Drug dealer's driving in Paisley led police to £6,190 cocaine discovery
A drug dealer was snared when cops followed a black BMW from Paisley to Hillington which was being driven using 'counter surveillance techniques'.
Charles Caldwell was snared by police driving out of a Paisley street in his motor on January 18 last year. Officers, in their unmarked car, followed the 32-year-old as he drove to Hillington, changing lanes, slowing his speed and speeding off.
When cops stopped Caldwell, his passenger got out of the car that caused cops to detect a strong stench of cannabis which led them to conduct a search of Caldwell and his vehicle.
Procurator fiscal depute Jason Stark told Paisley Sheriff Court cops found cocaine within Caldwell's car and stashed in his underwear.
He explained: 'On January 18 last year, officers on plain-clothes patrol in an unmarked vehicle observed a black BMW exiting Dee Crescent in Paisley. Officers followed the vehicle to outside The Wheel Specialist in Hillington.
'Throughout the journey, police observed the vehicle to change lanes on a number of occasions, slow speed and then accelerate sporadically which police believed was counter surveillance techniques.
'Police approached the vehicle and observed the accused as the driver and another male as the front seat passenger.
'The passenger exited the vehicle and police detected a strong smell of cannabis emanating from within. Both males were informed they were being detained and cautioned at common law and a search of the accused was carried out.'
The court heard officers discovered a knotted white bag containing a 'white rock substance' from Caldwell's jacket pocket, two mobile phones from his trousers pocket and a white knotted bag containing white powder within his underwear.
Cops then carried out a search of the car and found two white bags containing numerous white knotted bags which had white powder.
Mr Stark added: 'Around 3.15pm on the same date, officers rested and weighed the recovered items within Paisley police office.
'The item recovered from the accused's jacket pocket weighed 57.5g and was separated into five bags which contained two knotted bags therein, one containing white powder, believed to be a mixing agent and white rock which tested positive for cocaine weighing 18.5g, and 37g of unknown white powder. The item recovered from the accused's underwear totalled 124.6g and tested positive for cocaine.
'A white bag recovered within the car weighed 73.3g and was separated into 42 knotted wraps which weighed 1.7g approximately, which tested positive for cocaine.
'And a second white bag recovered from the car, weighed 32.4g and was separated into 35 knotted wraps which tested positive for cocaine.'
The court heard a forensic drug expert estimated that, should the Class A drug be sub-divided into the 'lowest recovered recognised street deal of 1g', it has the potential to generate approximately £6,190.
Mr Stark added: 'The officers confirmed that it is their opinion that the cocaine in this case is excessive for personal use with the majority of which being sub-divided into recognised street deals and would be for sale or supply.'
Caldwell's defence agent asked for background reports to be prepared and reserved mitigation. Caldwell admitted to being concerned in the supply of cocaine, a Class A drug on January 18 last year.
Sheriff Andrew Berry adjourned sentence for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment.
Caldwell, of Castlegreen Street, Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, had bail continued and will be sentenced next month.

I was on FaceTime call with my best friend when she was killed in a horror car crash – her screams will haunt me forever
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A YOUNG woman who was on FaceTime with her best pal when she was killed in a car crash says she'll be haunted by the memory forever. Ebony Neville heard tragic work colleague Stephanie Nye-Diroyan suddenly scream as the video call cut out. 9 Ivan Zailac and Stephanie Nye-Diroyan (right) just seconds before the fatal crash Credit: Ebony Neville 9 Stephanie, 21, was killed in the horror collision Credit: Central News 9 Ebony Neville (left) and Stephanie were best pals, having met at work months before Credit: Ebony Neville The 21-year-old then began frantically trying to call her friend back before getting into her own car and driving along the same route, eventually coming across the crash site. Stephanie, 21, was a passenger in a BMW being driven by another work colleague, Ivan Zaliac, 24, when they ploughed into a lorry at nearly 100mph on Mollison Avenue, in Enfield North London. Ebony told The Sun: "Seconds before the phone cut out you could hear the engine revving and Stephanie's scream - then it froze on her face." She added: 'I tried to ring her back - I don't know what I was thinking had happened. Zaliac - who walked free from court last month after being deemed unfit to stand trial - had been giving Stephanie a lift on October 23 2022 after they finished work at nearby second hand car dealership Big Motoring World. Ebony was ill that day and Stephanie had agreed to stop off to see her on her way home when she died. The crash happened at 7.54pm. 