Bihar: 34 killed, 6 injured in lightning strikes in past 48 hours
The highest number of six fatalities each was reported in Nalanda and Vaishali, followed by Sheikhpura (five), Patna and Aurangabad (three each), Nawada and Banka (two each).
Besides, Bhojpur, Bhagalpur, Rohtas, Gayaji, Samastipur and Jamui districts accounted for six deaths.
Over 90 people were killed in lightning strikes and thunderstorms in different districts of Bihar in April, which also caused massive damage to crops and houses.
According to the latest Bihar Economic Survey tabled in the assembly during the budget session in February, 'The state witnessed 275 lightning/thunderstorm related deaths in 2023. Among the districts, the highest number of deaths due to thunderstorms/lightning were reported from Rohtas (25), Gaya (21), Aurangabad (19), Jamui (17), and Madhepura and Bhagalpur reported 16 each." Delhi records low of 25.7 deg C; AQI satisfactory
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) The national capital on Saturday recorded a minimum temperature of 25.7 degrees Celsius, 1.4 notches below the season's average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has forecast thunderstorm with rain for Saturday, with the maximum temperature expected to settle around 35 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity was recorded at 81 per cent at 8:30 am. The air quality was in the 'satisfactory' category at 9 am on Saturday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 74, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. Hurricane Gil forms in eastern Pacific but not forecast to threaten land
Agency: Mexico City, Aug 2 (AP) Tropical Storm Gil strengthened into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday but was not expected to threaten land, forecasters said. The Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 1,080 miles (1,740 kilometers) west-southwest of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico. Gil had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 20 mph (31 kph). No coastal watches or warnings were in effect. The storm was expected to keep traveling to the west-northwest in the coming days. Gil was strengthening during a busy period for storms in the eastern Pacific. Another named storm, Iona, which also was once a hurricane, was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression as it moved far to the west of Hawaii. It, too, was not threatening land. Other storms could develop in the coming days in the eastern Pacific, forecasters said. No Flood Can Stop The Wedding: Bihar Groom's Adventure Ride To Shaadi Mandap Looks Straight Out Of War 2
Last Updated: The groom would have taken a direct 35 kilometer route to the bride's village in Bihar, but due to floods, the path became much longer and harder to travel. In Bihar's Bhagalpur district, heavy floods caused a wedding procession to take an unusual turn. The groom, Devmuni Kumar, could not travel the normal way to his bride's house because the roads were flooded and blocked by water. Instead of riding in a fancy car, Devmuni travelled by boat and used an e-rickshaw to reach the bride's home in Katakosh village. He was joined by close to 25 to 30 friends and family members. Normally, the groom would have taken a direct 35 kilometer route, but as the Ganga River had overflowed, the path became much longer and harder to travel. Speaking with ETV Bharat, Devmuni's father, Ramdev Mandal, said, 'The date of the wedding was fixed a month ago and the procession was to go to the house of Ramchandra Chaudhary of Katakosh village in Manihari block of Katihar district. But our Bakharpur village was surrounded by flood water on all sides. After a point, the bride's family had to walk to reach the riverbank, from where they took a boat. At first, the weather was clear, but as soon as they got on the boat, it began to rain. By the time they reached the bride's house, everyone was soaked. Despite leaving home at day time, they managed to reach the bride's village by 8 PM. After the boat ride, their journey wasn't over, they were still forced to walk for a few more kilometres before getting into e-rickshaws that finally took them to the wedding venue. The groom said, 'My desire that the party be accompanied by a band playing music along with pomp and show remained unfulfilled." Apart from Katakosh village, many other places in Bihar, like Nepal, Ganga and Kosi, are also facing heavy rains and floods.
