‘Missing piece': Roosters suffer setback in finals push with Hugo Savala to be sidelined

News.com.au14-07-2025
Roosters players are confident Hugo Savala will have enough time to develop his combination with Sam Walker in the halves even if the five-eighth misses the next couple of weeks with a wrist injury he suffered during Saturday's win over the Dragons.
Savala was in extreme discomfort with 12 minutes to go when his left arm got trapped awkwardly while making a tackle on Clint Gutherson.
He didn't train on Monday and is expected to be out for up to two weeks, with Sandon Smith the man most likely to come straight back in for Friday's crucial clash against the Sharks that will have massive top-eight implications.
'Sandon and Sammy have played their best footy together (so I'm confident they'll be fine this week),' Roosters prop Naufahu Whyte told the NewsWire.
'Hugo is going to be a big loss with the way that he plays, but it's a next man up mentality here and we always trust whoever puts on the jersey to get the job done.'
Smith has started 15 games at five-eighth this season but was dropped to reserve grade on the weekend, with Savala the preferred option to partner Walker when everyone is fit.
Smith's played in plenty of big games alongside Walker and came off the bench in the famous 13-12 win over Cronulla in the 2023 elimination final.
'Whatever half steps up, they all know the system so well and they have full confidence from the rest of the team,' Egan Butcher said.
'It's been so good watching Hugo kill it this year. It's just a little setback and he'll hopefully be back in a couple of weeks.
'He'll build his combo with Sam and hopefully get that right for the finals series.
'One of his (Walker's) biggest strengths is his game management, so he always knows what the team needs at the right time. Having him out there with his composure was big for us.'
While Savala's booming boot has been a revelation this season, Walker's timely return is just what the Roosters needed as they fight for a finals spot.
The star playmaker suffered an ACL injury last year and broke his thumb just days before he was supposed to return to the NRL side this season.
He had a huge smile on his face as he ran onto the field on Saturday and came up with a couple of important plays, including a field goal on the stroke of half-time to give the Roosters the lead at the break.
He spent 10 minutes off the field while in the sin bin for a cannonball tackle, with the halfback joking that he was relieved he didn't have to pay a $1500 fine after avoiding a charge from the match review committee.
His attacking brilliance could be the difference for Trent Robinson's side, with the Roosters now looming as a nightmare opponent in the finals if they get there.
'Sammy is the final missing piece that our team has been needing,' Whyte said.
'He just fit right back in like he never left. He just got back to his business and what he does best last week with that field goal.
'The way that he plays is special, and it's something that we love having. We just let Sammy do his thing and we play off him because he's a special talent.
'Even seeing him at training when he was out, he always put in the work and you could tell he was so keen to get back on the field because he was always carrying a footy everywhere he went.'

Danika Mason cops heartbreaking blow as rugby league boyfriend Liam Knight makes move

Channel 9 presenter Danika Mason has copped a brutal blow with her rugby league boyfriend, Liam Knight, set to spend the next year on the other side of the world. Knight, who signed a deal to join Super League club Hull FC back in March, has set the league alight since making the move from Australia. As a result of his excellent start to the 2025 season, the 30-year-old has been rewarded with a new 12-month contract. While it shows Knight is thriving in his career, it means he will continue to be more than 17,000km away from the Wide World of Sports host, who recently replaced Alex Cullen on Nine's Today Show. Knight, who hails from Alice Springs, was released by the Canterbury Bulldogs last year, after playing just two matches for the club in 2024. He was quickly snapped up by Hull ahead of the 2025 season. Knight was originally set to spend seven months in the UK playing for Hull. But after becoming a fan favourite and one of the club's most consistent players, he penned a new 12-month deal. 'I'm stoked to be staying here – I really love this club and I'm really excited to see what we can keep building over the next 12 months,' Knight told the club's website announcing the news of his re-signing. 'I've really fallen in love with the fans and the atmosphere, both home and away – they're so dedicated. I love the playing group we have here and the coaching staff too – it's a fun place to come to work and that's being reflected in our performances.' While his career is thriving, it is a tough blow to his budding relationship with Mason. The couple's relationship became the talk of the rugby league world last year after Mason split with fiancee Todd Liubinskas in 2023 and called off their wedding, just weeks before they were set to get married. The exact reason for the couple's split remains unclear and became a topic of much speculation among footy and media insiders, with the party line being that it was due to a breakdown in trust. Mason was first pictured on a date with Knight at The Butler restaurant in Sydney's Potts Point in February 2024 before the pair confirmed they were together on Instagram in July. Knight posted a loved-up snap of the pair embracing with the caption: 'My life's good.' Despite the distance that now separates them, the pair have remained together. And while it is undoubtedly hard to be away from his partner, Knight revealed his move to Hull has helped him rediscover his love for rugby league. 'It's been a real ride so far – I got off the plane in March and jumped straight into it,' Knight said. 'I didn't have much of a pre-season, so the first few weeks were about building some fitness, and I feel like I've been building week to week and contributing to the team. 'I had a couple of tough years back home in regards to injury, so coming over to England was a bit of a clean slate for me. I've really found my love for the sport again, so this move has been a massive blessing for me.'

