Hard working Yusuf scoops top prize at Lions' end of season awards
Seam bowler Codi Yusuf earned recognition for multiple seasons of good returns by being named the Gauteng Lions' Player of the Season on Thursday night.
The 27 year old, now contracted to English County Durham, has often operated out of the spotlight in a star-studded Lions side but got his moment to shine at the Lions' awards dinner where he walked away with four gongs including bowler of the year in both the four-day and one-day competitions.
The Knysna-born right arm seamer has become one of the most reliable players on the domestic circuit and has never shirked responsibility when a captain has called on him to deliver a spell.
A relentless worker, his constant improvement in the past few seasons earned him an SA A call-up at the start of last season when Sri Lanka toured, and while he didn't perform in the manner he'd have hoped — with the national coach Shukri Conrad watching — the lessons from that series were applied when he turned out for the Lions.

Corbin Bosch's record, despite a tiny sample size, is on par with the best to play Test cricket. Corbin Bosch has had a scarcely believable start to his Test career. He averages 108.5 with the bat and 19.1 with the ball, elite numbers for any cricketer. His unbeaten century and second-innings five for 43 in South Africa's 328-run victory over Zimbabwe in their first Test certainly helped that. What makes Bosch's statistics even more remarkable is that he has only played two Test matches so far, highlighting just how well the 30-year-old Durban-born all-rounder has taken to international red-ball cricket. His success at the highest level has been years in the making, having debuted in first-class cricket in 2017 for the Titans. It took three years since winning the under-19 World Cup with South Africa in 2014 before he made his professional red-ball debut, and another seven before his Test debut. Everything happened slowly for Bosch and then all at once, with the past seven months of action leading to several highlights. Among them is debuting for South Africa in One Day International and Test cricket, winning the SA20 with MI Cape Town, making his Indian Premier League debut and being part of the squad that won the World Test Championship final at Lord's. 'I was actually speaking to my mum about it the other day,' Bosch said in a press conference from Zimbabwe on Wednesday. 'I still need to pinch myself that everything is real. 'I've pretty much had a magical seven-month period. I've played some really, really good cricket. 'But I've surrounded myself with some fantastic people that have just guided me and pushed me even when times were tough. I knew that, eventually, when I got the opportunity, I was going to try and grab it with both hands. 'Fortunately for me, the rub of the green has gone my way thus far, and hopefully it may continue.' Fighting for a spot Coming in at No 8 for the Proteas against Zimbabwe, Bosch played with supreme composure as he first played second fiddle to a belligerent Lhuan-dre Pretorius before guiding the tail and notching up his first century in professional cricket. Bosch's technique is sound and he evidently has the ability to go through different gears depending on the situation in the match. And yet, 'I love my batting, but my DNA is fast bowling', the big quick said. Bosch's father is Tertius Bosch who played one Test match for South Africa, in 1992, as a fast bowler. 'It's not many that can bowl 140km/h and bat the way he does,' stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj said about Bosch at the conclusion of the first Test. Despite all of his attributes, Bosch is seemingly down the pecking order on the Test team's list of all-rounders. Wiaan Mulder, who has been made captain for South Africa's second Test against Zimbabwe following a groin injury to Maharaj, is being handed an increasing amount of responsibility, which indicates his importance to the side. The squad in Zimbabwe is also missing regular faces, including Marco Jansen who usually bats at No 8 and opens the bowling. 'I think we have a healthy competition in South Africa at the moment,' Bosch said about where he sees himself in the hierarchy. 'I said to Shuks [Conrad] in Arundel that I'm going to make his job as hard as possible, whether it's the bat and the ball. 'But we're in a fortunate position in South Africa that it's such a good and healthy competition that it forces the guys at the top to be at their game. 'I don't know where I stand in the pecking order, but it doesn't bother me. If I represent my country, I just want to give it my best. If I'm on the side, I will support the guys to the end. So to me, I don't really focus on that.' DM

Farrell says slow-starting Lions still have work to do
British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell said his players need to work on their slow starts, despite demolishing Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Wednesday. The Lions scored eight tries in a 52-12 win over Queensland, the touring side's second big margin over a Super Rugby side following their 54-7 victory over Western Force in Perth on Saturday. In both encounters, the Lions were under fierce pressure early on before running away with the match in the second half. A fired-up Reds dominated the opening 15 minutes at Suncorp Stadium and led twice, 7-0 and 12-7, before the Lions eventually settled and gradually took control. "I actually thought the Reds came out of the blocks very well," Farrell said. "Once we got a bit of continuity, I thought we played some excellent rugby. "You know we could have been more clinical and that obviously would have been better for us going in at half-time." The Lions blew a number of first-half scoring chances through knock-ons and poor decisions, but Farrell said his side recovered well as they shut out the Reds after the break. "I was pleased with our composure after a few setbacks. "Our defence throughout was good and I was pleased we kept them out." Farrell said fullback Elliot Daly would be going for X-rays after suffering a heavy knock to his forearm that forced him off in the second half. Daly was seen on the bench with his arm wrapped in ice, but Farrell said there were no other injury concerns.

Kaizer Chiefs set to announce more signings
Amakhosi have announced three signings so far. Kaizer Chiefs announced that more new signings will be unveiled after the first three signings were confirmed. On Tuesday, Amakhosi announced the signings of left-back Nkanyiso Shinga, midfielder Ethan Chislett, and striker Flavio Silva. 'Kaizer Chiefs will kick off the month of July by introducing three new players, with more signings expected during this current window to strengthen their playing squad for the upcoming season,' read a statement from Chiefs. 'The technical team and management deemed it apt to strengthen the squad in different areas, from attack to defence, to ensure that the team is ready to tackle the challenging PSL season and the CAF Confederation Cup, kicking off in August. 'Starting on the frontline, Amakhosi have secured Portuguese striker Flavio Silva from Persebaya Surabaya in Indonesia. Silva, a prolific goal-scorer, netted nine goals in 33 matches last season and had an impressive 30 goals in 45 appearances for Persik Kediri the season prior. The Guinea Bissau-born player will wear jersey #77. 'In midfield, Amakhosi have enlisted 26-year-old Ethan Chislett, an attacking midfielder known for his creative abilities. The Durban-born playmaker joins the Club after spending most of his playing career in England, as well as a stint in Spain. He recently enjoyed a successful season with Port Vale, where he provided key assists and created numerous scoring opportunities. 'Moving to the backline, Chiefs have reached an agreement with Portuguese club FC Alverce to sign Nkanyiso Shinga. The talented left-back, also originally from Durban, is a versatile operator who can also play in midfield and attack. At 25 years old, Shinga returns to South Africa after seven years in Portugal to make his first appearance in the PSL. He will don jersey #74.
