I won't risk my safety by seeing Charli XCX at Glastonbury 2025

Metro10-06-2025
Having been eight times, I'd never felt unsafe at Glastonbury.
Murmurs of crowds becoming claustrophobic and even potentially dangerous felt like a myth or unfortunate chaos that belonged in the past.
That was until I was in the crush to get to Sugababes.
In 2022, they were performing at the Avalon stage, a pop-friendly area with my name written all over it. It has seen some of the greatest artists from the Smash Hits era finally make it to Worthy Farm, when it would have been unthinkable to see them on the bill 20 years ago.
The Avalon stage has a capacity of around 3,000 people and Sugababes were playing in the early evening. They've had six number one singles, four platinum albums and headlined the 02 Arena this year – clearly a 3,000 capacity stage wasn't going to accommodate one of the most successful artists on the Glastonbury bill.
But somehow we managed to make it into the stage. I couldn't see Mutya, Keisha or Siobhan at any point but we made it in when thousands of others didn't, and endured the fresh hell of being part of the stampede trying to get into the tent.
The Astroworld crush, which killed 10 people during rapper Travis Scott's gig, was just the year before and while Glastonbury would never let anything like that happen, it was still suffocating enough to cling onto friends and begin to panic.
It was the first time I've ever been genuinely quite scared at Glastonbury and was sure I would never find myself in the same precarious situation again.
Jump two years and Sugababes were back at Glastonbury, this time bumped up to the West Holts Stage – a significant upgrade with a 30,000 capacity, but still, it was obviously going to be another health and safety nightmare.

Stewards were trying to enforce a one-way system but there's only so much a handful of volunteers in high-vis jackets can do when there are thousands of fans with tunnel vision slipping through the net.
They played on a Friday afternoon, clashing with Paul Heaton who was on The Pyramid, and once again it was an unnerving crush to see Push The Button live at Worthy Farm.
I've spoken with friends and, after our previous experiences, many of us are concerned about this year.
Subsequently, I've made the decision to avoid seeing the artist I was most excited to see.
Charli XCX has by far been the most colossally important artist of the last 12 months. It was impossible not to get swept away by the Brat summer of 2024, whether you were a party girl functioning on Golden Virginia and Smirnoff Ice or you were just a spectator enjoying the ride from afar.
She is the moment and I don't have a doubt she'll bring in the biggest crowd of the entire festival.
Last year, she played a DJ set at Silver Hayes and thousands of people turned up just to watch her spin decks.

Huge crowds were turned away disappointed and it became one of the most celebrated moments of the weekend.
It wasn't even a full Charli XCX show and the crowd was determined, engrossed and, more importantly, humongous.
It is unthinkable, then, that she isn't topping off her Brat era on The Pyramid Stage where almost the entire festival could – and would – descend as one 170,000-strong army.
Instead, she is on at The Other Stage, which has under half the capacity of the Pyramid, and sadly where I wouldn't dare try to see her.
Last year Avril Lavigne performed on The Other Stage, her last hit single now 14 years old, and crowds complained they felt crushed as the swarm of fans expanded into camping areas.
The thought of Charli on The Other Stage is genuinely terrifying and while every single person I know is dead set on watching her set, reluctantly I just can't face it.
Glastonbury offers assurances every year that it always has a 'robust, dynamic crowd management plan in place', which I don't doubt, and Emily Eavis has admitted they've sold fewer tickets this year in an attempt to avert crushes.
But logistically, I don't see how they can possibly keep the enormous Brat army confined to the limited space surrounding The Other Stage. At best it will be unbearable, at the very worst, potentially dangerous.
There is a clash which might thin the crowd ever so slightly with rapper Doechi performing at the same time, but I can't see that being much of a deterrent for fiercely loyal Charli fans. More Trending
It's sad that Glastonbury seems to specifically treat its pop artists this way, sidelining them to smaller stages, undermining their enormous fanbases and essentially losing grasp on its evolving identity.
Granted, Olivia Rodrigo is closing the Pyramid Stage, but would it have been too much to have two humongous popstars headlining the same weekend?
Glastonbury needs to realise what it is and who it's for before someone gets hurt.
Yes, I am very lucky to be able to be in the field come the last weekend of June, but I can't deny I'm absolutely gutted that seeing Charli just feels like a dangerous option, which could so easily have been avoided.

