Underprivileged students earn top honours at Jasin community college convocation
Gabriel Akob, 21, became the first student from the Seletar Orang Asli tribe to receive the Excellent Student Award (APC).
Meanwhile, Muhammad Azrul Hazami Abu Hassan, also 21, took home the Director-General's Award (AKP) despite personal challenges, including his mother's battle with kidney cancer.
Gabriel, a Certificate in Architectural Technology graduate, said his family survives on his father's income as a fisherman, averaging just RM40 a day.
"To afford my studies, I had to apply for financial assistance from the college and the Orang Asli community," the younger of two siblings told reporters.
Now pursuing a Diploma in Architecture at Merlimau Polytechnic, Gabriel expressed his determination to give back to his community and break stereotypes.
"Orang Asli students can succeed if given the opportunity and support.
"I want to prove we can compete like everyone else," he said.
Muhammad Azrul, from Slim River, Perak, completed a Certificate in Computer Systems and Networking with a CGPA of 3.91.
He credited his success to his mother's prayers and his perseverance.
He is now studying at Sultan Zainal Abidin Polytechnic in Dungun and is active in the Civil Defence Force, having won bronze medals in the force's SISPA Challenge at the national level in 2022 and 2023.
"Initially, I wanted to join the navy's special forces unit (Paskal), but my involvement in CDF sparked a new interest in this uniformed services, which I plan to pursue after graduation," he said.
Muhammad Azrul was selected for the CDF in recognition of his academic excellence, co-curricular achievements and consistent top performance across all semesters.
Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail presented the awards.
Also present was KKJS director Mohamad Kelana Juwit.

GUA MUSANG: The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) has allocated RM1 million to construct a new preschool (Tabika) in Kampung Orang Asli Teranek, Kuala Betis. The project aims to enhance early childhood education facilities for the Orang Asli community. JAKOA Director-General Datuk Sapiah Mohd Nor stated that the new Tabika is essential as classes were previously held in a surau in Kampung Rod, which was unsuitable. 'Once inspections and equipment installations are completed, we will relocate the Tabika here,' Sapiah added. The facility is expected to be operational within two to three months. Strong social and cultural values of Orang Asli community
GUA MUSANG: Eighty per cent of the Orang Asli community in Kelantan continue to hold firmly to their traditional customs and beliefs, despite rapid modernisation and technological advancement, says Kelantan National Department of Culture and Arts director Rohaniza Abdullah. She said a study conducted by the department found that the community was proud of its cultural identity and had begun leveraging social media platforms to showcase its uniqueness to the outside world. Rohaniza said the community had continued to preserve their customs across generations up to the present day. 'The strength of the community lies in its ability to preserve its culture and identity in today's modern world. 'Interestingly, young Orang Asli have used social media as a platform to introduce their heritage. 'The research has opened the eyes of many to the strong social and cultural values still upheld by the Orang Asli community,' she said after the Penyemarakan Komuniti Budaya @ Komuniti Orang Asli programme at Pos Brooke, Lojing, here yesterday, Bernama reported. According to Rohaniza, there are still many unique aspects of the Orang Asli community that have yet to be explored or are not widely known.
