Despite becoming a star early in his career with films like Hero (1983) and Teri Meherbaniyan (1985), Jackie continued to live in the same chawl where he grew up. At a time when he had already become a recognizable face in the film industry, his neighbors in the chawl decided to honor his success in a rather unconventional way — by gifting him a personal toilet.
A Unique Gift After Stardom
During an interview with Filmfare, Jackie recounted how, after achieving success in cinema, he was given access to a private washroom in the chawl. The locality had only three common washrooms shared by around 30 residents. As filmmakers and industry colleagues started visiting him at home, they often had to wait in line to use the shared facilities. This didn't sit well with the other residents, who felt it wasn't right for a public figure like Jackie, or his guests, to stand in queue.
Understanding the growing inconvenience, the residents offered Jackie exclusive use of one washroom. Although he initially declined, saying he and his friends were fine using the common toilets, they insisted and secured it with a lock for his personal use. Jackie mentioned that at the time, even having a cupboard in the house was a big deal, highlighting how small things carried great value in those days.