Oasis set list 'revealed' as band shares first look at reunion tour stage

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video We're just hours away from the first Oasis gig in 16 years—and we now have our first look at the stage the once-feuding brothers will share. And perhaps more importantly, the set list has been 'revealed.' Noel Gallagher, 58, and younger brother Liam Gallagher, 52, haven't performed together since 2009 when they announced their split, meaning the world was, quite literally, sent into a frenzy last August when they confirmed the guns had 'fallen silent'. Tomorrow night, after a lengthy wait, the siblings will kick off their string of sold-out reunion shows at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. Noel was pictured arriving in the city yesterday, with rehearsals underway as they prepare to perform some of their biggest tunes to thousands of adoring fans who will scream every word back. With a mere 24 hours to go, the Oasis brothers took to social media with a teaser video that offered a glimpse of the stage design thanks to an epic drone light show. The footage was captured by a drone flying over the stadium, with the sky lit up in a bright 'OASIS' logo. What's more, reports suggest the full set list has been leaked, with MailOnline claiming Oasis will kick off their set with Acquiesce, which originally appeared as the B-side to Oasis' first number-one single, Some Might Say, in 1995. After the fan-favourite tune will come Morning Glory, with the first half also including tunes Cigarettes & Alcohol, Supersonic, Roll With It, and Half the World Away. As per the publication, Oasis will sing 23 songs in total, the latter part of the concert including Rock and Roll Star, The Masterplan, Don't Look Back in Anger, and, of course, Wonderwall. Ending on a high, the brothers will close with Champagne Supernova, also the closing track on the band's second studio album, having saved their most popular tunes til the end. Speaking ahead of the first show, a source hinted that Noel and Lim are still keeping some distance. For the eighth year, 150,000 festival goers will descend on Glasgow Green from 11-13 July to see the liked of 50 Cent, Gracie Abrams and Biffy Clyro, and you could be there! Metro has teamed up with Rockstar Energy presents TRNSMT Festival to offer four VIP tickets to one lucky winner. For a chance to win this massive music prize, simply enter your details here. You have until midnight on Sunday 6 July 2025 to enter using the form below. Entrants must be 18+. Good luck! T&Cs apply*. Full T&Cs apply, see here. 'It's all gearing up now,' they began. 'Technical rehearsals for the band started on Monday, and then Noel and Liam joined them a couple of days later. 'But Liam barely even stayed for the first eight songs before leaving the rehearsals early, and Noel continued on his own.' Nevertheless, fans are absolutely beside themselves with excitement, as the responses to their X teaser video make clear. 'What a time to be alive', declared @SoyNatuVA. Praying that one lucky ticket holder will pull through with a live stream, @mialovesoasis wrote: 'so so excited for tomorrow and i'm not even going'. @DlRTYSHlRT added that those in attendance tomorrow will be 'witnessing history', while @adele_liam told the pair: 'Welcome back I missed you sm'. Acquiesce Morning Glory Some Might Say Cigarettes & Alcohol Fade Away Supersonic Roll With It Bring It On Down Talk Tonight Half the World Away Little by Little D'You Know What I Mean Stand By Me Cast No Shadow Hello Slide Away Whatever Live Forever Rock and Roll Star The Masterplan Don't Look Back in Anger Wonderwall Champagne Supernova The official Oasis account previously shared further details about the structure of the night for the first tour show. Doors will open at 5pm before support acts Cast and Richard Ashcroft perform at 6pm and 7pm, respectively. Oasis will take to the stage at 8:15pm with a 10:30pm curfew, promising over two hours of music. The group will play 19 shows in the UK and Ireland this year before heading across Europe, with tickets sold to 900,000 fans. However, to say it's been smooth sailing getting here would be false. At the end of May, it was claimed that Noel and Liam still hadn't rehearsed together, with Liam also avoiding studio time with fellow performers Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and Mikey Rowe. Instead, Liam, who is set to become a grandfather for the first time in a matter of months, has been chilling at his £4million mansion in the South of France with his girlfriend, Debbie Gwyther. Oh, and he's also been tweeting… Just this week, the singer offended a large number of South Korean Oasis fans by tweeting the phrase 'chingchong'. 'Chingchong' (believed to have originated in the 19th century) is understood as an offensive or derogatory phrase that's used to mock or denigrate East Asian languages. While usually intended to insult people who speak Chinese languages, it has also been applied towards languages and speakers from Japan and South Korea. Liam deleted the post shortly after and responded nonchalantly with 'Whatever' when one user warned he might get cancelled. It's believed Oasis will generate a whopping £400million in ticket sales and add-ons, just from their initial dates. As for their take-home pay, Noel and Liam are thought to be getting £50million each. More Trending But for those gutted to have missed out on tickets, have no fear, because after a disastrous first sale, the group announced last week that more tickets could become available. 'Oasis promoters may be able to release a very limited number of additional tickets for sale once final sight lines are checked and the production is fine tuned,' a statement read. 'These final production releases will happen over the coming days. 'I'm the new Superman – here's how I spent my last hour of anonymity'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video What's that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a new Superman movie that's about to land in cinemas across the UK. Superman is the first film in James Gunn's new shared superhero universe and hopes to usher in a new era for Clark Kent and his super friends. Which brings us to the new Superman himself, David Corenswet. The 31-year-old had just one hour between finding out he'd scored the biggest job of his life and the world finding out. So, how did he spend it? 'Oh, I just played solitaire by myself and panicked quietly,' David laughed while speaking to Metro about that fateful s60 minutes on the red carpet at London's Superman Fan Event. 'No, I had the opportunity to tell about six or seven people who I was close to, and just kind of relished in this one hour where I had a big secret that nobody else knew about,' he continued. 'It's a rare moment in life, so I tried to be present with it, and not be too overwhelmed.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I got to tell my wife and a couple of family members, and then just sat in a chair and waited for the news to break.' Thankfully, once David's not-so-secret identity had been exposed, he could rely on other actors who've slipped into Superman's red Speedos for advice. 'I was lucky enough to exchange letters with Tyler Hoechlin and Henry Cavill, two fellas who have played Superman before me,' David explained. 'They said, 'You know, there's not much advice that we can give. You know, you sort of have to do your own thing.' 'But it was really wonderful to get words of encouragement from them, and then to be able to write to them and talk about how appreciative I was of the way that they had stewarded the character in their time. That was a special experience.' Superman will eschew the traditional origin story and instead introduce us to a Clark Kent (David Corenswet) who's been battling bad guys for years and is already in a relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). More Trending Unfortunately, this means Superman has had time to make more than a few enemies, including Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who has a plan to bring the Man of Tomorrow down to Earth. Will he succeed? Well, you'll have to fly over to your local cinema to find out. Superman soars into cinemas on July 11. Got a story? Diogo Jota's family life, from childhood sweetheart wife to three young kids

