RS 10 cr bribe for waiving 100 cr loan, alleges Cong
Addressing a press conference in Vijayawada, Mohan touched upon issues ranging from bank loan write-offs and rising fuel prices to the controversial Amaravati project and the alleged weakening of the MGNREGA scheme.
He asserted that corruption has escalated tenfold under BJP rule, claiming that 'BJP leaders are swindling thousands of crores of rupees.' He accused the government of writing off lakhs of crores in bank loans, leading to massive illicit gains. 'To get a Rs 100 crore loan waiver, one has to pay Rs 10 crore as bribe,' he alleged, stating that this sentiment is widely prevalent in Delhi, where he recently conducted an extensive ground assessment.
The former minister questioned the whereabouts of subsidies on crude oil, stating that India is receiving 60 per cent of its crude oil from Russia at subsidised rates. 'Despite this, petrol pumps are not dispensing fuel for less than Rs 100 per litre,' he observed, demanding an explanation from the central government regarding the utilisation of these subsidies.
While clarifying that he is not against Amaravati, Mohan criticised the project's concept as 'a total failure.'
He said that the CRDA acquired 30,000 acres, and 'if you dig an inch, you find water,' suggesting unsuitability for a capital. He also questioned the need for another international airport in Amaravati, just 30 km from the existing one in Vijayawada.
Mohan strongly condemned the state coalition government for allegedly 'destroying' the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He accused the government of diverting 90 per cent of MGNREGA funds, meant for labourers' wages, towards 'material charges,' leaving only 10 per cent for the workers.
Regarding the Talliki Vandanam scheme, Mohan alleged that the government's distributed funds were ending up in 'brandy shops'.
He demanded that funds for students' education be directly credited to schools and colleges.
He also voiced strong opposition to the state government's reported plans to reduce the number of schools in Andhra Pradesh from 35,000 (established during Rajiv Gandhi's 1987 New Education Policy initiative) to 10,000.

More than 250 million workers from diverse sectors—including banking, insurance, postal services, and coal mining—are expected to participate in a nationwide general strike on Wednesday. Organised by a forum of ten central trade unions, the strike or 'Bharat Bandh', seeks to protest what the unions describe as 'anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-national pro-corporate policies' of the Centre. The unions further alleged that prevailing economic policies are exacerbating unemployment, fuelling inflation in essential goods, depressing wages, and leading to cuts in public spending on education, healthcare, and basic civic amenities. Opposition to privatisation The trade union forum expressed its opposition to the privatisation of public sector enterprises and services, and the increasing use of contractual and casual labour. According to the unions, the four labour codes passed by Parliament are designed to suppress the trade union movement, extend working hours, and erode workers' rights to collective bargaining. Demands raised by forum The forum stated that they were asking the government to address unemployment, fill sanctioned vacancies through recruitment, create additional employment opportunities, increase both the number of workdays and the remuneration for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act MGNREGA workers, and introduce similar legislation for urban areas. However, it added that the government was instead focused on imposing the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme to provide incentives to employers. Bank trade unions to participate on July 9 The Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association, affiliated with the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), confirmed that banking sector unions — including AIBEA, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBOA), and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) — will also take part in Wednesday's strike. According to the bank employees' union, the strike will serve as a protest against the central government's 'pro-corporate economic reforms'.

The Congress on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) said U.S. President Donald Trump has for at least the 21st time repeated his claims on bringing about a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan, and asked when will Prime Minister Narendra Modi break his "silence" on this issue. In his remarks on Monday (July 7, 2025), Mr. Trump repeated the claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan by telling the two neighbours that Washington would not do trade with them if they continued the fighting. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "For at least the 21st time in the last 59 days, President Trump has said that he "stopped the four-day India-Pakistan war in May; the war was about to escalate into a nuclear conflict." Mr. Trump has stated that India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire because the carrot-and-stick of trade with the U.S. was used by him, Mr. Ramesh said. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The strikes triggered four days of intense clashes that ended with an understanding on stopping the military actions on May 10. New Delhi has been maintaining that India's fierce counter-attack that day forced Pakistan to plead for ending the hostilities.
