Tailor denies molesting disabled teen; technician charged

KUALA LUMPUR: A tailor pleaded not guilty in the Ampang Sessions Court today to a charge of outraging the modesty of a teenage girl with a disability last month.
Muhammad Arif Zulfakar Abdul Razak, 25, is accused of committing the offence against the 17-year-old girl in the restroom of a vocational training centre in Taman Keramat, here, around 6.30 pm in early May.
He was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, or a fine, or caning, or any combination of the two, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Norhidayah Abdullah Sani requested bail of RM6,000 with additional conditions that the accused be prohibited from approaching the victim or tampering with prosecution witnesses.
The accused's lawyer, Lingswaran Singh, applied for minimal bail, citing his client's employment as a tailor and responsibility as the family's sole breadwinner.
Judge Nurulizwan Ahmad Zubir allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM4,000 with the additional conditions requested by the prosecution and fixed July 21 for case mention.
In the same court, technician Ahmad Nizar Ahmad Aminudin, 51, pleaded not guilty to threatening a 46-year-old man with a knife at a restaurant in front of a flat in Taman Dato Ahmad Razali on May 28.
He was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
DPP Norhidayah proposed a bail of RM5,000 with one surety. However, the accused's lawyer, Vinobha Doss from the National Legal Aid Foundation, requested a lower bail on the grounds that his client is the sole breadwinner of his family.
The court granted bail at RM3,000 with one surety and fixed July 10 for case mention.

Foreign student to be charged today over slashed ex-girlfriend at university

SUBANG JAYA: The foreign student accused of slashing his ex-girlfriend in the neck with a knife at a private university here will be charged today. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said the suspect would be taken to the Shah Alam Sessions Court to face charges under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons or means. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine or both. "We have been instructed by the deputy public prosecutor to produce the suspect in court today," he said when contacted. In the incident on July 14, the suspect allegedly attacked his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend with a knife, causing injuries to the left side of her neck. It was reported that police recorded statements from 12 individuals as part of the investigation into the stabbing of the female student at a private higher learning institution recently. Dissatisfaction over his ex-girlfriend's alleged lies that he had stopped her from leaving the house is believed to be the motive behind the attack. The victim was treated in the intensive care unit at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Ipoh senior citizen loses RM158,000 in phone scam

IPOH: A 73-year-old man has lost RM158,000 in a phone scam involving individuals impersonating insurance agent and policemen. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the victim lodged a police report yesterday after realising he had been duped by the scammers. Abang Zainal Abidin said the victim had made 12 separate transactions into 12 different bank accounts, purportedly as part of a police investigation. "The victim first received a call from someone claiming to represent an insurance company, alleging that he had outstanding payments. "The call was then transferred to another individual who claimed to be a policeman from the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters. "The victim was told he was under investigation for money laundering involving over RM2 million and that an arrest warrant had been issued against him," he said in a statement yesterday. He added that, in a state of panic, the victim was allegedly threatened and instructed to transfer funds, purportedly for bail and to facilitate an internal investigation. "This is a typical modus operandi used by scam syndicates, instilling fear and urgency in the victim before coercing them into transferring money under the pretence of avoiding legal action," he said. Following the police report, he said an investigation has been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. The offence carries a maximum penalty of ten years' jail, whipping, and a fine if convicted. He added that efforts are ongoing to track down the suspects and the owners of the bank accounts used in the scam. He also urged the public to be vigilant when receiving unsolicited calls, especially those claiming to be from enforcement agencies or financial institutions. "We want to remind the public that neither the police nor any financial institution will ever request banking details or ask for payments over the phone under any circumstances," he said.
