Projected lottery pick Carter Bryant reveals his most NBA-ready traits

USA Today4 days ago

Carter Bryant is highly touted entering the 2025 NBA draft, and the former Arizona standout believes he has several qualities that will enable him to make an impact at the next level.
Bryant helped the Wildcats to the Sweet 16, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27.
The 6-foot-7 forward is considered a possible lottery pick on Wednesday because of scoring potential, playmaking ability and size. He believes he brings another key characteristic.
"I would say being able to defend multiple positions, along with being able to shoot the basketball," Bryant said on Tuesday. "I think (those are) two things the NBA will forever need, no matter if you're an 18th-year player or you're in your first year of playing basketball at that level. I think those are two things that translate immediately."
Bryant is an intriguing prospect for teams thanks to his ability on both ends of the court and 6-foot, 11 3/4-inch wingspan. He also proved to be a reliable floor spacer after connecting on at least two 3-pointers in 12 games with the Wildcats.
The 19-year-old came off the bench for much of the season, becoming a key contributor in the Wildcats' second unit. He showcased his defensive versatility in 19.3 minutes per game and emerged as a ferocious dunker throughout the season.
Bryant, who worked out with five teams, also believes his passing is an underrated part of his game that should translate to the next level. On the eve of the draft, Bryant is eager to find his next team and get to work with his new teammates.
"I always say it, but basketball is so unique because it is something you're always working toward in terms of perfection and being great at some things," Bryant said. "You're going to work your ass off every day and you may never be able to obtain it so that has been my mentality toward everything."

How to watch Aces at Mercury: Western Conference clash puts A'ja Wilson vs. sizzling Phoenix

Two of the WNBA's best bigs go at it on Sunday, with Satou Sabally and the white-hot Phoenix Mercury hosting A'ja Wilson and her Las Vegas Aces. Phoenix has been one of the surprise competitors of this nascent 2025 season, while Vegas looks uncharacteristically labored so far. How to watch Las Vegas Aces at Phoenix Mercury Venue: PHX Arena — Phoenix Advertisement Time: 6 p.m. ET, Sunday TV: NBA TV (national), Arizona's Family 3TV and Vegas 34 (regional) Streaming: Fubo (try for free) Watching in person? Get tickets on StubHub. It's not all bad for the Aces. Wilson recently surpassed 5,000 total points, and did so in fewer games than anyone in league history. Elsewhere, Jackie Young has bumped up to the best scoring average in her seven pro seasons, and Chelsea Gray is still efficient behind the arc on career-high volume (37.3 percent, 5.0 attempts per contest). Becky Hammon's group has the fewest fouls in the W and enjoys a positive free-throw differential. And … that's about it. Advertisement Across the past six seasons, the dynastic Aces have two championships, a third Finals appearance and three semifinal finishes. They've been a surefire staple for this current era of women's hoops. Yet these Aces arrive in the desert with a paltry 7-8 record, ranking ninth out of 13 teams in points for and points against. They're also ninth in net rating, spoiling six consecutive years of top-four marks there. Kiah Stokes has been a non-factor as the fifth starter, and the entire bench rotation is shooting below 40 percent. Six-time All-Star and 2023 scoring champ Jewell Loyd was supposed to slide right in as Kelsey Plum's replacement. She's maintained her assist-to-turnover ratio and is still on point from long distance (41.7 percent in her first 15 Vegas games), but her 2-point struggles are almost hard to process (35.3 percent, worst among all regular 2025 starters). Phoenix, meanwhile, has been an all-out challenge for the rest of the sport. The Mercury have won six in a row behind brisk pacing, shoot-at-will tempo and disciplined defense. They've wholly dominated turnover differentials, leading all teams in takeaways, and four of their players crack the top 20 in defensive rating. The offense funnels into Sabally. The German-American big is up to a career-high 19.6 points per game while playing out-of-her-mind defense down low. The engine runs through Alyssa Thomas, the league's leading initiator at 9.5 assists per game. It's not often that an established 12-year veteran with multiple All-WNBA nods improves her output, but Thomas has career-best numbers in assists and field goal percentage. Advertisement Sabally had only played with Dallas before joining Phoenix in the offseason. Thomas did 11 years in Connecticut before her free agency move. Much props are in order for second-year head coach Nate Tibbetts and GM Nick U'Ren. With Kahleah Copper reintegrated from her knee injury, the Mercury are harboring real title aspirations in their first staging without Diana Taurasi or Brittney Griner. Best player to wear both jerseys: Danielle Robinson. She was a three-time All-Star with the San Antonio Silver Stars, the previous iteration of the Aces franchise, before a respectable 2017 season with Phoenix. Robinson then got to don the Vegas threads in 2020, when she was a crucial bench guard for the team's Finals run. Updated WNBA odds The Athletic This article originally appeared in The Athletic. WATCH: Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje reacts to his NBA Draft selection

