PSM to become Malaysian Sepak Takraw Federation after EGM approval

THE Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) has agreed to change its name to the Sepak Takraw Federation of Malaysia, retaining the Malay acronym PSM.
The decision was made during an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) yesterday after securing over two-thirds support from delegates for the constitutional amendment.
PSM president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan stated that the name change will only take effect upon approval by the Sports Commissioner.
'All amendments to the constitution will take effect after being approved by the Sports Commissioner. So we will send the request soon.
'As long as we don't get approval, we can't use it yet,' he said after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
Sumali explained that the rebranding aligns with other sports bodies using 'Federation' in their names.
'Actually, this isn't new, we have discussed it before and many have agreed as it better reflects our role as the country's main administrator of sepak takraw.'
The AGM also saw elections for the 2025-2028 term. Sumali retained his presidency unopposed, while Datuk Seri Abdul Puhat Mat Nayan was elected deputy president.
The three vice-presidential positions went to Datuk Abu Jimi Samat (51 votes), Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman (48 votes), and Wan Mohd Husni Abdullah (44 votes).

Hamidin returns to FAM as honorary president

SUBANG JAYA — Speculation over Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin's (picture) return to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has been put to rest following his appointment as honorary president during the association's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) today. FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub, who chaired the meeting, said the appointment was based on Hamidin's credibility, vast experience and significant contributions to the development of football both domestically and internationally over the past 30 years. Speculation over Hamidin's appointment as honorary president arose after he announced he would not defend his position as FAM president at the Election Congress in January. 'We do need Tan Sri's presence, particularly given his extensive network with the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), Asian Football Confederation (AFC), as well as with government bodies and the private sector — we need those connections. 'His appointment as honorary president also adds value to the current leadership of FAM,' he said at a press conference after the 2025 FAM First EGM here today. Mohd Joehari said there is no issue of overlapping powers between him as FAM president and Hamidin. 'Our roles are different. Tan Sri's function is more advisory, and he also serves as an ambassador for FAM. 'Like I said, it's not a matter of overshadowing or anything like that. What we see is how this can contribute positively to FAM — and to me, we have to remain objective,' he said. He said the appointment received unanimous support from all delegates present. Hamidin is the second person to be appointed to the post, as in 2014, the FAM Congress conferred the same title on the late Sultan Ahmad Shah, who led FAM from 1984 to 2014. — BERNAMA

Malaysia recommended as host for 2026 Sepaktakraw World Cup

MALAYSIA has been proposed as the host for the 2026 ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup (Men and Women) by the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF), skipping the traditional bidding process. ISTAF secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Kader stated that the recommendation was based on the Malaysian Sepaktakraw Association's (PSM) proven expertise in managing high-profile international events. The suggestion was initially put forward by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh during the ASTAF Asian Sepaktakraw Cup in May and has since gained solid backing from the federation. 'PSM has shown its capability by successfully hosting the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup Kuala Lumpur 2024 and the ASTAF Asian Sepaktakraw Cup 2025, supported by 70 technical officials from 16 countries,' he said in a statement today. The announcement came after Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan was re-elected as PSM president for the 2025–2028 term during the association's Annual General Meeting at the World Trade Centre here yesterday. Abdul Halim congratulated Mohd Sumali on his reappointment, praising his role in revitalising sepaktakraw in Malaysia and internationally. 'The continuity in leadership signifies stability, unity, and a clear direction for the future of sepaktakraw in Malaysia and beyond,' he added. He also highlighted the significance of grassroots development under the National Sepaktakraw Development Programme (NSTDP), which engages over 500 young athletes from 25 institutions nationwide.

Senior Citizens Bill likely to be tabled next year: Nancy Shukri

KUALA LUMPUR: The long-anticipated Senior Citizens Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament as early as next year, pending ongoing consultations with stakeholders and state governments, says Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. 'The draft is already there. We hope to submit it to the Attorney-General's Chambers by the end of this year,' she said during a press conference at the ASEAN-ROK Conference on Care and Support for Older Persons. 'If everything goes smoothly, it might be tabled this year—but realistically, it may have to wait until next year.' Nancy said the ministry is revisiting consultations with industry players and state governments, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, to ensure the bill is inclusive and widely supported. 'This bill is not just for West Malaysia. We want to ensure all states, especially those in Sabah and Sarawak, are on board with what we're planning,' she said. She also noted growing public interest in the legislation, particularly from the private sector and civil society. 'The industry is booming, and many want to be part of the law-making process. That's why we're doing another round of consultations.' On June 13, Nancy had earlier said the bill should also take into account future development, infrastructure, and other long-term factors that may impact the lives of senior citizens. At the time, she said the ministry was still gathering feedback from stakeholders to further strengthen the legislation.
