Gen Z are cancelling hotel check outs, labelling it an 'old people's' act
Lining up is an antiquated act, and moving forward we should be able to waltz out without saying a word.
That's the logic. Why wait just to hand a card over? That's valuable doom-scrolling time.
After a few days of hotel check-out rabbit-holing, allow me to explain what's going on (and the new rules of checking out of a hotel). The latest Millennial travel trend Gen Z has deemed uncool
The hotel check out theory made waves on on Sunday, with popular Instagram account @iamthirtaf posting: "Boomers will literally wait in a hotel line to tell someone at the front desk that they are 'checking out' instead of just going home."
The post cleaved people into two camps, with some agreeing it's time to phase out as much human interaction as possible from hotels, and others saying checking out is a habit worth maintaining.
Over on Reddit, a thread on this same topic popped up on Monday, discussing whether checking out was actually "wasting the clerk's time" or indeed saving them time.
Opinion was split, with some people saying it's polite to let staff know you're checking out, as they need to clean your room, and others saying it's unnecessary.
"I always check out at the desk," one said. "It lets them know that I have left and they can clean the room."
Another said: "If you can check out through an app, I'll do that. If there is no line, I'll let the clerk know. But I'm not going to stand in a line to let anyone know though."
In another thread, a hotel worker ranted about how it slows housekeeping down if you don't check out, furious that "out of around 50 check outs each morning, I see maybe 15-20 of them at the front desk."
She adds: "When did it become the norm to just walk out of the hotel without telling any of the front desk staff that you are leaving?" So, what's the right answer?
Simone Mitchell, Escape's Associate Digital Editor, hopes the front desk check out eventually becomes a thing of the past (though she still does follow a hotel's check-out policy).
"Oh my god yes," she said. "Flee the scene. Any opportunity to minimise small-talk with strangers, I am all for. I don't want to have to wax lyrical about how much I enjoyed my stay when I have an impatient Uber driver waiting."
"And increasingly - especially in south east Asia - they put the hard word on you to give a five-star rating on Google/Trip Advisor as soon as you concur that you had an enjoyable stay. Nope, a key drop box at reception is my hotel love language."
Escape Social Media Editor Edwina Hart is another fan of the Irish exit: "I'm all for a quick, fuss-free check out," she says. "Especially if it saves time when you're rushing to catch a flight!"
Escape Editorial Production Manager Alessandra Allegretti, however, says "it's basic manners to say bye and thank the the staff before going."
John Hannan, Escape Digital Director, says it's rude to leave without saying anything and that - for him - checking out of a nice hotel is all part of the experience (though he concedes that when travelling for business he's be happy with a drop off box).
Rowena Ryan, Escape Digital Editor says talking to hotel staff is how you can score upgrades, get local advice and see a friendly face - all things which add up to making your experience feel like a holiday.
As for me, a 30-year-old still confused about whether I identify more as a Millennial or Gen Z, I think checking out is an old people act that I would happily see abolished. So long as I don't have to download an app instead (no memory on my phone). The verdict
Is it time for checking out of a hotel to go the way of MySpace, Jason Derulo, Good Charlotte, Green Day and Fedoras? For the time being - the polite thing to do is to follow your hotel's policy.
Some hotels will have drop boxes for your room key. Others won't. So be guided by the place you're in. What's the future of checking out?
Some hotels have a digital self service option (which allows you to check out on your own) and a growing number of guests are using it (currently around 30 per cent of guests at A by Adina Sydney are using this system).
TFE Hotels' Global Marketing Officer, Katia Giurtalis explains that they are also testing people's check out preferences at a micro hotel lab called MM:NT, in Berlin. "Our theory is that there's a cohort of Gen Z and Millennial travellers in particular that are open to new ways of interacting with hotel services," she told Escape.
"We're using the lab to explore various hotel interfaces to see how we can adapt to changing behaviours and demands."
In other words: watch this space. Checking out is still a thing - for now. But not checking out is becoming more of a thing.
So - like self service check outs at supermarkets there's probably going to be both options moving forward. Put that in your ankle socks and scratch it. And now excuse me while I go cry into the nearest IPA.

