Closing Bell: ASX ends flat as info tech rally falters
Info tech sector reverses course, retreating from 1.2pc gain to just 0.2pc
Gold shines as USD falls; All Ord Gold index adds 1.09pc
Gold shines, tech declines
The info tech sector was providing the majority of the ASX's momentum this morning, up about 1.2%.
As the day stretched long, the info tech gains evaporated, leaving the ASX 200 almost exactly where it started, down 1.2 points or 0.1%.
Defensive stocks stood their ground; utilities added 0.91% and real estate 0.75%.
Gold also made progress, gaining against a faltering greenback as the mounting clamour for interest rate cuts on Wall Street puts pressure on the US dollar.
The ASX All Ord Gold industry added 1.09%, alongside a 0.42% uptick for the Small Ords.
A lot of that movement was in penny stocks, but Emerald Resources (ASX:EMR) added 3.3%, Red Hill Minerals (ASX:RHI) 5%, Kingsgate Consolidated (ASX:KCN) 7% and Saturn Metals (ASX:STN) 12.5%.

Big four bank moves on fixed interest rates ahead of July RBA meeting
Major lenders are cutting interest rates ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia's next meeting as competition heats up among the financiers. ANZ has become the latest of the big-four banks to cut interest rates, announcing a move of 10 to 35 basis points across its fixed-rate offerings. The bank will now offer a lowest advertised fixed rate for a two-year mortgage at 5.19 per cent, down 20 basis points after Wednesday's changes. For those wanting a three-year fixed rate, it will come in at 5.34 per cent, while both the four and five-year fixed rates are down 10 basis points to 5.74 per cent. The move comes ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia's July 8 rate announcement where the central bank is widely forecast to slash interest rates by a further 25 basis points to 3.60 per cent. Canstar data insights director Sally Tindall said ANZ had the lowest fixed rates in each of the one to five-year terms of the major banks. 'ANZ could also be looking to shore up its loan book by locking in more customers on fixed rate deals,' she said. 'The bank's most recent half year results show that just 3 per cent of its residential mortgage book is on a fixed rate contract. 'This means the remaining 97 per cent on variable rates are free to move at any time without major penalties.' Ms Tindall said while ANZ's fixed rates were streaks ahead of the other big banks, particularly on shorter terms, they were still a far cry from the lowest fixed rates on offer, with 13 different lenders now offering at least one fixed rate under 5 per cent. Pacific Mortgage group has the lowest fixed rate over one year at 4.99 per cent, while Easy Street offers the lowest two-year mortgage and BOQ/ People's Choice and Heritage Bank have the best offers for those looking to lock in a rate for longer than four years. 'If you're looking to lock in your rate, don't go aiming for one that starts with a five or a six. You should be looking in the fours,' Ms Tindall said.

Ford at risk of $200m ‘lemon' payout in Australia
Thousands of Aussies who purchased Ford vehicles with faulty PowerShift transmissions could be entitled to tens of thousands of dollars in compensation, following a landmark ruling in the Federal Court. The judgement is part of a decade-long class against Ford motor Company of Australia, with lead plaintiff Biljana Capic awarded just over $22,000 in damages after Justice Nye Perram found her 2012 Ford Focus to be defective. 'As many judges have remarked in the course of this litigation, her Ford Focus is a lemon,' Justice Perram wrote in his 69-page judgment, handed down on June 20. MORE:Huge change coming to Aussie car market Billie Capic is the lead applicant in this big new class action against Ford, covering 70,000 cars. She was frightened for her life when her Focus lost power in February this year. It's done it several times. Picture: Paul Loughnan MORE:Fightback against Chinese EVs begins While the court has so far only awarded damages to the lead plaintiff, Biljana Capic, further hearings are scheduled to determine whether other group members will also be entitled to compensation. The payout is forecast to exceed $200 million to current and former owners of Ford Fiesta, Focus and EcoSport models fitted with the PowerShift transmission and sold between 1 January 2011 and 20 December 2024. Justice Perram said Ms Capic's vehicles, and others like it, were not of acceptable quality under Australian Consumer Law. 'It is clear in the case of Ms Capic's vehicle that the many risks to which it was prone became manifest,' he said. 'Consequently, she presented the vehicle for servicing on 15 occasions between 14 April 2013 and 11 June 2019. Many of these were pointless since Ford had not solved the underlying problems.' Despite years of court battles and appeals, Ford failed to overturn the original 2021 ruling that the cars were defective. Last year, the High Court referred the case back to the Federal Court for a reassessment of damages. Class action spokesperson and CEO of Handle My Complaint Jo Ucukalo said this is a turning point for Aussies who had been let down by Ford. 