Will Keeley Hawes' 'The Assassin' Get A Second Series After That Twisty Finale?
Well, for one thing, the showrunners are keen. The show was created by Harry and Jack Williams (who also created The Tourist and Liar) and in an interview with Esquire they weighed in on whether they'd be up for creating a second series.
'At this moment we don't specifically know what a season 2 would be,' they admitted, before adding: 'That said, Keeley and Freddie [Highmore] are so brilliant together, and such a delight to work with, that we'd absolutely be open to the possibility of more.'
The ending of The Assassin also lends itself to another series. Julie (Hawes) rescues her son Edward (Highmore) from the clutches of Gina Gerson's Marie - and the revelation that Julie isn't his real mother, leaves a big question unresolved... who is Edward's real mother? After Marie revealed they used a surrogate, the show ends with Edward, his fiancé and mother travelling to find out.
There's also the death of Alan Dale's Aaron to contend with - what part did his son Ezra have to play in it?
In their Esquire interview, the show-runner brothers revealed the ending scene (coda) deliberately dangles the possibility of more episodes.
'The coda forefronts one of the big questions left dangling at the end of the series – who is Edward's real mother?' they said. 'How did he end up living with Marie and her beloved arms-dealer husband Jean-Luc (seen in pictures looking disturbingly similar to Edward)? The coda is as much about letting the audience know that mother and son have found a way to be at some kind of peace with one another.'
