Iowa basketball transfer Bennett Stirtz among early ESPN 2026 NBA draft mock
With the 2025 NBA Draft in the rearview mirror, it's never too early to look ahead to the 2026 draft and the potential that an Iowa Hawkeye is drafted.
With new head coach Ben McCollum and a slew of new players, it looks like Hawkeye fans will be treated to an electric year at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. And according to ESPN NBA draft insiders Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo, Iowa fans may get to see a future NBA first-round pick this season.
Givony and Woo released their early 2026 NBA mock draft on Friday and a new Hawk made his way onto the list: Bennett Stirtz. If drafted, he would become only the eighth Hawkeye since 2000 to hear his name called during the NBA Draft.
Stirtz had begun trending upward in a real way with NBA scouts in March, where he played well in the NCAA tournament and drew first-round buzz. Considering the momentum he built, it was a surprise to see him completely forgo the predraft process this spring.
Instead, Stirtz will follow Ben McCollum, his coach at Drake and Division II Northwest Missouri State before that, to Iowa, where he will have the keys to the offense and a platform to further prove himself in the Big Ten. He's a terrific playmaker who figures to be among the top guards in the country. - Woo, ESPN
Stirtz's story has become very well known over the past few months, as he's followed McCollum from Northwest Missouri State to Drake and now to Iowa. Last season at Drake, Stirtz averaged 19.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game on his way to winning the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. He helped lead the Bulldogs to 31 wins and their first NCAA Tournament win since 1971.
He joins an Iowa basketball roster that's a complete overhaul from the one that missed the NCAA Tournament last season, with only Cooper Koch and Jacob Koch returning.
In a highly competitive Big Ten, Stirtz will look to help lead the Hawkeyes back to the NCAA Tournament and past the first weekend for the first time in over 25 years. And in doing so, he could establish himself as an NBA first-round talent.

2026 4-star safety receives second prediction to land with Texas A&M
Texas A&M's 2026 recruiting class already includes four-star Chace Collins, who chose the Aggies over Texas Tech earlier this month. Outside of four-star South Carolina-based safety Tamarion Watkins, four-star safety Tylan Wilson, one of the hardest hitters in the cycle out of Mississippi, has received a second prediction to land with Texas A&M, according to Rivals insider Sam Spiegelman. Wilson had been connected to Clemson during the latter half of his recruitment. Still, after his official visit to College Station, the versatile defensive back feels that Texas A&M's defense is a perfect fit for his skill set, as coach Mike Elko is well known as one of the nation's better defensive back developers. However, credit also goes to defensive coordinator Jay Bateman and defensive back coaches Jordan Peterson and Ishmael Aristide. As I've previously stated, landing safety prospects who can cover the deep parts of the field while serving as hybrid linebackers is vital, especially in SEC play, where most programs are capable of both passing and running effectively enough to counter any defensive weakness. Last season, the Aggies' safety rotation was average at best, primarily due to a lack of symmetry and the introduction of a new defensive system. If Elko and his staff land Wilson, they have achieved their goal of securing at least two safeties, barring Tamarion Watkins' decision on July 13. Standing at 6-2 and 185 pounds, Wilson is currently positioned as Rivals' 13th-ranked safety, and the 10th-ranked prospect in Mississippi. Wilson will announce his decision on July 18. Wisconsin basketball offers rising in-state class of 2027 small forward
Wisconsin basketball extended an offer to rising class of 2027 small forward Deuce McDuffie following its advanced camp on Thursday. McDuffie, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward, is one of three class of 2027 prospects to receive an offer from Greg Gard's program this week. After welcoming a batch of the most prestigious class of 2026, 2027 and 2028 high school prospects to its development camp, UW also extended offers to combo guard Jalen Brown and small forward Jack Kohnen. While neither 247Sports nor Rivals has assigned a recruiting ranking to McDuffie, he does boast four offers at this stage of the process. In addition to Wisconsin, his offer sheet includes Grambling State, Green Bay and SIU-Edwardsville. As a sophomore at Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, McDuffie averaged 19.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.9 steals per appearance. He scored 20 or more points on 15 occasions, including a 42-point, seven-rebound performance against Milwaukee Juneau on Feb. 3. Arguably the most notable aspect of McDuffie's recruiting profile revolves around his familial ties to Wisconsin. His father, Otto, played 37 games with the Badgers from 1992-94 before transferring to Milwaukee for his junior and senior campaigns from 1995-97. While the elder McDuffie did not start a game for UW, he did play alongside future NBA star Michael Finley and appeared in the NCAA Tournament during the 1993-94 slate. As of June 27, Wisconsin has extended offers to six members of the class of 2027: four-star shooting guard Dooney Johnson, four-star small forward Donovan Davis, three-star small forward Ty Schlagel, and Brown, Kohnen, and McDuffie. While the 2027 window is roughly one year away, McDuffie's in-state relationship and familial ties may play a role in where he ends up on the collegiate stage. NBA free agency: Who are the biggest names on the market?
The NBA free agency period has officially started with several notable names available. All teams were able to begin negotiations with free agents who had finished out the season on their respective rosters since June 23. Now, teams will have the opportunity to reach out to all other free agent players as early as Monday afternoon. Several players have already avoided the free agency process and reportedly worked out deals to remain with their current teams. That group includes guard Kyrie Irving (Dallas Mavericks), guard Fred VanVleet (Houston Rockets) and center Naz Reid (Minnesota Timberwolves). Forward John Collins has already exercised his player option to return to the Utah Jazz. Player movement will continue to be reported over the next week, but all free agent contracts will not become official until Sunday, July 6, at 12:01 p.m. ET. Here are some of the biggest names expected to be on the free agent market: NBA power rankings: How all 30 teams stack up after 2025 NBA Draft LeBron James, Forward, Player option There was brief chatter about what's next for LeBron James after the season concluded for the Los Angeles Lakers, but there's no expectation that he will retire or put on a different uniform next season. The 41-year-old currently has a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season that he's likely to opt into, according to ESPN's Sham Charania. James Harden, Guard, Player option Much like LeBron, James Harden has a $36.3 million player option that would allow him to return to the Los Angeles Clippers for the upcoming season. Harden was named to the All-NBA Third Team and was selected for his 11th All-Star game. Myles Turner, Center, Unrestricted free agent Turner's season just came to an end after falling short with the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. While Turner is likely to receive interest from several suitors, the Pacers likely have the advantage by having had a few days to negotiate with the big man exclusively in recent days. Julius Randle, Forward, Player option Julius Randle can return to the Minnesota Timberwolves roster with the $30.9 player option he has available to him. If he decides to return, it would help keep a similar lineup in Minnesota that just played in the Western Conference Finals. Jonathan Kuminga, Forward, Restricted Kuminga will have the opportunity to test the market and sign an offer sheet with any team, but it will be up to the Golden State Warriors to decide to match the terms of any offer he agrees to. Kuminga started 10 of the 47 games he played in for the Warriors in this past season, averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 24.3 minutes per game. He was tendered with a $7.9 million qualifying offer on Saturday, according to ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk.
