M'sia Leads Efforts To Advance AI Governance Via ASEAN AI Safety Network

Barnama4 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will lead efforts to enhance regional cooperation through the establishment of the ASEAN AI Safety Network, a platform aimed to advance shared standards for artificial intelligence (AI) governance, ethics and cross-border innovation, in line with its ASEAN chairmanship this year.
For that purpose, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that trust must be embedded in the foundations of the digital ecosystem for meaningful and inclusive digital transformation to succeed.
He said instead of dictating fixed solutions, the Ministry of Digital is focused on creating enduring frameworks that empower innovation to grow responsibly.
'This includes a commitment to continuous engagement by listening, learning and collaborating with like-minded partners to ensure today's decisions lay the groundwork for a secure, inclusive and future-ready digital landscape.
'Malaysia is unwavering in its resolve to ensure that all digital development reflects the shared values of dignity, opportunity and progress for all,' he said in a statement today.
At the ASEAN-China Forum on Digital Cooperation in Shanghai yesterday, Gobind proposed the establishment of certification frameworks for AI systems to support responsible AI adoption, including the use of large language models (LLMs).
He said these certification frameworks are intended to ensure that AI technologies reflect national priorities, cultural contexts and public expectations, thereby instilling trust at every stage of deployment, adding that they will act as both safeguards and enablers, reinforcing confidence in the technologies that power Malaysia's digital economy.
During his speech, Gobind also reaffirmed that trust is the foundation of effective and inclusive digital transformation.
He said as Malaysia advances its position as a digital leader in the region, trust continues to guide national strategy, shape international partnerships and underpin the development of emerging technologies.

Malaysia's commodities remain competitive even with tariffs, says Johari

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (right) handing over a token of appreciation to Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (second from right), who officiated the Pasir Gudang division Umno annual general assembly here. JOHOR BARU: The newly revised 19% tariff imposed by the United States on Malaysia is not expected to impact the competitiveness of the nation's commodities in global markets, according to Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He noted that the tariff remains competitive compared to other Asean countries, including Indonesia, which also faces the same rate. "The 19% tariff imposed by the US on Malaysia is among the lowest in Asean countries, and even Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is subject to the same tariff rate," he explained. "In the context of palm oil, Indonesia is the largest producer and we are number two, but Indonesia is also subject to 19% like Malaysia, so there is no problem," he added. Johari made these remarks at a press conference after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno division annual general meeting. He was responding to queries about whether the 19% tariff would affect the country's commodities on the international stage. It was previously reported that Malaysia will now face a 19% tariff on exports to the US, reduced from the previous 25%, as per an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. The new tariff structure takes effect in seven days and applies to goods entering the US for consumption, with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit. Signed on July 31, 2025, the order amends Executive Order 14257 and imposes revised ad valorem duties on multiple trading partners, including all major Asean nations. Under the latest tariff list, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia each face a 19% rate.

RM2 billion flood mitigation project in Kuching under 13MP

KUCHING: The Kuching City Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will cost approximately RM2 billion, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. The project, divided into three main packages, includes constructing a canal, a bridge, and a barrage along Sungai Salak. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the tender process will begin this year, with construction expected to start in 2026. 'This RTB will channel excess water through Sungai Salak. Similar to Sungai Sarawak, a barrage will be installed to prevent seawater intrusion and allow better water control during high tides,' he explained after the opening of the He Medical Clinic. The Kuching RTB is part of a nationwide effort under the 13MP (2026–2030) to improve flood resilience and public infrastructure. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently announced a RM20 billion allocation for 103 RTB projects across Malaysia. Key locations include Sungai Langat and Sungai Buloh in Selangor, Sungai Golok in Kelantan, and Sungai Johor Basin in Johor. - Bernama

Strong response for TVET courses with 60,000 applicants, says Wong Kah Woh

TAIPING, Aug 2 — Approximately 60,000 applications have been received so far for enrolment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses at vocational colleges nationwide. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the strong response reflects the growing appeal of these courses as a pathway for skills development among young people. 'We currently have a capacity of 17,000 places across 86 vocational colleges nationwide. Various programmes are being developed from time to time to strengthen vocational colleges, enhance practical skills, and expand on the job training opportunities for TVET graduates,' he told reporters after officiating the Taiping Air Festival 2025 at Tekah Airport here today. Wong, who is also the Taiping member of parliament, said the employability rate of TVET graduates has reached 99 percent in recent years, based on available reports. 'This is a remarkable achievement. We want our vocational graduates to have the opportunity to further their studies or secure stable employment based on the skills they have acquired,' he said. — Bernama