'These are people who bought a Focus, Fiesta or EcoSport in good faith, found their car to be defective, and then were rebuffed or ignored by Ford when they sought to have the problems fixed,' she said. Ucukalo said the vehicles should 'never have been sold in the first place'. 'The problem was fundamentally defective design,' she said. Class action spokesperson and CEO of Handle My Complaint Jo Ucukalo said this is a turning point for Aussies who had been let down by Ford. Picture: Supplied Ucukalo added that Ford repeatedly tried to delay or derail the legal process. 'It is all the more sweet for car owners given that Ford used every trick in the book to delay, stymie or block fair compensation during the Court process,' she said. Ucukalo is urging all affected vehicle owners to come forward and register via the Ford Class action website. A Ford Spokesperson told News Corp Australia it was still reviewing the court's judgement 'to understand its full effect,' and encouraged any concerned customers to contact them directly. 'As always, we encourage any customers with concerns about a vehicle they own to contact us on 13FORD,' a spokesperson said. 'For some time, we have been focused on improving the experience customers have with us and our dealers. This includes continuing to ensure we manage any vehicle issues in a swift and fair manner so that our customers get back on the road quickly.' The Federal Court is expected to hold further hearings later this year to determine the damages payable across different categories of owners. Experts warn: Buyers about to strike as Reserve Bank cut looms
Household savings have hit a record high, but a looming cash rate cut could wipe out the last of the 5 per cent savings deals. Fresh APRA data shows Australians added another $6.3bn to their bank balances in May, pushing total household deposits to $1.62 trillion. The figures come as buyers return to the housing market, encouraged by growing expectations of a July Reserve Bank rate cut and more favourable borrowing conditions. RELATED: Revealed: Bodybuilder's secret $7m+ Melb hide-out Five buyers fought over this Glen Iris gem Inside Wyndham's most wanted family home But high-interest savings accounts are disappearing fast. Just four banks are still offering ongoing rates of 5 per cent or more, according to Canstar. Two providers, BCU and P & N Bank, cut their highest rates from 5.00 to 4.90 per cent last week, reducing the number of 5 per cent products on the market. BOQ's Future Saver account has the highest ongoing rate at 5.10 per cent, but only for customers aged 14 to 35 who meet monthly deposit and spending conditions. Other top accounts with 5.00 per cent offers include ING, Westpac and MOVE Bank. Canstar insights director Sally Tindall said further rate cuts would likely bring the curtain down on high-yield savings options. 'Rates starting with a '5' are fast becoming an endangered species,' Ms Tindall said. 'If the RBA cuts next week, they could be extinct within days.' At the same time, banks are growing their mortgage books. CBA added almost $3bn in residential loans in May, the largest monthly increase among the major lenders. Over the past year, the bank's mortgage portfolio has grown by $34bn. NAB and ANZ also recorded solid growth in the month, up 0.5 and 0.6 per cent respectively. M R Advocacy director and co-founder of Scale Lending Mortgage brokers Madeleine Roberts said more clients were re-entering the market, often with full deposits. 'A lot of our buyers are coming to us with 20 per cent deposits,' Ms Roberts said. 'That shows real discipline, especially considering how expensive life is right now.' Ms Roberts said falling savings rates and the threat of rising prices had pushed many buyers to act. 'There's a real sense of urgency,' she said. 'Some buyers are desperate to get in before rates fall further. 'That's leading to more competition — and in some cases, overpaying.' She said younger buyers in particular were more willing to look at long-term strategies, but warned that rapid purchases could limit future capital growth. 'If you're buying at auction and paying top dollar, you need to think about a 10-year plan,' Ms Roberts said. 'Otherwise, it could take years to make that money back.' Buxton ACOM's Peter Serafino said enquiry levels at open homes had picked up since May. 'We're seeing more buyers and more interest, but not all of it is converting just yet,' Mr Serafino said. 'People who have been saving steadily are starting to feel like it's time to move.' Mr Serafino said move-in ready homes priced between $1m and $2m were performing strongest. 'Anything turnkey under $2m is still seeing solid competition,' he said. Mr Serafino added that falling rates would give many buyers more financial firepower. 'As borrowing power increases, so will prices, particularly if stock levels remain tight,' he said. The Buxton ACOM agent said. sellers, meanwhile, were becoming more realistic. 'A lot of our sellers have already bought, so they're more motivated and open to negotiation,' Mr Serafino said. 'Last year was more about investors cashing out. This year feels different.' With the Reserve Bank meeting due next Tuesday, analysts say the July decision could shape buyer sentiment into spring. Sign up to the Herald Sun Weekly Real Estate Update.
