggets have since agreed to deals with Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown to round out their bench backcourt, leaving little room for Westbrook. Now 36 years old, Westbrook is nearly a decade removed from his 2017 MVP season, but remains a high-impact player. In his 36 starts last season, he averaged 15.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.0 assists. Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook (4)© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Early in free agency, there were reports that the New York Knicks and Sacramento Kings had interest in Westbrook. The Knicks buzz wore off quickly, but Sacramento continued being floated as a realistic destination. Advertisement A native of Los Angeles, Westbrook has played for both the Lakers and Clippers in his 17-year NBA career. Joining Sacramento would move him back to California and closer to home. That possibility was seemingly removed on Tuesday, as NBA insider Chris Haynes reported the Kings' inability to find a landing spot for Malik Monk has decreased the likelihood of Westbrook joining Sacramento (h/t NBCS Bay Area). With New York and Sacramento seemingly crossed off the list, fans are beginning to brace for Westbrook's potential retirement from the NBA. "It's time to retire unfortunately," said one. "It's a disappointing end to Westbrook's career," one added. Advertisement "he's bout to be out to the Taiwan league soon," said another. "Dawg we ain't gon be on a team at this rate," one wrote. It is important to note that Westbrook himself indicated in an Instagram post he intends to play an 18th NBA season. That said, there was another report on Thursday that has even more fans fearing retirement. Speaking on a Bleacher Report stream, NBA insider Jake Fischer said Sacramento and New York were the only known teams showing interest in Westbrook. If they are both now off the table, fans do not know where the nine-time All-Star could end up. "Damn Westbrook going out like Dwight Howard,John Wall & Demarcus Cousins," said one. Advertisement "Is Russ just done in the league?" one asked. "Nobody talks about it but it's almost time for Westbrook to retire fr," said another. "Russ really out the league now isn't he?" one asked.
