TikTok given three-month deadline to align with Egyptian content standards: MP - Society

TikTok has been given a three-month deadline to adjust its content to align with Egyptian social and moral standards, according to MP Ahmed Badawi, a member of the House of Representatives' Telecommunications Committee. Speaking in a phone interview on Alaamat Istifham on Al-Shams TV, Badawi said the deadline was set following a high-level meeting last month between the CEO of TikTok Egypt and North Africa, the head of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), and members of the parliamentary committee. During the meeting, TikTok pledged to revise its content moderation policies to better reflect Egypt's cultural norms and values. Badawi stressed that while Egyptian authorities retain the legal right to ban any app that violates national laws, he believes stricter regulation and targeted legislation are more effective than outright bans. He said the solution is not to block these platforms, but to enforce standards that reflect Egypt's social fabric. He added that the committee is actively monitoring TikTok content and is prepared to intervene if violations persist. Some types of content, he confirmed, have already been restricted. The Telecommunications and Information Technology Committee is currently exploring legal frameworks to regulate digital platforms, aiming to strike a balance between safeguarding freedom of expression and upholding public morality. The development comes amid growing public pressure to ban the Chinese-owned platform, with critics accusing TikTok of spreading content that 'violates societal values' and 'defames the reputation of Egyptian women.' In the past 72 hours, at least six prominent TikTok creators—including five women—have been arrested following legal complaints filed by private lawyers. The complaints name around 40 TikTok users, accusing them of charges ranging from spreading false information and violating public decency laws to undermining social norms. The controversy escalated after a viral video surfaced of a TikToker claiming to be the secret daughter of the late President Hosni Mubarak and a former pop singer. She alleged the existence of a human organ trafficking network operating in Egypt, implicating several social media personalities and actors. One of the actresses named in the video filed a formal complaint, leading to the TikToker's arrest on charges of spreading false news and defamation. According to data published by Statista in early 2024, TikTok has an estimated 32.9 million adult users in Egypt—roughly 47 percent of the country's population aged 18 and over. Egyptians abroad cast final ballots in 2025 Senate elections

Egyptians living abroad cast their final votes on Saturday in the 2025 Senate elections, marking the second and final day of overseas polling. Due to time zone differences, the Egyptian Embassy in New Zealand was the first to close its polls, while the last polling station—located in Los Angeles—will conclude voting later in the day. The two-day overseas voting process, which began Friday, was conducted across 136 polling stations housed within Egyptian embassies and consulates in 117 countries. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty inaugurated the voting process abroad by casting his ballot at the Egyptian embassy in Washington, D.C., early Friday. Later that day, officials from the National Election Authority (NEA) held video calls with several Egyptian ambassadors and consuls worldwide. Many reported a strong turnout and high enthusiasm among expatriate voters. In the lead-up to the vote, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held preparatory meetings with NEA officials and heads of Egyptian diplomatic missions to coordinate logistics and ensure smooth operations. Discussions focused on streamlining procedures and making polling stations easily accessible to Egyptian citizens abroad. A central operations room was established to monitor the vote continuously, respond to logistical challenges, and maintain oversight of the electoral process. Domestically, voting is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday (4–5 August), according to the NEA's official timeline. Results from the first round are expected to be announced on 12 August. If no clear outcome emerges, a runoff will be held both inside and outside Egypt. The Senate, Egypt's upper chamber of parliament, serves in a consultative capacity, with legislative authority residing in the House of Representatives. The 300-member Senate is composed of three equal parts: one-third elected via individual candidacy, one-third through closed party lists, and one-third appointed by the president. Women must hold at least 10 percent of the seats. Members serve five-year terms. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Hundreds of Volunteers at the Abu El-Enein Foundation Participate in 11th Convoy to Gaza

Rana Atef As part of Egypt's ongoing humanitarian support to the Palestinian people, the Abu El-Enein Foundation for Social and Cultural Work continues its intensive work to launch the 11th relief convoy to Gaza. This effort falls under the alliance of the National Alliance for Civil and Developmental Work, with the participation of hundreds of volunteers who work hard. The foundation's warehouses are witnessing evolved activity, as volunteers work to pack, wrap, and sort the aid supplies according to a carefully planned system that ensures urgent humanitarian needs are delivered to those who need them most inside Gaza. The convoy includes trucks loaded with dry food packages and essential relief materials intended to meet the needs of Palestinian families affected by ongoing aggression and blockade. The foundation emphasized that this convoy is a continuation of its active participation in relief efforts since the beginning of the crisis, reaffirming its national and humanitarian commitment and its dedication to being at the forefront of Egyptian civil society efforts in supporting the Palestinian people. Active coordination for the convoy's launch is being conducted under the direct guidance and real-time follow-up of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Foundation, MP Mohamed Abu El-Enein, along with Vice Chair of the Board, Somaya Abu El-Enein. All stages of the process are being closely reviewed to ensure the highest levels of efficiency, speed, and precision. It is worth noting that Egypt has sent more than 35,000 humanitarian aid trucks through the Rafah crossing since last October, carrying over 130,000 tons of food, medicine, and logistical support—making it one of the largest ongoing regional relief operations to date. The Abu El-Enein Foundation affirms that Convoy No. 11, launched by the National Civil and Developmental Alliance and with the Foundation's participation, represents a continuation of an integrated path of giving and solidarity that unites the state, its institutions, and civil society—embodying Egypt's genuine solidarity with the Palestinian people. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