'It was literally a quick call,' explained Ebony. 'She worked that day - it was a Sunday - and I wasn't in. 'It was a quick catch up, really. A catch up with a friend, that's all. She was such a good friend, she'd been non-stop checking in throughout the day - but couldn't ring me until she finished work. 'We were on the phone and then it froze on Stephanie's face, and the call cut out.' I also rang Ivan's phone, both were disconnected and were being put through to voicemail.' Ebony said she waited 20 minutes and was 'still ringing during this time… just to try and find out what had happened'. She rang the police and found out there'd been a 'bad crash' in Brimsdown so 'drove around'. 'It wasn't too far from my house, it was about an 11-minute drive,' Ebony said. 'The road was blocked off. I hadn't been told who was involved in the crash or what had happened. 'I wasn't allowed to know any information.' She was then directed to The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel in the East End, where Stephanie had been taken. Holding back tears, Ebony said: 'I did everything I could that day and I wouldn't change anything. I went to the hospital… I wasn't allowed to know anything without Stephanie's mother knowing first.' 9 Zailac was deemed unfit to stand trial earlier this month Credit: Central News 9 Mollison Avenue in Brimsdown where the crash took place Credit: Google Maps 9 Stephanie and her mum Nicholle Diroyan (left) Credit: Ebony Neville A screen shot she captured of Stephanie during the call, a few minutes before the crash, was shown in court. Ebony took to the stand to give evidence. She said: 'I was quite upset and ran out of the room immediately afterwards, and put myself together before returning.' Zailac suffers from amnesia and doesn't remember the details of what happened after suffering a brain injury in the collision and subsequent psychiatric issues. He had been ruled unfit to stand trial so the jury had to formally decide whether he did the act alleged, namely causing Stephanie's death by dangerous driving. The jury then found he did carry out the act. Judge Sarah Munro, KC, said Zailac will be supervised by a nominated social worker and the Hillingdon mental health team for two years. 'This is the only way your mental health can be restored in order for a decision to be made as to whether there are further legal consequences for you to face,' the judge said. Prosecutor Frederick Hookway told the court that the Crown intends to put Zailac on trial if he recovers. 'The objective of this order is for the improvement of the defendant's mental health not only for his own sake but for the future of these proceedings,' he said. 'The crown do intend to reinstitute these proceedings when and if appropriate.' Stephanie's mum Nicholle Diroyan sobbed as she read her victim impact statement at the Old Bailey on July 7. She said: 'The pain of losing her is immeasurable and every day without her feels incomplete.' Ebony, who now lives in Manchester, has launched a petition to try and ensure Stephanie's family get justice. 'There's been three years of constant delays and adjournments - and now we're told it'll be 2027 before we know if Ivan can even stand trial. 'It's the waiting. We're left in the dark.'. 'I feel so sorry for Stephanie's mum Nicholle - who's always at the court but then left frustrated each time.' Ebony added: 'We were told the jury returned a verdict in a record time. Quickest for death by dangerous driving for 27 years. 'Despite this clear outcome, family and friends are waiting for justice.' Referring to the two-year order, she said: 'It's a deterrent of the law, rather than an enforcement.' She added: 'That grievance, when everything is brought back up. I'm quite shaky on this call, it's traumatic to relive the tragic crash and death of Stephanie.' Ebony went on to say: 'Stephanie was the most lovely, genuine, outgoing person. She was there for her friends, she was there for her family. 'If anyone needed her, she'd message, she'd ring, she'd be there for you. To see her face in the newspaper in such a tragic way, and yet we're still yet to receive any justice, is so heartbreaking.' Stephanie had hired Ebony several months before, and was her manager before being promoted to the finance department shortly prior to her death. 'We became friends so quickly,' she said. 'The week before she died we were in Manchester and Nottingham, just enjoying ourselves. 'I was always going round to hers and picking her up or going for lunch break. 'Sometimes we'd get a takeaway into work and would be sitting there with 10 different Greggs items. She was amazing.' Ebony added: 'We believe she's looking down on us so proud of us all.' Drunken Dem mayor seen intoxicated in jaw-dropping bodycam makes shock move amid calls for resignation
