Delhi to flush out 1976 model drainage system! PWD minister Parvesh Verma says ‘fresh masterplan in 15 days'
Working on the project since 2021, the department has divided the city into three basins: Najafgarh Basin, Barapullah Basin, and Trans-Yamuna Basin, and floated tenders for each of them.
PTI reported, citing officials, that Delhi's drainage system, designed in 1976, is capable of handling only up to 50 mm of rain in a single day.
'The draft reports from consultants will be submitted in the next 15 days for the Delhi Drainage Masterplan, after which it will be studied and the work will commence,' Verma said.
The consultants will present a fresh design for the drainage network with a view to making it capable enough to handle current and future stress, he added.
The Delhi Jal Board manages the city's sewer drains, while the Public Works Department (PWD) is in charge of stormwater drains along major roads. Larger drains, like the Najafgarh drain, fall under the responsibility of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
In 2018, IIT-Delhi prepared a drainage master plan, but the government termed it 'generic in nature' and said that it provided 'no clear-cut actionable points suggested.'
In November 2021, the government decided that for a more comprehensive drainage master plan, experienced consultants would be hired, officials said.

As per the weather department, heavy downpour is likely in South 24 Parganas, East and West Bardhaman districts till Tuesday morning. The IMD further added that light to moderate rain is likely to occur across districts of south Bengal, with heavy downpour in Purulia, Bankura, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts till Wednesday. In Madhya Pradesh, IMD officials have stated that the state has received 76 per cent higher rainfall than average. "Madhya Pradesh has received 456.6 mm rainfall against the average of 260 mm from June 1 to July 14. This is 76 per cent excess rainfall. Tikamgarh has received 828.3 mm against its average of 250.4 mm," IMD senior meteorologist VS Yadav told PTI.

The Met office has issued an 'orange' alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in three districts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday, reported the PTI. According to the weather department, heavy to very heavy showers are likely to occur at isolated locations in Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur on Monday, and in Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur on Tuesday. A 'yellow' warning for heavy rain has also been issued for three to seven out of the state's twelve districts, effective until Friday. As of Monday morning, 208 roads — 157 of them in the disaster-stricken Mandi district — have been closed to vehicular traffic due to the ongoing rainfall. Additionally, 745 water supply schemes and 139 electricity distribution transformers have been impacted, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Himachal Pradesh has already incurred losses exceeding Rs 770 crore during this year's monsoon season. Between the onset of the monsoon on 20 June and 13 July, a total of 98 people have lost their lives — 57 due to rain-related incidents and 41 in road accidents. Another 178 individuals have sustained injuries, while 34 are reported missing. The state has so far experienced 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 landslides. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall has been recorded in various parts of the state. Rajgarh in Sirmaur district received 72 mm of rainfall since Sunday evening, followed by Khadrala (42.4 mm), Pachhad (38 mm), Mandi (26.4 mm), Bhuntar (22 mm), Shilaroo (14.2 mm), Seobagh (12.2 mm), Shimla (11.5 mm), and Rohru (10 mm). Weather update: Light rain lashes Delhi-NCR; ‘Yellow Alert' for Kolkata
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a widespread weather alert predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several regions of the country between July 14 and 19. Parts of the city were lashed by rain on Sunday evening, bringing relief from the humid weather. The weather department has issued a red alert for more showers over the next few hours and throughout Monday. The weather department, in its latest forecast, said a cloud mass approaching from the southeast may cause light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over parts of Delhi-NCR. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 33 and 26 degrees Celsius. In Northwest India, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over East Rajasthan from July 14 to 15 and in West Rajasthan on July 14 and 15, said the IMD.