Watching Grace Kim become a major champion has lit a fire in fellow Aussie Steph Kyriacou at British Open

Grace Kim's breakthrough major win at the Evian Championship has moved fellow Aussie Steph Kyriacou to declare she needs to 'get a wriggle on' to join her mate on the list. The women's British Open at Royal Porthcrawl in Wales provides the perfect opportunity for the 24-year-old Sydneysider, who grew up playing links-style golf at 'St Micks' on the coast at Little Bay and expects to thrive in similar conditions this week. 'I love links golf,' Kyriacou, the world No.42, said. 'I love playing in the wind. I grew up at St Mick's (St Michael's Golf Club), which is on the water. I've grown up trying to be creative, so I feel like that's when I play my best golf. 'It's proper links. It's going to be fun. A couple blind tee shots, lots of slopes in the greens. It's windy, right on the beach, so it's going to be a proper links week.' Kyriacou is one of nine Australians in the field after Hira Naveed came through late qualifying. The camaraderie between the Australians on tour was on show when Kim won the Evian Championship in France to become a major champion. Kyriacou's greenside video of her mate's miracle chip-in after putting her second shot on the opening playoff hole 'in the p*ss' and the cheers of the likes of Hannah Green and Minjee Lee went viral. But for Kyriacou, who was runner-up at the Evian the previous year and is yet to notch an LPGA win, Kim's brilliant win was also a reminder of what's possible for herself. 'It's kind of pretty competitive against all of us, I would say. Gracie's got one up on me or two off on me, so I need to get a little wriggle along, don't I?' she said. 'I feel good. We had a little team chat the other day, so have some things that I want to put in this week and just more about how I'm going to play golf. 'Not so much about performance stuff, but hopefully that helps me a bit. I think it will, but I'm looking forward to it.' Kyriacou used her practice rounds at Porthcrawl to play practice shots from everywhere, including the 'hay' that lines a lot of fairways and can provide a bit of trouble. 'Ideally, I don't miss one, but it's a bit inconsistent in the rough. Some parts are OK and then other parts are no bueno (not good),' she said. 'Just trying to get into the thick stuff, get used to what the worst could be.' Kyriacou will be joined at the Open by fellow Australians Kim, Naveed, Green, Lee, Cassie Porter, Kirsten Rudgeley, Karis Davidson and Gabi Ruffels.

2025 TAB Eureka favourites Bay Of Biscay, Fighter Command step-up preparation for showdown

The two biggest guns of the world's richest harness race, Bay Of Biscay and Fighter Command, will head interstate to step-up their preparations on Saturday night. The Victorian-trained pair head the betting – at $3.50 and $5 respectively – for the $2.1 million TAB Eureka, which is just five weeks away at Menangle on September 6. Bay Of Biscay was nominated to race at Melton and Menangle, but co-trainer Emma Stewart confirmed the Chariots Of Fire winner would head interstate for the Sydney race. The prospect of a 2300m race at Menangle – the same track and distance as the TAB Eureka – was more attractive than a 1720m sprint with less prize money at Melton. Bay Of Biscay, who flashed home for a luckless second to subsequent Miracle Mile and Inter Dominion winner Don Hugo in last year's TAB Eureka, will become the first pacer to tackle the race twice. The TAB Eureka is restricted to three and four-year-old Australian-bred pacers. Connections have focused everything on this year's TAB Eureka and snared an early slot through WA breeding giant Rob Watson's Soho Standardbreds. The Bay Of Biscay team even declined an invitation to run in the $1 million Miracle Mile in March, which came after winning the Chariots Of Fire a week earlier. 'If all goes well, we'll have a go at the Miracle Mile next year, but we want to win the TAB Eureka first,' managing owner Tim Bunning said at the time. Bay Of Biscay is the 2025 Group 1 Cordina Chicken Farms Chariots of Fire champion for Emma Stewart and Cam Hart.ðŸ†ðŸ'¥ The son of Somebeachsomewhere USA out of Nike Franco NZ recorded a mile of 1.49.1 with Charge Ahead and Major Hot NZ filling the minor placings. #ClubMenangle — Club Menangle (@ClubMenangle) March 1, 2025 Bay Of Biscay, who boasts 11 wins and seven seconds from just 22 starts, has only raced once since his Chariots Of Fire win on March 1. That was for a narrow win, albeit in slick time, at Melton on June 28. He was set for the $350,000 Group 1 Rising Sun at Albion Park earlier this month, but plans were aborted when a suitable flight could not be arranged. Top young driver Cam Hart, who has been aboard for Bay Of Biscay's past three runs and is locked in for the TAB Eureka, will take the reins again this week. Fighter Command will head in a different direction for the $80,000 Beautide in Hobart on Saturday night. The Jess Tubbs-trained four-year-old won the Beautide last year, which carries with it a golden ticket into the TAB Eureka through the Tasracing slot. FIGHTER COMMAND is Eureka bound!! Taking out The Beautide at Hobart tonight the Jess Tubbs trained and Greg Sugars driven gelding is into the worlds richest race on September 7!🤩 — NSWSOA (@NSWStandardbred) August 3, 2024 Tubbs described the race as the 'first step towards redemption' after Fighter Command almost died after he was struck down with a twisted bowel and scratched just days out from last year's TAB Eureka. 'We've slowly and steadily built him back-up again and with everything focused on this race (the Beautide),' Tubbs said. 'After what happened last year, we haven't looked beyond this week, but hopefully he wins and we can. 'Herbie (Australia's premier driver James Herbertson) is locked in for Hobart, so we're set to go.' Fighter Command had almost six months away from the track after the twisted bowel, but he returned with eight starts for two wins, a second, a third and two fourths. So far only Bay Of Biscay (Soho Standardbreds) and Hesitate (John Singleton), are confirmed runners in the TAB Eureka.
