Les Indes galantes review — hip-hop baroque turns Rameau into a rave
Rameau's 1735 opéra-ballet is called The Glamorous Indies but it is more like a baroque Race Across the World. We dash to Turkey, Persia and the Peru of the Incas (but about as real as the Peru of Paddington Bear). The final act is called 'The Savages': here the princess Zima decides to spurn a Frenchman and a Spaniard in favour of a suitor from among her people. Yet these Native Americans conclude contentedly that 'the conquerors bring peace to us''. Vive L'Europe! • The best classical concerts and opera: our reviews Bintou Dembélé's staging, which has its roots in a landmark show at the Opéra National de Paris in 2019, and now arrives at the Grange Festival in Hampshire on a European tour, dumps the holiday destinations and the elaborate effects for a street aesthetic. It feels like a political statement as much as an artistic one. A work performed for Louis XV at the Palais-Royal in Paris would have carefully put every performer in their place. Here, however, the stage is bare, and music, movement and voice all emerge from one body of performers. Tracksuited chorus members (the Namur Chamber Choir) and opera soloists join the hip-hop dancers of Structure Rualité. For their part the on-stage conductor Leonardo Garcia-Alarcón and players of Cappella Mediterranea are barefoot (all except the trumpeters, who perhaps missed the memo). • 'Opera lovers are going to explode' — the baroque shock coming to Hampshire The result is an impressive feat of co-ordination — and endurance, given that on first night the dancers were wearing their krumping kit in 30-degree heat. With a luxuriously large ensemble, ranging from the batsqueak of the sopranino recorder to the thwack of bass drums, Garcia-Alarcón summons Rameau's shimmering effects; period bassoons add an invigorating burr. The high point is a climactic chorus, Forêts paisibles, where an exhilarating display of physical prowess from the dancers doesn't come at the expense of vocal and instrumental glitter. Regrets? A few more than rien, unfortunately. Visual monotony dulls the musical colours — the rudimentary lighting effects leave the orchestra stranded in half-gloom, often the performers too. Sending the singers or dancers for sorties into the audience feels haphazard, rather than atmospheric. And a few attempts to nod to the intricacies of the original plot left me largely baffled (the four characterful singers — Laurène Paternò, Ana Quintans, Alasdair Kent and the especially impressive baritone Andreas Wolf — take multiple roles). This radical Rameau is undeniably powerful; a little more attention to detail would give it much more of a kick.★★★☆☆225min (including dinner interval)To Jul 2, Follow @timesculture to read the latest reviews

John Cena and Idris Elba team up for buddy movie 'Heads of State'
LONDON, July 1 (Reuters) - Actors John Cena and Idris Elba embark on a wild friendship journey in the comedy action adventure "Heads of State." Cena plays Hollywood action hero turned U.S. President Will Derringer, while Elba stars as the experienced and cranky British Prime Minister Sam Clarke, an army veteran. When a tense meeting between the two disparate leaders is followed by an attack that threatens to blow up the world order, they must come together to save the day. Cena and Elba, who also executive produced the movie, previously worked together on the 2021 superhero film "The Suicide Squad." "Honestly, our time on screen is effortless. He brings the best out of me and, in his words, I try to do my best to provide an environment where he can shine," Cena said at the movie's London premiere on Tuesday. "I love the friendship nature of this film," he added. The movie is directed by Russian filmmaker and musician Ilya Naishuller, who said Cena and Elba brought a realness to their roles. "They feed off each other as any good couple would, and they know how to argue together in such a way where this is the perfect combination of the American happy-go-lucky, optimistic president and the prime minister who is real about the job and how difficult it is," Naishuller said, adding he set out to make a summer blockbuster in the vein of the buddy action comedies of the 1980s and 90s. "The goal was, I want to do an hour and 45 of the highest quality entertainment I can do and just do a crowd-pleaser and make sure that the people sitting at home on July the 4th are going to be united and having a great time," he said. "Heads of State" also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the role of the pun-loving top MI6 agent Noel Bisset. "It was really different, because it was a comedy. Most of the action I've done has been in drama and thrillers," Chopra Jonas said. "I love my puns," she added. "I mean, listen, I love a good pun. You've got to be smart to be punny." "Heads of State" starts streaming on Prime Video on July 2.

