At least two dead and three wounded in shooting at Nevada casino, police say
At least two people were fatally shot and at three others hospitalised after a shooting on Monday morning at a casino in Reno, officials told the AP news agency. The gunman who opened fire just outside the Grand Sierra Resort casino shot multiple people before being taken into custody, police said. "Officers immediately located the suspect at which time an officer involved shooting occurred," police said in a statement. "The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local area hospital. The suspect's condition is unknown at this time. There is no known continuing threat to the public." The conditions of the victims were not immediately known either, said Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson. Caroline Ackerman, a spokesperson for Renown Regional Medical Centre, said the hospital's emergency department received several patients with gunshot wounds. The shooting was reported around 7:30 am Monday outside in the valet area, Johnson said. More than a year ago, two men were charged with fatally shooting another man who was staying at the resort in January 2024. Reno police warned residents to stay out of the area. Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, responded outside the casino. The Grand Sierra claims to have the biggest casino floor in northern Nevada and sits just a few blocks from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. It's also one of the tallest buildings in the city, with nearly 2,000 hotel rooms. Last year, President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in the resort's main ballroom. "My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation," city council member Devon Reese said in a social media post.

Colorado hit-and-run suspect returns to scene of deadly crash, gets arrested, Westminster police say
A man is dead and now another is in custody after a deadly hit-and-run crash in the Denver metro area. The crash happened in Westminster early Saturday morning, and Westminster police arrested the suspect after they say he returned to the scene of the crash. Officers responded to a report of a dead body in the road near Sheridan Boulevard and West 82nd Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Investigators believed the man was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash. Less than three hours later, while still at the scene, officers say another man, who they believed to be the suspect, arrived at the scene, and he was arrested. It's not clear why the suspect returned to the scene or how police identified him as a suspect, but Westminster police say they've also located his vehicle and towed it. Investigators are now interviewing witnesses and seeking information about what led to the crash and the circumstances surrounding it. The victim will be identified by the Adams County Coroner's Office at a later date.

Agency Scrutinizes Jack Smith After Republican Complaint
An agency that scrutinizes the conduct of federal employees has opened an investigation into Jack Smith, the former special counsel who investigated Donald J. Trump before he returned to office, following a request by a Republican senator. The Office of Special Counsel confirmed on Saturday that it had opened an investigation into Mr. Smith for a possible violation of the Hatch Act, a law that prohibits federal workers from using their government jobs to engage in political activity. Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, had asked the agency to investigate on the premise that some of Mr. Smith's actions, such as seeking quick trial dates in the two criminal cases against Mr. Trump, were designed to influence the 2024 election. The investigation, which was first reported by The New York Post, is unusual in several respects. First, the most severe penalty possible for a Hatch Act violation is dismissal from federal employment, and Mr. Smith left the government at the start of the year. Second, the type of prosecutorial decisions criticized by Mr. Cotton, Mr. Trump and others are far different from the type of cases the O.S.C. typically handles. The office traditionally investigates and addresses violations of federal rules about the civil service. The investigation comes at a time when lawyers representing fired or demoted federal employees have complained that under Mr. Trump, the O.S.C. is not fulfilling its traditional role. In February, the president dismissed the agency's head, Hampton Dellinger, despite a federal law saying that person can only be fired for 'inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office.' At the time, Mr. Dellinger had been arguing for the reinstatement of thousands of probationary workers who had been fired by the new administration.
