Michigan State is Sweet 16-bound.
After starting the season unranked, the Spartans won the Big Ten regular season and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. No. 10 seed New Mexico gave them a scare and led for the entire first half in Sunday's second-round game. But Michigan State was the stronger team down the stretch and pulled away late for a 71-63 win.
Jaden Akins led the way with 16 points, while Tre Holloman tallied 14 points, four assists, three steals and a block off the bench. Frankie Fidler added 10 points off the bench including a stretch of six straight Michigan State points as the Spartans pulled away in the second half.
Michigan State advances to face No. 6 seed Ole Miss, which dominated No. 3 seed Iowa State on Sunday to secure its own Sweet 16 berth.
After trailing the entire first half, Michigan State has been the clearly better team late in the second. The Spartans lead 63-54 at the final TV timeout with a chance to take this one home and into the Sweet 16.
It's a back-and-forth battle between Michigan State and New Mexico. But the Spartans have landed the last few blows.
Frankie Fidler just followed up a 3-pointer from teammate Jaden Akins with an and-one layup to turn a tie game into a 56-51 lead for the Spartans with 6:38 remaining. Fidler will have a free throw after a timeout for a chance to extend the lead to six points.

No. 6 Ole Miss has been an underdog in both of its games — and come out with two outright victories to move on to the Sweet 16. The Rebels (+5.5) dominated No. 3 Iowa State, 91-78, covering for the spread for over 58 minutes of gametime.
The Rebels were up 11 at halftime and kept extending the lead, as Ole Miss had at least a 15-point lead for most of the half. The game went over the total of 144.5.
The Rebels advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2001, and they become the SEVENTH SEC team to advance to the Round of 16. That's the most ever by a single conference in the same NCAA tournament.
The Spartans have seized control. After trailing for much of the game, Michigan State's reeled off a 7-0 run to take a 44-39 lead over New Mexico.

Cardinals Predicted to Acquire $18 Million Veteran Before Trade Deadline
Cardinals Predicted to Acquire $18 Million Veteran Before Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the calendar turns to July, MLB trade deadline discussions are heating up. Sports Illustrated's Nick Selbe and Will Laws recently published an article ranking the top 25 trade deadline candidates, and among them, who could be on the move next month. Advertisement The duo predicted the St. Louis Cardinals would land Arizona Diamondbacks veteran right-hander Merrill Kelly. "Kelly has never made an All-Star team or garnered Cy Young votes, but he's been one of the league's most solid starters since coming over from the KBO [Korea Baseball Organization] in 2019." Selbe and Laws wrote. "His 3.78 ERA over that span ranks 14th (min. 800 IP), ahead of hurlers like Dylan Cease and Aaron Nola. He also showed during Arizona's 2023 World Series run that he can be counted on in the playoffs, recording a 2.25 ERA in four postseason starts." Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly (29) delivers a pitchRon Chenoy-Imagn Images Kelly, who signed a two-year $18 million extension with the Diamondbacks in 2022, is enjoying one his best seasons with Arizona. Across 17 starts, he has a 7-4 record with a 3.49 ERA and 100 strikeouts. Advertisement Aside from Sonny Gray and Matthew Liberatore, no Cardinals starter currently holds an ERA under 4.00, and the team ranks 28th in MLB with 603 combined strikeouts. Gray is the only starter to surpass 100 punch outs this season. Adding Merrill into the mix could be exactly what the Redbirds need to make a postseason run. "The 36-year-old could make for a sneaky-good hired arm amid one of his best seasons if the D-Backs elect to move him before he enters free agency in the winter." The Cardinals were also mentioned in the article as potential suitors right-handed starters Seth Lugo (Kansas City Royals) and Edward Cabrera (Miami Marlins), however both were predicted to land elsewhere. Suns' Stance on Trading Jalen Green Emerges After Kevin Durant Exit
Suns' Stance on Trading Jalen Green Emerges After Kevin Durant Exit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Two years after being traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Durant was traded for a second time in his career from the valley to Houston. Following an 85-60 record with the Suns, Durant is now a member of the Rockets. Advertisement Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Sunday that the Rockets are sending Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and five second-round picks (the No. 59 selection in this year's draft, two in 2026 and one in 2030) to the Suns. Durant will be an official member of the Rockets on July 6, when the new league year begins. Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 62 games this season. The Suns finished with a 36-46 record that prompted Mike Budenholzer's firing and the subsequent trade of the future Hall of Famer. Kevin Durant, Phoenix Suns forwardKevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports The addition of Green has apparently drawn some questions from fans and executives around the league. The guard is an intriguing option for the Suns, but there might be a possibility that he gets traded again this offseason. Advertisement Suns reporter John Gambadoro revealed on Sunday that the team is planning to pair Devin Booker with Green up in the backcourt. "The Suns do not plan to trade Jalen Green, he is expected to play alongside Devin Booker in the backcourt." Jalen Green finished his fourth season with the No. 2 seed in the West, the Houston Rockets. The former No. 2 overall pick averaged 21.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. He showed glimpses of his brilliance at times, but many thought Green still had new levels to unlock in his game. The Suns received huge compensation for Durant, but this may not be the only move they make this offseason.
