So, Why is Cate Blanchett in ‘Squid Game' Season 3?
The actress could be seen wearing a suit as she played ddakji with a stranger, just like the The Recruiter does when selecting players for the brutal games.
The 56-year-old Hollywood star's cameo in the Korean thriller had viewers completely thrown as they took to X (formerly Twitter).
"WDYM Cate Blanchett is in Squid Game s3?" one viewer wrote in all caps.
"Seeing Cate Blanchett in Squid Game as The Recruiter is the best thing I ever witnessed," another said.
Cate Blanchett in Squid Game S3 was not on my 2025 Bucket List, but here the f**k we are," a third wrote.
So, why exactly is Cate Blanchett in the final installment of Squid Game? Here's everything you need to know.
Speaking about his reason to cast Cate Blanchett, the show's director Hwang Dong-hyul explained: "We thought having a woman as a Recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing."
"And as for why Cate Blanchett, she's just the best, with unmatched charisma. Who doesn't love her? So we were very happy to have her appear. We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just one or two words, which is exactly what she did."
Hwang continued: "If Gong Yoo is the Korean Recruiter, I thought she would be the perfect fit as the American Recruiter, bringing a short but gripping and impactful ending to the story."
Following the final round of games, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hu) finds himself in a car in Downtown Los Angeles. While stopped at a light, he hears some familiar sounds of two ddakji tiles hitting ground, followed by a sharp slap. He rolls down the window to see a suited Cate Blanchett playing ddakji with a man. Blanchett looks up and exchanges a knowing glance with the Front Man, before the car pulls away.
"During the shoot, she reminded me of what true talent looks like. Even with just a few looks and lines, her performance was mesmerizing," Hwang added. "She was amazing at playing ddakji. I believe she successfully flipped the ddakji with her first try, and we were able to get that one long take right away."
Last year, it was reported that director David Fincher, who is behind Netflix's House of Cards, was working on an American version of Squid Game.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk also confirmed to TheWrap: "Season three is not going to be the end of the Squid Game universe" and Lee Jung-jae, who portrays Seong Gi-hun, expressed his excitement over Fincher's adaption, telling Complex: "I'm looking forward to it so much, I can't wait to see it and I have high expectations."
Well if Cate's in it, we're sold!

'Jurassic World Rebirth,' 'The Old Guard 2' — Movie new releases to see or skip this weekend in Canada — streaming and in theatres
It's you're an action movie lover, there's a lot for you to see this weekend with the release of Prime Video's Heads of State with John Cena, Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra, and the theatrical release of Jurassic World Rebirth with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali and Rupert Friend. Additionally, The Old Guard 2 was released on Netflix this week, with Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman. But while there's so much newness in the action genre, much of it didn't land as well as you may have hoped. That being said, on the other side of the genre spectrum, Eva Victor's feature debut Sorry, Baby is a clear hit of the Baby is certainly my pick of the week if you're going to see a newly released movie. Eva Victor's film is an impressive debut feature that's incredibly thoughtful, endearing and funny, and Victor's voice feels unique. While it may be tempting to call this a film about trauma, it's really about healing after violence, something that's often left out in films with similar subject matter. Victor also injects so much humour into the story in a way that only works when the filmmaker has impressive attention to detail with fully developed and nuanced characters. This is already one of my favourite movies of the year so far. The biggest issue with Jurassic World Rebirth is that it's exactly what you expect, but that means it lacks excitement. Ultimately, it's just boring. But much of it comes down to a continuation of a franchise that's quite tired, and needs a big swing to really reinvigorate these stories. That's not what you're getting with Jurassic World Rebirth. It's a movie that just falls into the "meh" descriptor. If you're a particular fan of the franchise or the actors, you can have a good time with this one, but otherwise it's two hours and 13 minutes of predictability. The cast does the best they can with the story, but you can't escape the fact that the magic of this franchise has diminished over the years. There are two things that make Heads of State watchable. Firstly, the chemistry between John Cena and Idris Elba, who were also castmates on The Suicide Squad, and one sequence with Jack Quaid that is incredibly entertaining in its goofiness. Other than those elements, the film is holding on by a thin string with dialogue that will make you roll your eyes, and CGI that looks odd at times. But it's your typical mainstream action-comedy, so you know what to expect. The movie may star Elba, but don't expect this to be The Wire. Let's get the obvious out of the way, the story in The Old Guard 2 is far less enticing than what we got in the first film. And when that's your starting point, it's a tough uphill battle to try to crawl out from a stunted script. The story lacks the fun from the first movie, with no real stakes. Of course, Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman in an action movie together is going to make you want to hit play, they're both absolute powerhouses in the genre. But that being said, you'll be left wishing they had more substance to work with. Victoria Mahoney certainly tries to use the film's action sequences as effective storytelling devices in the evolution of this narrative, leaning into as much fun and poignancy as she can, but the expansion of this story just isn't on any solid ground.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' Season 2 Announced at Anime Expo 2025 With New Director, New Storyline, and a Whole Lot More Blood
Night City is calling once again. During Anime Expo 2025, Netflix and CD Projekt Red officially announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 — a brand-new installment of the acclaimed anime series set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Revealed during the 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators' panel, the new season will feature 'an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.' Bartosz Sztybor, story writer and producer of the original series, confirmed the news alongside voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez), host Joey 'The Anime Man' Bizinger, and Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi. During the panel, fans were treated to exclusive reveals of the official Season 2 logo and poster artwork, according to The Verge. 'David's story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City,' Sztybor said. 'And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before.' Taking the reins this season is Kai Ikarashi, who directed Season 1's standout episode 'Girl on Fire.' Ikarashi was formally introduced as the new director in a video message shown during the panel, where he also debuted a 'Director's Voice' video, offering a glimpse into his creative vision for the next chapter. The new 10-episode standalone story is being described as 'sadder,' 'darker,' and 'more bloody,' according to Sztybor, who didn't hold back during the Trigger Studio panel: 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I'm a bit happy.' He added, 'It will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' A synopsis teases what's to come: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077 — a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? Ikarashi will be joined by returning Edgerunners collaborators Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) as lead character designer and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will handle the screenplay adaptation. While there's no premiere date just yet, fans lucky enough to attend the Peacock Theater panel later that night were treated to a closed-door viewing of new teaser footage, which you can peep here. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is currently in production, with a future release planned for Netflix. More updates will be shared via the official website, newsletter, and CD Projekt Red's social channels on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
