Four officials suspended after inmate dies at Goodwood prison

Four correctional services officials have been suspended following the death of Quinton Fortuin at the Goodwood Correctional Centre in February.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, confirmed the latest developments on Thursday.
According to Thobakgale, two more officials have been re-suspended after being reassigned.
They join two others who were earlier suspended in connection with the incident.

Clash turned deadly
Fortuin died following an altercation with officials at the centre, which also left one staff member seriously injured.
'After reviewing the investigation report and considering its findings, I have decided that the Western Cape Region will reimpose the suspension of two officials who were previously suspended but later reassigned.
'Other officials confirmed to have been involved will also be considered for possible disciplinary action,' said Thobakgale.
A police investigation is ongoing.

Post-mortem findings
A post-mortem confirmed that Fortuin died as a result of 'multiple blunt force injuries'.
The internal investigation has prompted the department to look deeper into management practices at the facility.
Thobakgale acknowledged that the incident raised serious concerns about operational practices and oversight at Goodwood Correctional Centre.
'As a department, we are committed to taking corrective steps where necessary and will continue to support and encourage our officials through wellness and support programmes to boost morale and safety,' he said.
'We reaffirm our commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and maintaining institutional accountability. I assure the public that this matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and any misconduct uncovered will be met with appropriate disciplinary action.'

Support for police investigation
The DCS has pledged full cooperation with the South African Police Service (Saps) as the investigation unfolds.
'Correctional Services remains committed to supporting the Saps investigation,' said Thobakgale.
'We commend the many dedicated officials who continue to serve with integrity, upholding the Constitution and the human rights of all individuals in our care.'
Police have not yet confirmed if any criminal charges will be laid against the officials involved.

Major delay: Police website experiences difficulties as thousands apply for programme
The SAPS' official website is experiencing major delays as 67 774 people applied for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BPLDP) in 24 hours. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the applications came in via the e-recruitment system from all over South Africa. 'We are aware that our website is experiencing a delayed response due to traffic volumes. Technology Management Services (TMS), inclusive of IT experts, are continuously monitoring the influx of applications. Applicants are therefore advised to be patient and continue to refresh the careers page,' she said. No arrests yet after body of 21-year-old found in Winterveldt No suspect has been arrested for the murder of 21-year-old Thulisile Mhlongo, whose body was discovered on June 26 at a dumping site in Winterveld. She had sustained multiple stab wounds and severe head injuries. According to SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Marinda Austin, 'The deceased was transported to Ga-Rankuwa Forensic Pathology Center and investigations are still ongoing.' Austin urged all young women to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety at all times saying, 'Be cautious of your surroundings, avoid walking alone in unsafe areas, and always inform someone about your whereabouts. Build a strong support network in your own family, and don't hesitate to report any threats or suspicious behaviour to the police.' Rekord spoke to Thulisile's father, Jacky Mhlogo, who said they were first informed of this tragic incident by a person close to their daughter, who had called to tell them that a body had been found at a dumping site in Winterveldt. On receiving this news they went to the dumping site to confirm her identity. 'Upon our arrival, we realised that the lifeless body was indeed of our daughter,' he said, continuing that as he came closer he noticed that Thulisile's body had been stabbed many times. Mhlogo said it will take time for them to come to terms with what happened to their daughter as they are still shocked and in disbelief. He said: 'We had big plans for Thuli and expected great things from her. I work as a driver, and we were planning to buy a truck to start a logistics business, where Thuli would be responsible for overseeing the operations. Now that her life was cut short, we feel completely robbed.' Thulisile's aunt, Nkateko Mhlongo, said the family is distraught over the loss of the young child, adding, 'It is sad, and I am still in disbelief about what happened to my niece'. She urged the police to arrest the person responsiblein order to find closure as the family, as all they want is for justice to prevail.
