Yusuf prepares for 'most important game' of his career after maiden call-up to Proteas
Lions fast bowler Codi Yusuf has earned his maiden call-up to the Proteas Test squad after an impressive few months this year. Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix Now that the ICC World Test Championship celebrations are over, the Proteas Test team switch focus to this week's first of two Test matches against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The series falls outside the new World Test Championship cycle. However, it still carries significant weight as South Africa's fringe players will get a taste of Test cricket, further widening the talent pool for head coach Shukri Conrad to choose from for the 14 Tests that lie ahead in the new cycle. Five key Test players will be rested for the series, including Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen. In addition, captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained during the WTC final at Lord's earlier this month. Next Stay Close ✕ With most of the experienced heads sitting out the Zimbabwe tour, the likes of Codi Yusuf have earned their maiden Test call-ups, alongside Lesego Senokwane and Lhuan-dré Pretorius. Yusuf, who enjoyed an impressive domestic season for the Lions and a stint with Durham in the County Championship, is well aware of the magnitude of the opportunity. 'I would say this is probably the most important game in my career so far,' Yusuf told Independent Media. 'I haven't had a taste of international cricket yet, but it would be unbelievable to go and make a mark there and show people that I can perform at the highest level. "I personally believe in myself and feel like I can do that, and I know a lot of other people do as well. I know Shuks does as well, and that's why he would have chosen me to be part of his squad. 'I don't want to put too much pressure on the game and on the moment, but it would definitely be up there as probably the most important game in my career so far.' Yusuf has enjoyed a career-defining few months — going from being omitted from the South Africa 'A' squad for the Caribbean tour and instead named in the South Africa Emerging team for the Bangladesh tour, to playing county cricket in the UK, and now earning a spot in the Test squad. The 27-year-old was in the UK when he received a message from Proteas team manager Volvo Masubelele, followed by a phone call from Conrad himself to inform him of his maiden Test selection. Like any youngster receiving a long-awaited call-up, Yusuf shared the news with his family. 'It's very weird how things can change and how quickly things can happen,' said Yusuf. "I was supposed to be in that Emerging squad. I had applied for my visas, and just before everything got finalised, Durham came along for me to come play some county cricket. That on its own was a very proud moment for me, my family and also a very proud moment for my wife 'Shuks gave me a call after I had played about four County games and asked me how the UK was going? He asked if I was still there. I was like, 'yeah, it's good. I'm enjoying my time'. 'Actually, Volvo first sent me a message, and I was like, okay, maybe there's some sort of sniff coming my way. I think it was about two minutes later when Shuks gave me a call. 'Shuks told me that I'd been chosen to be part of the squad travelling to Zimbabwe. He just wished me congratulations and told me that I'm deserving of the opportunity and that he looks forward to having me involved in the squad. 'I was at my house when that happened, and as soon as I got off that call, I called my wife and we spoke about it — she was over the moon — and then shortly after that, I called my parents. "They were also over the moon. My family members were there as well, and there was just a lot of cheering and celebration on the phone. 'It's been a dream for me to play for my country, so when I got that call, I was like, oh wow, okay, this is really happening. I'm very excited to get into that environment and see what it's about, and experience what it's like playing at an international level,' he concluded. Proteas Test squad for Tour of Zimbabwe Keshav Maharaj (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne, Codi Yusuf.

Yusuf thanks Durham after first SA Test call-up
Codi Yusuf has thanked Durham as he cuts short his stint with the county to join up with South Africa's Test originally signed for six Championship matches, but he is leaving early after being picked for the World Test Champions' two-match series in Zimbabwe, starting on 28 right-arm fast-medium bowler impressed with 17 wickets in his four Durham games at an average of just over 20."It's been an unbelievable experience, and there's been a lot of growth for me," he said, external."There's a lot I can go into this first Test call-up with." South Africa have rested five of the team that beat Australia at Lord's for these two games in Zimbabwe, including new-ball bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco puts Yusuf in line for a Test debut, and after a strong domestic summer, he has done well in in to cover an injury crisis on a recommendation from fellow Durham and now South Africa team-mate David Bedingham, he took six wickets on his Durham debut against Worcestershire as the team won two and drew one of those four Championship games."It's been phenomenal," he said. "Starting in Worcester was a lovely introduction to county cricket for me, and I carried on from that."If Durham ever give me a call at some point down the line, I'll take it in a heartbeat to make sure I'm back playing here."

