Sangh Roots, Regional Pull: Why BJP Chose PVN Madhav As New Andhra Unit Chief
PVN Madhav succeeds D Purandeshwari -- a prominent figure from the renowned NTR family -- and his elevation marks a shift as it follows the BJP's improvement in the 2024 elections
The appointment of PVN Madhav as the new Andhra Pradesh BJP president has not surprised many within the state unit. His selection reflects the party's strategic considerations and its growing confidence in a state where the BJP has historically had limited influence.
Madhav is a candidate who meets multiple criteria — organisational loyalty, Sangh roots, regional representation, and community appeal. The BJP, as it continues to build its base in the largely unexplored political terrain of southern India, has recognised the need for this kind of a leadership in Andhra Pradesh.
Madhav succeeds D Purandeshwari — a prominent figure from the renowned NTR family — and his elevation marks a significant shift as it follows the BJP's improvement in the 2024 assembly elections. From a vote share of less than 1 per cent in 2019 — lower than NOTA –the party has made tangible gains in both assembly and Lok Sabha segments.
This decision aligns with a discernible trend in post-bifurcation Andhra politics. Over the past decade, the party has appointed four state presidents—two from the Kamma community and two from the Kapu community; two with strong RSS backgrounds and two who previously belonged to the Congress. Madhav, a member of the BC community and a long-time Sangh affiliate, fits the BJP's current requirements both socially and ideologically.
A cost accountant by profession, PVN Madhav has deep roots in the Sangh Parivar, having been active in the ABVP and BJYM since his early years. The son of BJP veteran and former MLC P.V. Chalapathi Rao, Madhav also served as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from the North Andhra Graduates' Constituency during the previous NDA government led by the TDP. He currently holds the position of State General Secretary in the party.
In Andhra's caste-driven political landscape—dominated by the Kammas in the TDP and the Kapus in Jana Sena—the BJP sees an opportunity to tap into the significant BC vote bank, where Madhav could prove to be an effective mobiliser.
The central leadership's selection process has been particularly meticulous, especially with the election of a new national president on the horizon—overdue for nearly two and a half years. Feedback from the grassroots in Andhra Pradesh has indicated a strong preference for leaders with ideological commitment to the BJP-RSS ecosystem, rather than those who switch sides around election time.
Unlike neighbouring Telangana—where the BJP has had a longer presence and a wider pool of contenders—Andhra Pradesh offered relatively limited options for leadership selection. Over the years, several leaders within the BJP in Andhra have migrated from the TDP, while many of the original BJP loyalists have either taken on key roles within the state or been accommodated at the Centre. For instance, Satya Kumar currently serves as the state's Health Minister, while Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma has been inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Union Cabinet.
The recent Lok Sabha polls validated BJP's emerging foothold, with the party winning all three seats it contested. In the Assembly polls, BJP secured 8 out of the 10 seats it contested—an impressive feat given that its ally, the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP, won 135 of the 144 seats it fought.
As the BJP prepares for future electoral battles, both in the state and at the national level, PVN Madhav's appointment signals a calculated, ideology-driven push to deepen the party's roots in Andhra Pradesh.

Karnataka government can contest CAT order, says CM Siddaramaiah
BENGALURU: After the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) quashed the suspension of Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash in connection with the stampede that occurred at M Chinnaswamy stadium, during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations, on June 4, the state government is likely to appeal against the CAT order. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said they have a chance to appeal against the said order, for which a decision will be taken. Meanwhile, the BJP, slamming the government, demanded the resignations of both Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. BJP leaders said the stampede was not a result of any policing failure, but a failure of governance. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka pointed out that the CAT order revoking IPS officer Vikash's suspension is a slap on the face of the Siddaramaiah government. He stated that this is not about any particular officer, but it rather exposes how the Congress government tried to make the police department a scapegoat, while trying to pin the blame on honest officers to cover up and shield its own criminal mismanagement leading to the tragedy. Ashoka pointed out that even the suspensions of top officers like the then Bengaluru City police commissioner B Dayananda are now under review. BJP state president BY Vijayendra said that in order to garner publicity, both the CM and DCM 'took a decision that killed innocent people'. 'In order to hide their blunders, they wanted to blame police officers and divert the issue. The CAT has given a befitting order,' he stated.

CM Siddaramaiah demands rollback of train fare hike
BENGALURU: CM Siddaramaiah on Tuesday urged the Centre to roll back the railway fare hike. 'This fare hike must be rolled back immediately. Don't make people's daily travel another jumla. Let the trains run, not the people's patience,' he stated taking to 'X'. The CM said daily wage workers, students, small traders, and the common man are struggling under rising prices. 'When we increased milk prices to help our farmers, BJP shouted on the streets, and called it anti-people. But now, when the BJP-led Centre hikes railway fares, there is deafening silence. Why? Because this hike doesn't help farmers or the poor, it only helps the BJP government fill its own coffers,' he said. Meanwhile, AICC general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala on Tuesday lashed out at the Centre for increasing railway passenger fare and toll on highways. He also said the hike also affects motorists on the Electronics City Elevated Expressway in Bengaluru. He mocked Karnataka BJP for keeping mum over price rise and asked them to insist for the roll back the hike. He urged PM Narendra Modi to withdraw the hikes immediately without burdening the masses. 'From roads to rails to the kitchen, BJP is road-rolling India's common man with unprecedented price rise breaking the backbone of India's masses. The BJP government promised bullet trains, but gave us derailment, burning coaches, and broken hopes. While the tracks lie in disrepair and passengers hang on to life, they've silently hiked tolls and squeezed every paisa from commuters', he alleged while addressing a press meet. 'If Karnataka's BJP-JDS MPs and MLAs can't raise their voice against Delhi's loot, they should raise their hands and resign. You can't sit in power and play mute while the state gets looted — either defend Karnataka or vacate your seat for someone who will,' he suggested.
