Teen hands mum's jewellery worth RM140,000 to scammers
Besut deputy police chief Sani Salleh said the 18-year-old lodged a report on July 12 claiming she had been duped by an unknown person. (AFP pic) PETALING JAYA : A teenager in Jertih, Terengganu, handed over her mother's jewellery worth RM140,000 to an unknown person after being deceived by members of a phone scam syndicate. Besut deputy police chief Sani Salleh said the 18-year-old, who is awaiting admission to an institution of higher learning, lodged a report on July 12 claiming she had been duped by an unknown person. 'The teenager received phone calls from three people posing as representatives from Touch 'n Go's headquarters and a police officer from the Perak police headquarters on July 1. 'They claimed certain parties had misused her particulars. They also alleged she was involved in fraud and money laundering cases,' Bernama reported him as saying. Sani said the victim, out of fear, handed over her mother's jewellery to the suspect at a meeting in a supermarket in Jertih town on July 2. He said the suspect promised to return the jewellery on the same day, but later told the teenager the jewellery had been kept by the police's forensics unit for further investigation. 'The teenager was then told she would have to pay RM28,000 to retrieve the jewellery. She lodged a police report upon realising she had been duped,' he said. Police arrested a 37-year-old woman in Kuala Besut yesterday and remanded her for four days until Friday to assist in investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
