Are your coworkers ‘trauma dumping'? Here's why oversharing happens — and how to handle it

New York Post19 hours ago

Your coworker came in at 9, overshared by 9:03, and now you know way too much about their breakup and their bowel movements.
Some Gen Z employees are airing out all their drama on the clock — and bosses, coworkers and HR departments are wondering how to put the lid back on the tea kettle.
'It's kind of like you had your one work bestie, and you'd be, like, 'Oh, my God, you'd never guess what I did last night,'' Adriana Lima, a 32-year-old startup manager (not the Brazilian supermodel), told Business Insider.
3 Forget office politics — the real workplace hazard is finding out your cubicle mate's ex is back in the picture and possibly living in her car.

'Gen Z, in my experience, there seems to be a bit more openness in sharing about family trauma, diagnoses, things that they're struggling with.'
Call it 'trauma-dumping,' 'emotional vampiring' or just plain oversharing — it's a rising trend in offices across America, thanks in part to Gen Z, remote work and a culture obsessed with 'bringing your whole self to work.'
But now that your deskmate is unloading details about their ex's alcoholism again, some are begging for a little mystery.
Lima's caught in the middle: 'At the end of the day, all of us would be doing the employee a disservice if we were trying to act as a mental health professional.'
Blame blurred boundaries.
'We now take our work home readily and easily, basically in our pockets with our phones,' Carrie Bulger, a psychologist at Quinnipiac University, said to the outlet.
'Why wouldn't they blur in the other direction as well? It feels kind of normal.'
But normal isn't always professional.
'Your reputation at work is built on how clearly and credibly you communicate, and oversharing can cloud both,' Carla Bevins of Carnegie Mellon warned Business Insider.
'There's a difference between being authentic versus being unfiltered.'
3 In today's workplace, some believe that every meeting doubles as a group therapy session — minus the privacy and the co-pay.

The stakes are high.
'You don't want to invite bias or gossip, especially in very competitive and hierarchical environments,' Bevins added.
Still, some Gen Zers say they're just being real.
'Gen Z has become much more comfortable with talking openly about mental health issues and is really determined to take away some of the stigma,' career columnist Alison Green told the publication.
But as she also explained, 'workplaces and the culture more broadly [aren't] doing a good job of giving people guidance about how to preserve boundaries.'
Meanwhile, as The Post previously reported, Gen Z's workplace revolution isn't limited to emotional transparency — it also includes an unexpected ritual: the 3 p.m. snack run.
'The 3 p.m. sugar break is more than just getting over that afternoon slump. It is a moment of self-care and indulgence,' said Grace Garrick, a 30-year-old PR boss whose Gen Z staffers are so devoted to treat time that the corner store knows them by name.
'3 p.m. is like a victory lap after the daily grind,' she told news.com.au.
It's part of a bigger Gen Z movement to 'refine corporate culture' and prioritize comfort, even if it means constant micro-breaks, multiple desk drinks, and mid-day TikToks.
3 One minute you're talking spreadsheets, the next you're hearing about your coworker's spiritual awakening in Sedona.

But not everyone's sweet on the habit.
'The breaks are constant,' warned workplace expert Roxanne Calder, who told the outlet that Gen Zers may be mistaking micro-breaks for 'micro-avoidances.'
So, before trauma-dumping on your boss or crying to IT about your roommate, take Sasha Leatherbarrow's advice.
'You don't need to overshare; you just need to read the room,' the global talent leader at investment firm Bansk Beauty told Business Insider in the aforementioned report.
'We want personality, not personal drama.'

The 10 most affordable states to buy a home if you're single

Buying a home in 2025 can feel out of reach, especially if you're single. used SmartAsset data to find 10 states where solo buyers can best afford a home. Eight of the top 10 are in the South, but one Southern state surprisingly didn't make the cut. From takeout to doctor visits, soaring costs mean single Americans need every advantage they can get. That's especially true when it comes to buying a home. As of June, the US median listing price was $440,000, according to a steep cost for many Americans who live from paycheck to paycheck or are severely cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. Finding an affordable home as a single buyer can be tough, but data can help you understand where the opportunities might be. To determine where single people can buy homes and still live comfortably, combined national income threshold data — the minimum income needed to cover basic expenses like housing, food, and savings without financial hardship — from an analysis of MIT living wage calculator data by financial technology company SmartAsset, with its housing data. The research team found that the 10 most affordable states for singles have median listing prices below $440,000, with monthly mortgage payments, excluding the cost of tax and home insurance, under $2,000 — based on a 6.81% interest rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage. These states are largely in the South, reinforcing the region's existing reputation as an affordable place to live. While familiar budget-friendly spots like Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana made the list, one Southern state was surprisingly absent: Texas. Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at told Business Insider that the state's influx of movers, drawn by relatively low home prices and better job opportunities, has been a Catch-22 for its real estate market and economy. "The booming Texas economy has driven wages higher, but the cost of living has risen as well, making it more challenging to live comfortably on one income," she said. Below are the 10 US states where it's most affordable for singles to buy a home. For each city, Business Insider used median home price and mortgage data from Income data is from SmartAsset.

Generation Z employees say they rely on AI for emotional intelligence

This story was originally published on HR Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily HR Dive newsletter. Generation Z employees are increasingly using artificial intelligence tools for emotional intelligence concerns in the workplace, such as understanding a manager's tone in an email and drafting an appropriate reply, according to a June report from In a survey, 76% of Gen Z workers said they use AI chatbots. Among those, 94% said they've used AI to navigate workplace issues. Nearly 3 in 10 said they do so 'all the time,' while 40% do it often. 'Gen Z workers often feel more validated and confident after consulting AI because these tools offer immediate, judgment-free feedback in a format that feels safe and familiar to this generation raised in a digital world,' said Kara Dennison, head of career advising at In the survey of more than 1,000 full-time U.S. Gen Z workers, nearly half said they change how they communicate with others after using AI; a third respond more assertively than usual, and 26% apologize or take responsibility. Gen Z workers said they most commonly use AI chatbots to interpret tone, with 75% saying they've asked a chatbot to analyze an email, Slack message or other digital communication. They've also used AI for emotionally charged, sensitive situations that involve miscommunication or direct conflicts with managers or co-workers. Although many Gen Z workers say AI chatbots help them process workplace conflicts, it isn't always positive. Forty-three percent said AI reinforced their biased reaction or beliefs, and 17% said AI has made them less likely to take personal responsibility. 'One of the biggest risks is the elimination of personal responsibility,' Dennison explains. 'If an AI tool consistently validates a user's perspective without challenging it, it can reinforce a fixed mindset, enabling blame-shifting rather than self-reflection.' Dennison noted the potential upsides of AI use but emphasized that chatbots can't address the nuances or empathy needed in sensitive situations. For instance, AI can't interpret body language, understand power imbalances or navigate organizational context, she said, adding that AI users may miss out on professional development or real-world feedback from workplace conflicts. 'Healthy workplace communication depends on empathy, active listening and accountability,' Dennison said. 'AI can complement that process, but it cannot replace it.' More than half of Gen Z workers see AI tools as a co-worker or even a friend, and nearly half said they'd rather ask a chatbot a question than consult their boss, according to another report from Workers said they use AI to complete tasks, make tough decisions, seek advice and find mental health support. In the midst of AI use and workplace conflicts, HR pros can help create an emotionally healthy culture, according to a report from McLean & Co. Instead of avoiding emotions at work, employers can be 'proactive about how emotions and work can coexist to enable workplaces where everyone can thrive,' McLean advised.
