CRPF constable shoots himself dead in Chhattisgarhs Bijapur

Bijapur, Jul 30 (PTI) A constable of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Wednesday, officials said.
The incident took place early morning at Mingachal camp of the CRPF's 22nd battalion under Naimed police station limits, a police official here said.
Constable Pappu Yadav allegedly shot himself with his service rifle in the camp, the official said.
Yadav, a resident of Thakuri village in Bhojpur district of Bihar, had joined duty on Tuesday after returning from leave, he said.
An investigation was underway to ascertain the exact reason that prompted him to take the extreme step, the official said.
The mortal remains will be sent to his native place after postmortem, the police added.
In the recently concluded monsoon session of the Chhattisgarh assembly, the government informed that 177 security personnel committed suicide in the state between 2019 and June 15, 2025.
Of them, 26 personnel belonged to the CRPF, which is extensively deployed in south Chhattisgarh for anti-Naxal operations. PTI COR TKP GK

Japanese woman attacked in a subway in China, raising concern about xenophobia
Tokyo, Aug 1 (AP) A Japanese woman living in China was attacked by a man with a stone-like object in the eastern city of Suzhou and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Japanese media outlets. The assault late Thursday in Suzhou followed attacks earlier in the day in Tokyo against two Chinese men who were seriously injured. The violence has raised concern about xenophobic sentiment in both China and Japan that have been blamed for attacks in both countries. It was the third attack involving Japanese living in China since last year. In the two previous cases in China, Chinese authorities have insisted they were isolated incidents. The Japanese broadcaster NHK did not identify the woman injured in Suzhou by name but, citing the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai, said she was with her child inside a subway station when the attack took place. The child was not injured, and the mother had returned home after reportedly getting treated at a hospital, NHK reported. A phone call to the Suzhou Police went unanswered on Friday evening, and the local police were yet to release any official statement. But the Japanese news agency Kyodo said the suspect had been detained. In Tokyo earlier Thursday, two Chinese men were seriously injured in attacks, and four male assailants wielding unspecified weapons remained at large, according to a statement released by the Chinese Embassy in Japan. The identities of the assailants were unclear. In southern China last September, a 10-year-old Japanese student died after being stabbed by a Chinese man not far from the gate of the Shenzhen Japanese School in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. The man was sentenced to death. In June 2024, a Japanese woman and her child were injured in an attack by a Chinese man, also in Suzhou. A Chinese bus attendant who tried to protect them from the attack was killed. The man was sentenced to death. On Friday, the Japan Chamber of Commerce in China called for Chinese authorities to ensure Japanese citizens' safety and security in China. 'It is extremely regrettable that such an incident has happened again. Ensuring the safety of employees and their families is fundamental for doing business in China," the statement said. The Chinese Embassy urged the Japanese authorities to take action to catch the assailants in the Tokyo attack and to ensure the safety and legal rights of Chinese citizens in Japan 'in response to the recent surge in xenophobic sentiment in Japanese society." ‘UP saw dismantling of criminal network under Yogi in 8 years'
Lucknow: Highlighting the "immense changes" in law and order in the state since the BJP came to power in 2017, a govt spokesperson outlined the condition of Uttar Pradesh before 2017 and now. Following CM Yogi Adityanath's rise to power, the administration initiated a series of decisive actions to dismantle the criminal network that had taken root. Since the BJP came to power, there was a surge in police action against gangsters, seizure of illegal properties, and court trials were fast-tracked. There was a crackdown on unlawful religious conversions and the drug mafia. This, said the official, saw a sharp decline in criminal activity. "Under its zero-tolerance policy on crime, the state govt over the past eight years has seen over 240 dangerous criminals being killed in police encounters. During this time, the police carried out more than 15,000 encounters, arresting over 30,000 criminals. More than 9,000 criminals were injured in these operations," said the official. The govt cracked down on illegal properties of criminals, which broke the backbone of the mafia network and boosted public trust in the govt. As per govt data, illegal assets worth more than Rs 14,200 crore were seized or destroyed over the past eight years. Under 'Operation Conviction', about 1 lakh criminals have been convicted so far, which includes nearly 10,000 criminals sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes like rape, murder, and organised crime. Another 68 criminals have been sentenced to death. On average, courts are resolving 143 cases daily and punishing 187 criminals each day thanks to strong legal efforts, the official added. To crack down on the illegal drug trade, the govt has carried out large-scale operations, which include raids on fake liquor factories and inter-state mafia networks. Illegal liquor has been destroyed, and thousands of smugglers were arrested. An Anti-Narcotics Task Force was also set up, which has helped in the recovery of illegal drugs worth over Rs 2,737 crore and the registration of more than 30,000 cases. The govt went all out against illegal conversions, passing the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021, under which hundreds of people have been arrested, and several organised conversion rackets have been busted, claimed the official, citing the recent crackdown on Jalaluddin alias Changur, a key accused in an illegal religious conversion network. The state govt's policy, which the CM reiterates publicly at every occasion, is that a criminal will either be in jail in UP or out of the state.

Bangladesh: Student leader arrested on extortion charge
Dhaka, Aug 1 (PTI) Bangladesh police on Friday arrested a student leader on extortion charges, nearly a week after taking into custody five of his comrades, including two prominent figures of Students against Discrimination, in the same case. The Students against Discrimination (SAD) had led last year's mass protest campaign that eventually toppled prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime on August 5. 'Our detective branch arrested Jane Alam Apu from Dhaka's Wari area. Apu is the sixth accused to be arrested in the same case of extortion," joint commissioner of police Mohammad Nasirul Islam said. On July 26, police arrested five student leaders, including SAD figures Ibrahim Hossain Munna and Abdur Razzak Riyad, sparking a nationwide uproar. Their arrest prompted the SAD to expel them immediately and dissolve all its units excepting the central committee. Munna was SAD's Dhaka city convenor while Riyad was the convenor of the platform's Private Universities Committee. According to police, the group first went to former lawmaker of now disbanded Awami League Shammi Ahmed's residence at posh Gulshan area in the capital on July 17 and demanded Taka 50 lakh from her husband Abu Zafar since his 'fascist collaborator wife' was not at the house. On that day, they extorted Taka 10 lakh from him and on July 26 they went again to the house to collect the remaining Taka 40 lakh when police appeared at the scene and arrested them responding to a call from the family. The police action came as CCTV footage showing the extortionists receiving cash in the guest room of a residence went viral on social media. The SAD had spearheaded the violent street movement leading to Hasina's ouster. Three days after she fled to India, Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of the interim government on August 8. Two of the representatives of the SAD platform are Yunus' cabinet members. The SAD had later turned into a political outfit, the National Citizen Party (NCP), in February this year. Following the incident, former SAD spokesperson Umama Fatema, who recently resigned from the platform, in a video post on social media alleged that corruption had gripped the platform's leaders and that the 'July Uprising' 'has been made a 'money-making machine'." Fatema, who was one of the key coordinators of the student-led protest last year, said she was 'used like a tissue paper or a doormat" and claimed all key decisions came from Hare Road, where the government's advisers reside.