Cheryl is 'is in talks for TV return as talent show mentor' five years after her last on-screen gig as she 'kickstarts career comeback' after ex Liam Payne's death
Cheryl could reportedly be set for a return to TV as she's being eyed up for a mentoring role on the next series of The Voice. The former Girls Aloud star's last appeared on TV as a dance captain on The Greatest Dancer back in 2019. But according to The Sun, Cheryl may be making her talent show return alongside her longtime pal as a guest mentor mentor on The Voice. The 14th series is reportedly set to see a return of the Battle Rounds and Cheryl is said to be in talks to mentor team. A source said: ' and Cheryl first worked together 16 years ago and have remained good friends ever since. 'She was the obvious choice to mentor his team when the Battle Rounds return four years after being axed. 'A lot has happened in Cheryl's personal life since she was last working on a talent show — BBC's The Greatest Dancer — so she's taking baby steps to put herself back out there. 'Teaming up with as a guest mentor seems the perfect way to kick-start her comeback.' The series will reportedly air next year and the source said there are hopes Cheryl will agree to sign on permanently. MailOnline has contacted representatives for Cheryl for comment. Cheryl's possible return to work comes after the tragic death of her former partner Liam Payne, who is the father of her son Bear. In the six years between Liam 's split from Cheryl and the singer's untimely death in Argentina, he became engaged to model Maya Henry and was reportedly talking marriage with his girlfriend of two years, Kate Cassidy, before he died. But despite moving on romantically from the Girls Aloud singer, the One Direction star made his feelings very clear, hailing her as 'the most important person' in his life, and praising her for always being there for him, despite their split. The former couple lived just minutes away from each other and before his death Liam revealed their relationship was stronger than ever, describing Cheryl as 'the best mum in the world' to co-parent with. Cheryl was later revealed to have the heartbreaking task of raising her son without his father, but a new dimension to that task emerged when it was revealed that Liam died without leaving a will. It meant that his £24million fortune will go to Bear, and Cheryl has been named administrator, meaning she will be entrusted with protecting the money for her son. It is unknown whether Liam, 31, had considered this outcome when thinking about his affairs, but regardless Cheryl, 41, has been entrusted with a huge responsibility on behalf of her ex-partner. Meanwhile, the lack of will means that Liam did not make any direct provision for his father Geoff and mother Karen, his two sisters and wider family, or other loved ones such as his partner Kate Cassidy. But perhaps it seems appropriate that the responsibility of dealing with his estate has gone to Cheryl, along with music industry lawyer Richard Mark Bray, given the depth of their bond. Liam couldn't help gushing about his former partner in interviews saying that he 'couldn't ask for more' in the mother of his child. While Cheryl has always been more guarded, the remarks she did make about Liam publicly were telling. In a 2018 interview, she claimed he was the only man who had never cheated on her, and she has never publicly dated anyone since they split up in 2018. Liam and Cheryl first met when Liam auditioned for The X Factor back in 2008 as a fresh-faced 14-year-old. Rumours of a romance emerged in 2016 when Liam shared a picture of a tattoo on his hand, thought to be a tribute to Cheryl's giant rose tattoo on her lower back and posterior. In March 2016, they became 'Instagram official' and months later, made their first public appearance at Cannes Film Festival and after more rumours, it was confirmed that Cheryl was pregnant with their son Bear. However, in July 2018, Cheryl confirmed she and Liam had sadly split in a tweet, writing: 'We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make. 'We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.' But despite ending things romantically, the pair continued to be bonded through their son, and stayed close over the years as they co-parented Bear, with Liam later declaring: 'Cheryl's always there for me.'
