Jannik Sinner Wins The Rematch With Carlos Alcaraz To Claim His First Wimbledon Title

Vogue19 hours ago
Jannik Sinner has won his first Wimbledon championship, beating seemingly his only challenger on tennis's biggest stages, Carlos Alcaraz, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. It's the fourth major title for Sinner, the world's number-one ranked player—and likely a kind of exorcism of the defeat he suffered at the hands of Alcaraz in last month's epic French Open final.
'I had a very tough loss in Paris,' Sinner said on-court after his win, 'but at the end of the day it doesn't matter if you win or you lose; you just have to pay attention to the things you did wrong… and that's one of the reasons I'm holding this trophy… I'm very happy that I hold my nerves. It's an amazing feeling.'
While the match perhaps won't garner quite the level of superlatives their French final did, it was incredibly closely fought throughout, with points decided by millimeters, games often by a mere point, and sets by only a single break of serve. Both players appeared somewhat awed by the circumstance, and particularly in the early sets the hitting was at once powerful, precise, and nervy.
The rapt crowd watching the game's two best players included Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales with Prince George and Princess Charlotte; King Felipe VI of Spain; Jean Ashe, the widow of the legendary Arthur Ashe, who won Wimbledon 50 years ago; Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London; an array of Wimbledon champions from Bjorn Borg and Andre Agassi to Chris Evert and Stefan Edberg; Nicole Kidman, Keira Knightly, Matthew McConaughey, Paul Mescal, and Formula 1 driver George Russell, to name just a few.
Alcaraz struck first, rolling off four straight games to claim the first set; Sinner answered in the second (which was briefly disrupted in perhaps the most Wimbledon way ever: first by the sound of a champagne bottle popping, and then the cork flying onto the court) and continued to find his groove in the third set, particularly with his serve and his down-the-line backhand—perhaps his best weapon today. (Sinner took note of the cork-popping after the match: 'Only here at Wimbledon,' he said, 'but that's exactly why we love playing here.')
It was only in the fourth set that Alcaraz, who normally stalks the court with a kind of barely bottled intensity, appeared dispirited, even dejected—seemingly unable to come up with an answer for Sinner's consistency and strategy by relying on his usual nuclear firepower.

Heckingbottom reflects on pride after tribute match with Liverpool

Heckingbottom Proud as Preston Pay Tribute to Jota in Emotional Liverpool Clash Preston show dignity in powerful Anfield tribute Football has a way of bringing people together in moments of unimaginable loss. That was evident at Deepdale, where Paul Heckingbottom's Preston North End helped Liverpool honour the memory of Diogo Jota in the Reds' first pre-season fixture of the summer. Photo IMAGO Advertisement Jota, alongside his brother Andre Silva, tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain just ten days before the match. There had been discussions between the two clubs about cancelling the fixture, but both sides agreed that the game should go ahead, serving as a tribute rather than just a contest. Photo IMAGO What followed was more than a football match. A sombre yet stirring occasion, marked by a live rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and a wreath-laying ceremony, gave way to a 3-1 win for Liverpool. But the scoreline was never the point. Heckingbottom reflects on emotional occasion 'I'll never forget the morning we saw the news,' Heckingbottom said. 'The whole training ground stopped. When you see news like that, it puts everything in perspective. It is a reminder to everyone of how fragile life is.' Advertisement The Preston manager was acutely aware of the significance of the occasion. His players and staff, like their Liverpool counterparts, carried the weight of something greater than football. Photo IMAGO 'We knew the eyes of the world were on us, the eyes of football were on us,' he said. 'We wanted to represent ourselves and the wider football world in the correct way and pay our respects in the correct manner. I hope we were able to do that, and that that came across to everyone affected.' Match spirit honours a fallen rival The match, played with energy and commitment, became a statement of unity and respect. Heckingbottom was clear in his hope that the game offered Liverpool some solace. Advertisement 'I hope this has begun their healing process,' he said. 'I hope they feel better for having that game. It is a step closer to where they needed to get themselves to without a doubt, but I am proud of everyone, the way we showed our respect.' Football played with purpose 'And believe me, Diogo, being against him a few times, was that type of player as well,' Heckingbottom added. 'The game was played in the right way for him, for everyone involved.' It was football with heart, played in the true spirit of the game. In difficult times, Heckingbottom and Preston stood tall.

Tributes paid to footballer after sudden death as donations pour in

Tributes have been paid to a local footballer who died after entering a river near Swindon and thousands have been raised for his family. The body of a 23-year-old man named William was found on Sunday, July 13, after he entered the River Thames at Buscot Lock near Faringdon and got into difficulty the previous evening. While Thames Valley Police did not initially release his full name, they have now confirmed the man was Will Coker after tributes poured in on social media. Will played football for both Calne Town FC and Highworth Town FC during a burgeoning career. Both clubs have since paid tribute to Will. A GoFundMe has also been set up by Otis Lewis to pay for funeral expenses and support Will's family. It has raised over £4,500 in less than 24 hours. 'He played a big part in the reserve team under manager Liam Coombley. 'And again this season Will was back in with us applying himself in his usual hard-working manner with a huge smile on his face. 'It was only last Saturday he was playing with us all against his ex-reserve teammates… it's so sad that only seven days later we receive this tragic news.' Off the pitch, Paul described Will as polite and respectful. He added: 'Will was a quiet but super polite and respectful lad who loved football so much. 'He won't be forgotten by myself and as a club we will be holding a two-minute silence on Tuesday in our home friendly against Devizes Town. 'Myself and all associated with Highworth Town FC would like to send all our love and condolences to Will's family and friends.'
