Coimbatore folk lose Rs24 crore to cyber fraudsters till May 15

Time of India19-05-2025
Coimbatore: Awareness campaigns by police to sensitize the public about cybercrimes do not seem to have yielded desirable results, with an increasing number of city residents falling prey to cyber fraudsters every other day.
As per the data available with the city cybercrime police, city folk have lost Rs23.91 crore to online scamsters from January 2025 to May 15.
A Saravana Sundar, city police commissioner, said the people who wanted to invest their money in online trading were being lured by cyber fraudsters, who send them links through Telegram, Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp, asking them to download fake online trading apps. "People should not trust such apps and strangers who approach them with promises of huge profits in online trading."
He said the people should not invest in any third-party online trading mobile applications. "Educated people are falling into the traps laid by online fraudsters. They should be very cautious."
Another police officer said P Ramesh, 46, a dentist from Coimbatore, had lost Rs52 lakh to cyber fraudsters very recently. "He was looking for online share market details on a website and clicked a link. A stranger contacted him over phone and asked him to download a mobile application.
The dentist downloaded the app and invested Rs52 lakh from March 17 to April 14. The digital wallet of the mobile application displayed Rs2 crore in his account.
The dentist attempted to withdraw the amount, but in vain. He realized that he was cheated and lodged a complaint with us."
P Arun, inspector, city cybercrime police station, said the cyber fraudsters were involved in FedEx scam last year. "They threatened people by posing as police officers and cheated crores of rupees from the city residents.
The FedEx scam was drastically reduced following repeated awareness campaigns by the govt and police department. Now, the fake online trading app scam is trending in the city. City folk have lost Rs23.91 crore to cyber fraudsters from January to May 15 this year.
Of this, around 80% of the amount was lost in the fake online trading app scam."
The city police commissioner said they had been creating awareness among the people from all walks of life to prevent them from becoming victims of cybercrime cases.

Prithviraj Sukumaran's wife Supriya Menon breaks silence on years of online harassment, names alleged abuser

Journalist-turned-producer Supriya Menon, wife of Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, has spoken out for the first time about the online abuse she has faced since 2018. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Supriya publicly named the woman she claims has been harassing her for seven years, a Malayali nurse based in Chattanooga, USA, identified as Christina Eldo, also known as Christina Babu Kurien. In her Instagram Stories, Supriya shared a filtered photo of the woman and wrote: 'Meet Christinaeldo. She has been passing nasty comments on most accounts which post something about me. She would constantly make fake accounts and post, and I continued to block her.' Supriya added that she had discovered the woman's identity years ago but chose not to act at the time, as the alleged abuser had a young son. However, the harassment escalated, with Christina reportedly even targeting Supriya's late father. 'Even that filter she has on is not enough to hide the ugliness she holds inside and spews at me since 2018,' Supriya wrote. This attack on her father was the final straw, prompting Supriya to expose her.

Suspended IAS officer Prasanth N accuses Kerala chief secretary of file tampering

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Suspended IAS officer Prasanth N has come up with fresh allegations against Chief Secretary A Jayathilak-accusing him of file tampering and document fabrication in the state's e-office system. In a strongly-worded Facebook post, Prasanth alleged that back-end manipulation of official e-office accounts was being carried out to illegally access files and suppress dissenting opinions. He claimed that on March 12, 2024, he first caught Jayathilak in the act of manipulating documents and has now released what he describes as proof to back his charges. According to Prasanth, forged documents were being used to make it appear as though officers had seen and cleared files they never actually handled. He said this not only amounted to blatant violation of the IT Act - a cognizable offence - but also undermined transparency in key decisions involving crores of rupees. Prasanth has been under suspension since November 2024 after making similar allegations against Jayathilak, who at that time was serving as the Additional Chief Secretary. More recently, on July 22, the state government appointed a two-member panel to probe complaints raised against Prasanth. With his latest salvo, sources say the inquiry panel now faces a tougher challenge. The suspended officer specifically cited a case where his written opinion on a sensitive file was allegedly deleted to prevent it from reaching the minister concerned.

Delhi CA's Chilling Suicide Note After Inhaling Helium Gas At Airbnb

A 25-year-old Chartered Accountant allegedly died by suicide by inhaling helium gas at a guest house in Delhi, after leaving behind purported notes on paper and on social media, police said. The incident - the first case of suicide through helium intake in the Capital - took place at an Airbnb accommodation near Bengali Market in Gol Market and came to light on Monday, when Dheeraj Kansal failed to check out of the premises. According to the police, the owner came across a foul smell near the room when he raised an alarm and alerted the cops. On breaking the door, a police team found Kansal dead on the bed. A pipe with one end connected to a cylinder and the other inside his mouth was also found. His face and neck was wrapped in a transparent plastic sheet, police sources said. Kansal had checked in the accommodation at 18, Bazaar Lane on July 20 and was scheduled to leave on July 28, the sources said. The accountant allegedly left behind suicide notes on his Facebook profile as well as on paper, just incase the social media "post gets deleted". In the Facebook post, Kansal said "no one should be blamed" for his death. "This was my choice alone. Every single person who i met in my life was really kind to me. So i request the police and government to please don't disturb anyone because of this," he said. He said his money should be donated to an orphanage or an old age home. He said his organs should also be donated. Kansal's note revealed his disturbed state of mind. "I want to say thank all of you. I am not going to say any names because I don't want any of you to get in trouble..," he said. Kansal is believed to have ordered the helium cylinder from an e-commerce website in Ghaziabad. The police said the body has been sent to Lady Hardinge Hospital for postmortem. The Chartered Accountant lost his father in 2002 and his mother remarried. He was raised by his grandparents. His mobile phone and social media activities are also being probed, the police said.