The footballing world is in mourning after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother died in a car crash in Spain this morning. Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were both killed in a car accident when their car left the road and burst into flames in the northern province of Zamora. Tributes have poured in from around the world, with Liverpool releasing a statement saying they have been left 'devastated' by the 'unimaginable loss'. Follow Metro's live blog for full coverage of Diogo Jota's death Jota scored 65 goals in 182 games for Liverpool after moving from Wolves in 2020 and is survived by his wife and three young kids. Jota's tragic passing comes less than two weeks after he married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children. The couple had been in a relationship since 2012, and are childhood sweathearts, having attended the same high school together in Porto. Cardoso was regularly seen in the stands watching Jota player, documenting her travels following him play for both club and country. Jota proposed to Cardoso in July 2022 at a lakeside setting and, less than a fortnight ago, the pair got married in their hometime of Porto. In his last post on social media prior to his death, Jota shared an emotional video from the pair's wedding day, captioning the post: 'A day we will never forget'. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Only 48 hours ago, Cardoso released more photos of her wedding-day outfit, labelling it 'My dream come true'. In the comments, Jota responded: 'But I'm the lucky one'. Jota and Rute had three children together and three pet beagles. They have a son named Dinis, who was born in 2021, Another son, Duarte, was born in 2023, and a third child, a daughter, was born in 2024. The name of the youngest child has never been revealed. The couple regularly shared pictures of their family online, most recently following Liverpool's Premier League title win in May this year. Jota's brother, Andre Silva, was also a professional footballer and played for Portuguese second division side Penafiel. Silva came through the Porto youth set-up before leaving to join Pacos de Ferreira in 2017, where Jota had played in the previous two seasons. The midfielder later had spells at Familicao and Boavista before spending two seasons at lower division side Gondomar. In July 2023, he joined Penafiel. Porto, where Jota also spent a season as a player, said they were in 'shock' at the brothers' passing. 'Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and deep regret that we send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also our youth player. May they rest in peace,' the statement said. While many players spend their teenage years in academies, Jota was still playing for his local club Gondomar until the age of 16. More Trending And with no income to chase his dreams, Jota's ambitions were financed by his parents Joaquim and Isabel who paid for him to continue playing football until he got his first break. 'It was not me paying, it was my parents,' he told Sky Sports in 2022. 'In Portugal, things are different to England. I was playing for a small club and we had to pay monthly to be able to play. 'It was only when I was transferred to Pacos [de Ferreira in 2013] that I started to receive some money.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
