Steve Smith tests injured finger in New York batting cage before linking up with Australian teammates in West Indies
The 36-year-old will slot straight back in at No.4 but won't be in his normal position in the slips as the Australians look to go 2-0 up in Grenada.
Smith missed the opening match after suffering a compound dislocation of his right little finger while fielding during the World Test Championship final at Lord's.
Rather than travelling with the squad direct to the West Indies, Smith stayed in his apartment in New York, which is where he found the batting cage, and took the first steps towards ensuring he could get back sooner than he might have first thought.
'Underneath this bridge there was a batting cage,' Smith said having rejoined the Test squad.
'It was ideal because it was pretty warm, like 36C … so it was good to be in the shade.
'My mate actually told me about it, and he was able to throw me a few balls there.
'I had a couple of bats last week with some tennis balls and incredi-balls the first day and then some cricket balls the next day.
'Everything felt good; it was with a slightly bigger splint than this one as well, so it was probably a little bit trickier getting my hand in the glove.
'But I just got my stitches out and I've got a smaller splint on now, so it'll be easier getting my hand in the glove.'
Smith still has to prove his fitness for the second Test when the Australians move to Grenada, but coach Andrew McDonald all but locked him in, meaning Josh Inglis could lose his spot.
'I don't feel really any pain or anything,' Smith said.
'It's just getting used to the splint on and the slightly limited movement with the tape and the splint.
'It's not too bad and I've got a lot of movement there now … hitting balls it felt completely fine, so I'm pretty comfortable.
'It'll be just training as normal and then fielding some balls in front of the wicket, which will probably be the strangest thing for me – I don't think I've ever done that in a Test match.
'Fielding at either mid-on, mid-off or fine leg, a bit different to standing at second or first slip, so I think that's probably going to be the biggest difference.'

'This is the right race to try.' Fioprospero is an $8.50 chance with while his last start conqueror Good Banter is the $4.40 favourite. 'If he shows us he can run the mile and a half on Saturday, it's going to open up plenty more options for the horse going forward,' he said. 'He has the makings of being a nice horse for the stable in the new season.' Meanwhile, Smith also revealed his big spring hopefuls Headwater and Waltham have returned to work as they continue to build towards their spring campaigns. Headwater has The Everest aspirations and the plan is to resume in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick on September 6 while Waltham is chasing a berth in the Melbourne Cup.

Indian state blames cricket team for deadly stampede
State authorities blamed the management of India's Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket team for last month's deadly stampede during celebrations for their first IPL title. Eleven fans were crushed to death and more than 50 wounded in a stampede near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium after hundreds of thousands packed the streets in the southern city of Bengaluru on June 4, to welcome home their hero Virat Kohli and his RCB cricket team. Karnataka state authorities singled out the RCB, its partners and the state cricket association for their mismanagement of the event in a report made public on Thursday. It said organisers had not submitted a "formal request" or provided enough detail for permission to be granted for the celebrations. "Consequently, the permission was not granted," it said. The team went ahead with its victory parade despite police rejecting RCB's request, according to the report. AFP has been unable to contact RCB for comment. Four people, including a senior executive at RCB, representatives of event organisers DNA and Karnataka State Cricket Association, were detained by police in the days following the stampede. Players were parading the trophy near the stadium a day after their win over Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad when the stampede occurred. The dead were aged between 14 and 29. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it "absolutely heartrending" and Kohli, who top-scored in the final, was "at a loss for words" after it unfolded. India coach Gautam Gambhir said he was never a fan of roadshows, and the authorities should not have allowed the mass celebrations if they weren't prepared.