What a moment for him Former Wisconsin Basketball star John Tonje witnessed his NBA dreams come true on Thursday evening. Surrounded by friends and family, Tonje looked on as NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum announced the Utah Jazz's selection with the 53rd pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. Immediately afterwards, his loved ones erupted in joy, eliciting a giant smile from Tonje. Here's the moment Tonje realized his NBA aspirations morphed into a reality: Tonje's journey is arguably one of the more memorable of any recent player to represent the Badgers. After playing just eight games before being sidelined for the entire 2023-24 season at Missouri due to injury, Tonje burst onto the scene as Wisconsin's most prolific offensive option. The 6-foot-5 wing began the season with a 41-point barrage against No. 9 Arizona -- a performance that included a baffling 21 made free throws -- to set the tone for what Wisconsin would accomplish during the 2024-25 slate. Tonje would then secure 2024 Greenbrier Tip-Off Tournament MVP nods with strong outputs in wins over UCF at Pittsburgh in UW's mid-November tournament, roughly three months before dropping 32 points in a signature triumph over No. 7 Purdue on the road. In the postseason, Tonje also registered 32 points against No. 7 Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship semifinal and 37 tallies against BYU in the Badgers' NCAA Tournament round of 32 loss. At the season's end, he was named a 2025 Second Team All-American, 2025 Naismith Player of the Year Semifinalist and member of the 2025 All-Big Ten first team. The three-level scorer will now join former Rutgers star Ace Bailey and Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr., who pocketed an NCAA title with the Gators in April, in Salt Lake City. The 2024-25 iteration of Utah went 17-65, the worst record in the entire NBA. Tonje's professional journey will begin in Utah's summer league action from July 5-7. 5 NBA Players Who Could Be Traded This Summer

Mandatory Credit: Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports With the 2025 NBA season behind us, the trade market has already exploded with big names like Kevin Durant and Jrue Holiday heading to new teams. Here are 5 big-time players who could be next in line to hit the trade block. Check Out: 50 Best NBA players right now 1. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks Credit: Benny Sieu-Imagn Images The best player left on the trade market by far, trade rumors about the 30-year-old, two-time MVP have been circulating for a while. Given the Milwaukee Bucks' lack of a legitimate young core and recent playoff underperformances, it's becoming increasingly likely that Giannis will want in on a team that's more competitive for a championship push. Lauri Markkanen – Jazz Credit: Chris Nicoll-Imagn Images The Utah Jazz are rebuilding, and after another disappointing lottery result, they are nowhere near ready to compete for playoff contention. If the Jazz want to offload Markkanen's expensive contract and give the lottery one last try for a top-four pick, they should trade Lauri. 3. Trae Young – Hawks Credit: Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images Trae Young's contract runs through the 2026 season, and he will be eligible for a contract extension this offseason, but not a supermax extension. If he decides to hold out until free agency, there is a good chance the Atlanta Hawks may trade the 26-year-old star. 4. Jaren Jackson Jr. – Grizzlies Credit: Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Jackson Jr. is in the same situation as Young. With the end of his contract in sight, he could easily sign an extension with the Memphis Grizzlies. But that's only if Jaren wants to stay in Memphis. He just as easily can hold out and force the Grizzlies to trade him. Jaylen Brown – Celtics Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images The Boston Celtics have already traded two significant contributors to their 2024 NBA Championship in Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. It would be foolish to think Brown isn't also on the table, as given Boston's immense payroll, two supermax contracts with Brown and Tatum just aren't sustainable.
