Virgin River fans still fuming at 'confusing' Mel and Jack storyline in Netflix hit

Daily Recorda day ago
Netflix drama Virgin River has proven to be a huge hit with subscribers, but some fans have spotted some baffling plot holes in the show's timeline
Fans of the hit Netflix romance, Virgin River, have expressed their frustration over some perplexing plot decisions.
The beloved small-town drama centres on nurse practitioner Mel Monroe (portrayed by Alexandra Breckenridge), who relocates to the North California village after a personal tragedy.

She soon embarks on a relationship with local pub owner and former Marine Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), and they exchanged vows in the sixth series.

However, Mel's seemingly idyllic new life has been far from perfect, as she's faced numerous personal hurdles and local dramas throughout Virgin River's six seasons to date.
As anticipation builds for the seventh series of the Netflix sensation, which has just wrapped up filming, fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the storyline so far, reports the Mirror US.
One particularly disgruntled viewer turned to Reddit after reaching the fifth series and noticing some glaring inconsistencies in the plot.
"6 months since Mel moved to Virgin River?" they started their post.
"I just got to S5E1. Jack said that Charmaine was 5 months pregnant and Mel is 2 months pregnant," the viewer added.

"I'm just so confused about the time in this series. And damn Mel moves on quickly!
"She lost her baby 2 years ago, her husband 1 year ago and now she is pregnant and engaged to a man she has known for, what 6 months?"
The swift timeline has frequently left fans puzzled, as a lot can transpire in just a week in Virgin River.

From shocking family secrets to local crimes and natural calamities, some series seem to unfold over mere days despite the whirlwind of events.
Jack's former flame Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) was notably expecting for several seasons.
Additionally, Mel appears eager to tie the knot and begin a new family just months after her first husband's devastating demise.

A viewer commented: "That happens quite often in TV shows.

"Time moves slowly but a lot happens! It's not always easy to do [a] time jump and keep viewers invested in storylines.
"The pregnancy wasn't planned I believe, getting engaged after 6 months is fast but not unheard of."
Yet another viewer countered: "Definitely not unheard of, but her husband hadn't even been dead a year when she met Jack, and 6 months after she wants to marry him.
"I think it is crazy fast thinking about how she mourned her husband when arriving to Virgin River."
The sixth season addressed some of these pacing issues by advancing the timeline by roughly six months. Whether season seven will follow suit or if the drama will continue to baffle audiences remains to be seen.

Squid Game season three breaks Netflix viewership record

The third and final season of hit Korean series Squid Game has broken records to achieve the biggest ever TV launch for Netflix. Over its first three days, there have been over 60.1m views, a new high for the streamer with over 368.4m hours viewed. The second season launched with 68m views but over a four-day period last December. It has already become the ninth biggest non-English language season ever with the first and second seasons occupying the top two slots. Reviews have been mixed to positive with the Guardian's Rebecca Nicholson calling it 'nowhere near as pointed as it was' in previous seasons. While this has been called the final season, David Fincher has been rumoured to be developing an English language remake for the streamer. The director has worked with Netflix before on political drama series House of Cards, film industry biopic Mank and Michael Fassbender action thriller The Killer. Earlier this year, it was announced that he would work with them once again to direct a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood based on a script by Quentin Tarantino. The streamer has already found success with competition spin-off Squid Game: The Challenge with a second season on the way. When asked about future Squid Game projects, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety that he hadn't heard anything official yet about a remake. 'If they wanted to do a following season, then I think it's obvious I would have to participate and lead,' he said. 'But if it's the US version that they're making, I think sharing of ideas would be enough. I have no intention of being completely hands-on in a project like that. Having said that, if Netflix asks and if I feel like my contribution is needed, then as long as it's not something that would interfere with whatever I'm working on at that time, I would be happy to provide what they need from me.'

Netflix viewers distraught after shock removal announcement of 'one of the best shows ever released'

Netflix is set to remove one of its most popular foreign shows this month and fans aren't happy about it. The French comedy-drama Call My Agent! will officially depart the streaming service on July 22. The beloved series depicts a group of talent agents at a Paris-based agency - focusing on their relationships with their actor clients, who are played by real-life celebrities. Some of the celebrity stars have included Juliette Binoche, Sigourney Weaver, and Isabelle Huppert. Call My Agent! was an instant hit when it premiered on French television in late 2015, but it didn't become a global sensation until the Covid pandemic. Viewers soon named it one of the best Netflix shows of all time, with the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman counting themselves as loyal fans of the series. 'It's a love letter to the business, to the relationships between actors, artists,' Weaver told Variety. 'It goes behind the scenes to show the problems of actors in dealing with different directors and mood scenes, cosmetic surgery and all these situations that come up in a very humorous way that no other show does,' she continued. 'And it has a lot of affection for the business and for the job of being an agent. The agents in the series are very passionate about their clients. It's very inspiring.' A British version was released in 2022 titled Ten Percent, but was canceled after one season. Other international versions came from Turkey, South Korea, India, Italy, Indonesia, and more. The fourth and final season of Call My Agent! was released in 2020, but a fifth season and a feature-length film were both announced back in 2021. Fans have been distraught since news of Call My Agent! exiting Netflix was announced, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment. 'Ummm… why is Call My Agent leaving Netflix?! 'We're still waiting for the fifth season and 90-minute film that we were promised in 2021,' wrote one. 'Oh no! I enjoyed re-watching this every year on Netflix,' wrote a second. The popular series depicts a group of talent agents at a Paris-based agency and their relationships with their actor clients, who are played by real-life celebrities It comes after Netflix dumped a huge amount of popular shows and movies throughout the month of June. Batman Begins (2005) was cut, as well as its sequels The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Children's favorites including Alvinnn!!! And The Chipmunks and Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom also left the streamer. Meanwhile, horror fans had to say goodbye to Cult of Chucky and Ma.