"I did the old dine and dash, and I didn't even realise I'd done it," he admitted. "I felt terrible." The next morning, Irwin contacted the restaurant as soon as he realised the error, offering to pay remotely. "They said: 'We love what you do, it's all good, sorry for the mix-up- just leave us a good review'," Irwin said. "So I said, 'Guys, Jetty Pavilion, I'm going to do you one better'." Urging his followers to support the venue, Irwin gave the restaurant a glowing plug online: "Fantastic local business, great team, great food, amazing atmosphere- that's my review." He also promised to return in person. "I'll be coming back up through Coffs Harbour and I'll give you the money myself," he said. "Today is not the day I start my life of crime, as much as the tabloids would love that, it's not happening," he joked. The owners of Jetty Pavilion responded warmly after spotting the video post. Robert Irwin has apologised to a Coffs Harbour restaurant following for an accidental dine and dash, after he was swarmed by fans as he got his lunch in the NSW coastal city. The wildlife warrior, 21, is currently on a road trip down the east coast of Australia, with him passing through the small city, on the mid North Coast, stopping at the Jetty Pavilion. Irwin, sitting in his car, told his 7.6 million Instagram followers what happened, admitting he forgot to pay for his salad. 'I'm road tripping down the east coast of Australia at the moment. I stopped in at Coffs Harbour, beautiful coastal town in NSW,' Irwin began, in his typically charming tone. 'I ordered a takeaway salad. It turned into a bit of a frenzy; it was a little bit of a flurry there for a minute.' Irwin said the restaurant was 'super fast' with his lunch order, as he greeted fans. He continued: 'I made sure I said 'hi' to absolutely everyone. Cheers, thanks so much, see you later. 'The next morning, I wake-up and realise, I never paid for my salad. 'I did the old dine and dash, and I didn't even realise I had done it. I felt terrible.' For their trouble, Irwin gave the restaurant a shout-out on his wildly popular Instagram, ensuring to tag the local business, and requesting his own followers to follow the Jetty Pavilion. 'The Jetty Pavillion rocks! I am so sorry again and thank you for being so cool,' he wrote. 'Guys, go give them some love, let's see how many new followers we can get these legends.' The Jetty Pavilion said it was no harm done by the reality star, praising him for his visit. 'Thank you soooo much for visiting our venue we're honestly blown away. This may just be Bali's most sophisticated bar
There are not many opportunities to dress up for a night out in Bali, and it's not only because of the tropical heat. Bali is after all a holiday place and when people go out, they tend to wear shorts, T-shirts, summer dresses — even Bintang singlets and thongs. Most nightclubs in Bali and even fine-dining restaurants have no dress codes for fear of driving away guests. That's why I was excited about Segno, a modern Japanese cocktail bar in the beachfront tourist hub of Canggu that, based on the photos on its Instagram account, screamed sophistication. More so it has a dress code, which told me the owners prefer quality over quantity when it comes to putting bums on seats. I was not disappointed. From the moment one steps foot in Segno and sashays up the flight of stairs with plush red carpet and dark red walls, they enter another world: an old-world gentleman's club with classical appeal where the music is soft and evocative, where the ceilings are patterned and inlaid with LED strip lights, where wood panels and black and white photographs paper the walls and where dim lighting sets the mood for a night of quiet conversation and flickering eye contact. Groups at Segno tend to sit along the couch areas bracing the walls, or in private rooms. My partner and I made a beeline for the bar, where we were seated not on bar stools but on super comfortable armchairs with deep, buttery leather upholstery. The bar floats at waist level where Segno's bartenders, elegantly attired in crisp white shirts with bow ties and suspenders, welcomed us with warmed hand towels and warm smiles. The menu features classic cocktails plus 30 signature drinks, many with Balinese ingredients. But they also make bespoke drinks based on customers' preferences, tastes and moods, which is where our evening began. I was served a grapefruit vodka drink with lemon umeshu, a Japanese plum liqueur, and yuzu, a cross between a lemon and mandarin. My partner scored a Southeast Sour made of pineapple-infused Balinese arak, egg white, lemon juice, fresh kaffir leaves and palm sugar that gave the drink a rich caramel note. For our next round, we ordered custom twists on classic margaritas. Mine had a touch of agave nectar turbocharged with chilli, while my partner had torched ginger in hers, which added tropical flavour and spice. For our third and final round, I asked for a luxury version of my go-to tipple: a whisky and coke. The bartender brought out two bottles for me to choose from. The first was a 21-year-old Hibiki whisky from Japan aged in a cask made of Mizunara, a Japanese oak that takes 200 years to mature and adds a distinct sweet and spicy flavour. But at $200 per shot it was a bit rich for me and I opted for the second, more economical option: a Matsui single malt, which was seriously smooth. And instead of little ice cubes, my whisky and coke, along with our other drinks, had only one large cube. 'Ice is a crucial component that shapes the cocktail's consistency, dilution and profile,' explained Sebastian Von Arx, the head bartender at Segno who hails from Switzerland and worked on the Gold Coast.