Hard working Yusuf scoops top prize at Lions' end of season awards
NB: PLEASE DON'T PUBLISH, THIS IS EMBARGOED Seam bowler Codi Yusuf earned recognition for multiple seasons of good returns by being named the Gauteng Lions' Player of the Season on Thursday night. The 27 year old, now contracted to English County Durham, has often operated out of the spotlight in a star-studded Lions side but got his moment to shine at the Lions' awards dinner where he walked away with four gongs including bowler of the year in both the four-day and one-day competitions. The Knysna-born right arm seamer has become one of the most reliable players on the domestic circuit and has never shirked responsibility when a captain has called on him to deliver a spell. A relentless worker, his constant improvement in the past few seasons earned him an SA A call-up at the start of last season when Sri Lanka toured, and while he didn't perform in the manner he'd have hoped — with the national coach Shukri Conrad watching — the lessons from that series were applied when he turned out for the Lions.

Codi Yusuf loving bowling with the Duke ball
Lions fast bowler Codi Yusuf has been in impressive form for Durham in the English County Championship. Picture: BackpagePix Image: Picture: BackpagePix Proteas coach Shukri Conrad may have named five fast bowlers in his artillery for the World Test Championship final against Australia next month at Lord's, but in the case of an emergency he will not need to look too far for backup if required. Lions fast bowler Codi Yusuf has taken the English County Championship by storm, claiming 13 wickets in four innings for Durham, in Division 1. He is currently playing in a four-day fixture against Nottinghamshire, which includes Proteas wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne in their line-up, who was ironically his 100th first-class victim on Friday. Yusuf also struck a handy unbeaten 44 from No 9 against Hampshire. It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for the 27-year-old after swapping Florida on the west Rand of Johannesburg for the north-east of England after being recommended to Durham by David Bedingham. The Proteas Test No 5 is a stalwart at Durham having topped the Division 1 run-scorers charts last year and had whispered a few quiet nothings in ear of head coach Marcus North. 'I got a message from Bedders asking if I was keen to come and play some country cricket,' Yusuf said. 'I was very excited about the message. Marcus North then contacted me. He obviously asked me if I'd be keen. 'It's always been an aspiration and a dream for me to come and play country cricket. So, I could never have turned that down. 'I didn't really speak about the contract to him. I gave that to my agent and my agent dealt with that. And I think the very next day, things were finalized and everything and before I knew it, I was on the plane and down in Worcester playing my first county game. 'For a player of Bedders' calibre, for him to recommend you, that makes you feel pretty special.' It was not just on Bedingham's word that the former Australian Test batter North went looking down for Yusuf. The wiry paceman was in sublime form for the Lions in the CSA four-day competition last domestic season, where he bagged 23 wickets at 21.34, including 4/46 in the final at the Wanderers. 'I always play to my best ability. I always think that this game has a weird way of rewarding you for what you work hard for. It was always a vision of mine to come down and play county cricket,' Yusuf said. 'However, obviously, without that being on the table, you can't say that you're going to come. So I've just done my best and obviously, I feel like the rest will kind of see to itself. 'Like you say, I got 26 wickets in the four-dayers, and it obviously gave Durham an insight of what I'm about, and, of course, Bedders with the recommendation obviously helped me a lot.' Yusuf is certainly learning more about his craft as he experiences the vastly contrasting conditions at the various County grounds, while also learning how to bowl with the Duke ball instead of the Kookaburra as he does back home. After making his debut on a seamer-friendly surface at Worcester's New Road, he has since encountered two batting paradises at Southampton and Chester-le-Street. 'The Duke ball definitely swings for a lot longer. I think it stays a lot harder than what the turf (Kookaburra) does. 'Obviously, it's my first season playing with the Dukes ball, but I've absolutely loved bowling with the Dukes ball so far. 'The game against Worcester was a lot easier than the game against Hampshire. The game lasted two days. (6:17) I took six wickets, obviously, in that game. 'And I feel like the pitch was just lovely to bowl on. It was quite bowler friendly. So just in that sense, it was phenomenal to come in and that be my first game. 'Thinking like, oh my word, it's going to be lovely to bowl here in the UK. And then the game against Hampshire, it was quite flat. A lot of work was put into us getting those 10 wickets against Hampshire. 'However, the ball was reversing for me. So I love to bowl with a ball that reverses. I felt like I had at least something that I could work with on the pitch that was quite flat. 'I managed to get three wickets out of that. And I think I scored 44 runs or something like that. So, I was quite happy with my performance there.'