Months after a shocking bodycam video showed her stumbling, slurring, and confessing to drinking vodka before driving her toddler home from daycare, New Jersey Democratic Mayor Gina LaPlaca is back in office, claiming she's sober. Despite being charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree child endangerment, LaPlaca, made a stunning return to the Lumberton Township Committee declaring, 'Today marks my 59th day of sobriety,' in a message shared publicly at the May 15 meeting. 'I was discharged after successfully completing 54 days of inpatient treatment. I am now undergoing intensive outpatient treatment three hours a day, five days a week,' the 46-year-old said. Her comeback has left many in the South Jersey town reeling, especially after viral footage captured the mayor's March 17 arrest. In a chaotic scene outside her $640,000 home officers confronted her after a 911 caller reported her BMW 5-Series swerving across the road nearly striking a utility pole all while her two-year-old son was in the back seat. LaPlaca, visibly intoxicated, staggered into the street and admitted to officers she'd been drinking 'a little bit of vodka'. She failed multiple sobriety tests and police found open containers of alcohol in her vehicle. 'I'm sorry,' LaPlaca said tearfully as she was handcuffed. An officer gently responded, 'That's okay.' Months after a shocking bodycam video showed her stumbling, slurring, and confessing to drinking vodka before driving her toddler home from daycare, Democratic Mayor Gina LaPlaca is back in office, claiming she's sober Despite being charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree child endangerment, LaPlaca has made a stunning return to the Lumberton Township to resume her role as mayor After being censured by her own committee and being urged to resign by both New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and her fellow committee members, LaPlaca has refused to step down and instead made a defiant return, leaning on her recovery journey as justification for remaining in office. On Saturday, she doubled down in a social media post praising Interior Secretary turned-New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland for her own public sobriety. 'Kudos to Deb Haaland not only for her 35 years of sobriety, but also for speaking openly about her struggles with alcohol addiction,' LaPlaca wrote on Facebook. 'Shame on anyone who thinks a person in recovery can't continue to serve their community.' But many in Lumberton say the issue isn't recovery but accountability. At township meetings following the arrest, residents lined up to demand LaPlaca's resignation, citing concerns over her judgment. 'She is compromising the position of our law enforcement,' one resident said. 'She needs to resign.' Others called her 'manipulative,' 'narcissistic,' and accused her of bringing 'another black eye to our town.' On Saturday, she doubled down in a social media post praising Interior Secretary turned-New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland for her own public sobriety It was March when LaPlaca was seen stumbling out of her vehicle after swerving on the road Police officers quickly placed LaPlaca in cuffs after she failed field sobriety tests The mom-of-one was placed under arrest and into the back of a police cruiser Gina LaPlaca, 46, the Democrat Mayor of Lumberton, is seen in some of her Facebook photos. LaPLaca was seen stumbling and slurring her words after she was approached by cops Her two-year-old son was sitting in the back seat of her car when police caught her at home Even Committeeman Terrance Benson joined the chorus: 'My personal opinion is for the mayor to step down and to heal herself.' Town officials say their hands are tied. In New Jersey, removing an elected official from office is legally difficult unless they are convicted of a disqualifying crime or recalled by voters. A recall effort is now underway, with organizers needing signatures from at least 25% of registered voters to force a special election. Earlier this year, LaPlaca's husband, former Westampton fire chief Jason Carty, urged the public to back off, arguing that her personal struggles shouldn't define her legacy. 'It's not like she's the mayor of some big city,' Carty said in April. 'Lumberton has only 13,000 people. All I want is for my wife to get better and for everyone to leave her alone.' But the backlash has not calmed down especially after it emerged that LaPlaca had previously been arrested in 2023 for allegedly assaulting Carty, a charge that was later dismissed and expunged. She had also abruptly resigned from her job as Neptune Township's business administrator just a week before the DUI incident. In early March, LaPlaca was slammed after she had an outburst at a town meeting and cursed at one of the attendants. Earlier this year, LaPlaca's husband, former Westampton fire chief Jason Carty, urged the public to back off, arguing that her personal struggles shouldn't define her legacy LaPlaca is of the opinion she can get sober and still be mayor of the town of Lumberton The backlash has not calmed down especially after it emerged that LaPlaca had previously been arrested in 2023 for allegedly assaulting Carty, left, a charge that was later dismissed Footage of the incident shows the slurring mayor being escorted out of the meeting as she called a woman a 'f***ing s***k b****.' 'Why do we condone this behavior and keep electing her?' one Lumberton resident wrote. 'Gina is a narcissist, manipulative and corrupt individual who thrives on power just like her husband.'
